Now the gritters have appeared the mighty Fazer thou is off the road and getting ready for another bout of winter maintenance and additions. So far my wish list for additions is a full brakes overhaul and probably a new Oxford Battery Oximiser and replacement nuts and bolts here and there.
- Braided lines
- Brembo Callipers, Disks and Master Cylinders for front and back
- Toying with an Ivan's upgrade from slip-on to full monty
- Black Powder Coating of Rear Pegs, Rear Sets etc...and possible swing arm...can't be arsed with the autosol treatment any longer.
- Full Service to include new spark plugs, oil, filters and fluids, carbs balanced and exup serviced
- New belly pan
- General deep clean then ACF 50
What do you guys have planned for those bikes that are off the road for this winter.
-
service
new tyres
paint engine
new paint ...maybe ;)
remove and polish downpipes
that should keep me busy :)

I've acf50'd it and that's it really apart from a wash every weekend

I ride in all weather so spray down with scott oiler 365 and keep on top of the crud

Complete service end to end-starting with the brakes-seals,fluid,lines & working back to the rear tyre. Shes 10 years old so the brake lines (orig) well past their best. Nice set of "Fehling"(German) crash bars arrived yesterday. Once all jobs done it will be ACF 50 time and then connect to Optimate for the cold months.
-
erm....I was just going to keep riding mine.... :\
Wash it when required. Keep the downpipes as clean as possible (not that it matters really, as I have a full set WITH exup sat in the shed! woop! woop!
-
All ACF'd up and polished. Only plans for winter apart from riding and petrol are keep the scottoiler topped up. Probably wash the crud off in spring :rollin .
Oh and service and new tyres next week - because they are due, nothing to do with winter.
-
Ride her.

Just priced all this up this morning.....cant afford to do it all this year so only getting minor brakes upgrade....Brembo master cylinder, Hel braided lines and new pads......disks and callipers will need to wait until next year or I win the lottery as they are well foccin expensive....still going ahead with the cosmetic changes though.......I am also thinking of doing the swing arm in black too but not 100% on how that would look
-
Just a heads-up for those of you planning on replacing your brake lines - all these lines are made on the same equipment on the same site using the same lines and fittings, so you pays your money ...............

Mine's been off the road for 4 weeks now, and they're on the forth attempt to powdercoat the wheels - I should have put up with the flaking paint! When it comes back, the only thing it'll get over the winter is ridden, with an occasional clean to stop the salt building up.

The first 2 attempts didn't bond, for some reason (probably poor prep!) the last worked OK on the front wheel, but there were some issues round the rim on the back - uneven coverage, somehow. Hopefully the end result will be a good match to DPBMC.
-
mmmmm....... have the wheels been blasted back to bare metal or are they trying to powder coat over the top of the original finish ?
-
Removed the exhaust to take the rust off the clamps and paint them with exhaust paint to prevent the rust setting in (any suggestions btw? I've got a can of halfords spray on exhaust paint but if anyone knows of something better?).
Found the support bracket (just behind the Exup) had corroded off and will need welding back on. So it'll be a few weeks off the road...

I've just got mine cleaned and wrapped up for the winter under several dust sheets and a waterproof cover in the garage. I've also got it elevated on front & rear paddock stands because the floor does get slightly damp. The battery has been removed and i've got that connected to a trickle charger and I'll probably give it a little boost every few weeks just to keep it topped up.
I've got so much lined up for it I won't bore you with the details, I'll just add pics as and when I do them ;)
-
Clean it, WD40 it (all I got), SORN it, fit seat when sister brings it down from Tony Archer at Christmas.
Would love to have frame powder coated & paint engine while it's out but mean while, back in the real world I've got an FZ750 with a poorly engine & a house I'm totally ashamed of so it's not gonna happen. :rolleyes
-
might take swing arm off for a check/lube.....if anyone can provide a link to a 'how to' guide that would be great.....not done it before :o

As it happens I do mate, the problem being I live on a farm so havta ride through a paddock every morning which is constantly flooded and liberally spread with horse shit( we rent the farm house and have no control over the horsey bit) so wash my bike a lot so once the acf50 is used up I'm going back to fs365 after every wash, it works out cheaper.

I know there is a controversy as what's best. I have no clue, but guess if it's safe for planes it's safe for my bike. After all I'm often trying to fly :)
It dose seam to wash off as pointed out in previous post, I tend to leave it till salt on the roads has gone and then clean the bike and prep it for spring. Mind you I only do 14000 miles a year so not a huge amount compared to despatch riders.

Washing sounds a bit extreme. Pointed a hosepipe at mine this weekend and looking good now all the crud is gone (well not counting what I picked up this morning). Will do it again and top up the ACF before I go on my Christmas hols.

Having never used it before I've just invested in some ACF50 and am kind of assuming that it forms a coating so you can just hose off the dirt with fresh clean water. I imagine that if you wash the bike normally i.e. with shampoo and a sponge you will end up taking the ACF50 off.

Whenever I bought a kilo of e-glass silencer packing for the crf450 I got a small test sprayer of 365. Never used it before but I sprayed the bike with it after washing last weekend, it took most of the bottle -I have about 5 more to go.
Turned the scotoiler up a smidge.

Using ACF50 is easy, I spray some into the cap then use a brush to brush it everywhere, as spraying it via the can gets it everywhere bar where you want it, once on dirt tends to stick to it, just hose the salt of the brakes and the bike every ride, touch up bits that look clean, leave the dirty bits, as that is dirt binding to the ACF50, then in the spring clean the bike using gunk, a sponge and shampoo will have some effect, but it's slow and not as good as using the gunk or similar, I use some engine degreaser from Eurocar parts, in a 5 litre tin, but it works the same as gunk!

I have planned fit the Ivan's kit and sort out the carburation issue, I haven't told the wife how much the kit cost yet!! Also paint the clutch and cam covers, order a set of stick coils and do a service including check the valve clearences, but most importantly,
Find the keys which my wife and her friends lost somewhere in the house, and they can't remember where they put them.

Well I plan on sorting the suspension on my gen1, already bought the front bushes, but despite the bike having done 17k miles, it will need the rear shock replaced, i don't even want to ride it before its sorted, I also need to fit heated grips, braided hoses, and a power socket for my garmin sat nav, my brother has the same gen 1, and thinks this suspension upgraditus is a waste of money and effort, boy is he going to be surprised at the difference :rollin
I need to replace the alternator on my ural as well, nothing up with it, only it's nick named the hand grenade, because it seizes and explodes killing the engine :'(
-
I've already given mine the ACF50 treatment and a service so I'll be fitting the 'Venhill' front and rear brakelines the Mrs bought me for my birthday a few days ago ;)
-
A chap on the ZZR14 forum did a comparison test of ACF50 in his back garden over a few months with some bare metal shelf supports he had lying around. It's certainly worth using something.

Winter maintenance? Out in the cold garage? Have a word with yourselves!
