"Twice as much torque as a Triumph Street triple"
"..at 2500 rpm...as much torque as 990 Super duke R...could muster at peak..."
"...a sophisticated psychopath, able to perform acts of astonishing ferocity..."
"...a true 1:1 ratio between twistgrip and throttle butterflies...was just impossible..."
"Untamed, this engine is literally too powerful for it's own good."
"In sport mode with digital assistance off, it will wheelie - big, angry, fast wheelies - off throttle alone in third gear..."
(all quotes from Bike Magazine)
This bike is so ugly, I want one now! Where do I sign?!!....... :rollin

177bhp, 180mph.......180?! On an upright, high-barred, adventure lookalike? How the hell did they find that out?! Guy must have had arms like Schwarzenegger just to hang on!
Yes, you can have my chequebook, I'll sign em all - just let me enjoy this thing for a year - hell, a summer - before you cart me off to jail/nuthouse/morgue! :evil :nana :2guns :lol :rollin :b :evil :nana :2guns :lol :rollin :b :evil :nana :2guns :lol :rollin :b :evil :nana :2guns :lol :rollin :b

For sale, 2 children, house trained, come complete with their mother. :D;D

If it is the one i saw, then it is alot of steel,a bit like a school metalwork project, crap finish,,not like the alloy we are used to.|Did look a bit cheap.

Yamaha FZ1 wet weight - 220kg
KTM 1290 SD R wet weight - 202kg
FZ1 power output - 150bhp
KTM 1290 power output - 177bhp
Who cares if it's got a steel frame?! My gen1 thou has a steel frame and it's still a great bike.
Quality of the KTM? I don't know, but I'm not likely to last very long if I had one anyway! :lol
-
I need one of those
-
It wheelies off the throttle in third!! Yes third!!! Gotta get one!
-
I'd be at the front of the queue if I had £14k spare, that's gorgeous! :eek
-
not sure I could live with one to be honest , but by god I'd loveto have a go !
-
Sounds like it's more a question of "surviving" rather than "living with". Take a good, long look at your license if you buy one, cos you ain't gonna have that for much longer :lol
-
I've been invited for a test ride when they arrive in December - if I survive the experience I'll do a write up. My prediction tho is that I'll stick with the 990 I have already. Probably...

Steeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeve!!!!, look forward to the right up buddy,
Out of interest...from experience.....how reliable are ktm road bikes???,based on the 990 would you keep one long term, say 10 years with just normal wear & tear???
& what sort of stuff can you annihilate with the 990 please?
Cheers

KTM 1290 Super Duke R - The Beast Escape (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMboFftXW-Q#ws)
I like it!!

First thing, I'll get out my old platform boots that I wore when a Rubettes fan. Then go online and check out Wonga.com. Damn my stumpy legs and empty bank account.
-
I have a cunning plan..... :lol
Mine paid off in 1 1/2 years (maybe sooner), then there should be some nice 2nd hand ones about, perfect for PCP! Which means I can still follow thro with my plans for next year - s'all good dawg! :)

I've had mine from new since '07 - the only fault has been a failed water pump. Generally reliability is pretty good with, if the Superduke.net forum is anything to go by, few problems. But they are idiosyncratic buggers - changing the oil requires removing two drain plugs, two filters and cleaning two screens. Changing the coolant requires lifting the front of the bike 50cms - harder to do than you might imagine. Battery access appears to have been conceived by someone convinced you never needed to get to it...
It might say a lot pointing out that when I leave the country to go to France, Holland or Spain I'll always take the Fazer, not the SD.
As for annihilating - ALL the performance is under 80 odd mph; to 60 or 70 and between 20 and 70 I'd say almost nothing can touch it, but in general the Fazer is quicker. And more comfortable - the SD is a bike you perch very much 'on top' of, with very little wind protection, none actually. It feels like you're sitting on a billiard ball, it turns so quickly but leaves you just as exposed to the elements.
No electric rider aids, nothing to make you feels safe - just a sophisticated but violent V Twin strapped in to a bicycle frame with two thumping great Brembo brakes on huge disks mounted on forks that are near vertical.
Fantastic.

RUN!
RUN LIKE THE WIND!!
:rollin
Long term Foccers will remember I loved my SuperDuke, but it was a piece of shite.
Owned it for two and a bit years, had four oil pressure switches, a new battery, a COMPLETE wiring harness including reggy/rec as it corroded off, three fork seals, a fuel pump and a letter from KTM demanding that I wash and dry the brakes after every wet ride.
I live in Glasgow ffs!!
Saying that, the new one looks AMAZING!!
Actually thought about it but then decided no.
Saying that, New Zealand don't put salt on the roads, so mibbes when I move over there...
:D
-
Meh ,its slow and underpowered :evil
-
I may wait for the 1490 superduke!
-
Long term Foccers will remember I loved my SuperDuke
Spring Meet attendees a dew years ago will concur, "So did I!"
I would have bought it only Andy was the previous owner....
This new one has me salivating :'( Ah wannnnt waaannn!

its the most exciting bike IMO for many many years ....BUT
1. its a very big twin, so to make it rideable its incredibly loaded with electronics . Initial reports say its too castrated by them. :'(
2. dont start thinking double the torque of a speedy at low revs means much , as its what happens at over 3000 rpm which counts. That is marketing speak, and its been proven to be a false claim. It will have more torque simply because of its extra capacity.Side by side tests will be needed to see just how all this power can be put down OTR. Dont forget blades have been best selling sportbikes for years simply cos they can !..speedys are great bikes OTR for same reason. But 50 bhp more is staggering !
3. you probably will have to be a very skilled rider to actually use that performance without killing yerself ! :eek
4. It will break down ! :lol
5. I still love it ! :)

BUT...
1. Most of the electronic gizmos can be switched off.
2. Big V-twins are usually very torquey - but coupled with this bikes light weight, it's going to seem pretty amazing anyway.
3. I'll die with a big grin on my face! :lol
4. Probably not before 3. above! :lol :lol
5. Me too! :)

Sat on it at show yesterday and its a great riding position. It is small though , so I looked a bit like donkey kong on it ! :lol
would love a ride all the same .I do love big twins !
shame I couldnt see a full on orange one like the vid, the show bikes were a lot blacker.

When you say small, is that just the Seat/Tank/Bars small or the Seat/Ground small? Just asking as I'm vertically challenged?

I sat on it at the show too. It was comfortable and you feel as though you are right over the front wheel. Still pretty much like any other naked in terms of seating position.
I'll get a test ride as soon as the weather improves. At £14000 it could be the best bike ever, that is still a lot of money to find.
-
I'll be getting one as soon as they get to about £3000. A long wait methinks?
Mickey
-
Its physically small, as compared to an adventure bike. I cant see too many issues with seat height unlike say an 1190 adventure. It will feel fast as you are perched rightover the front wheel, but it is a very nice riding position, very like my 1050 speedy2.
really love it , but its a very narrow market surely ...??? how many folk have 14K literally for a bonkers toy?...or does this merely increase its desirability and folk lining up for a pcp !
-
I would buy one now but the wife is keeping a firm grip on my baubles.
-
I could buy 1/10 of one now.......hmmmmm, which tenth to have? :rolleyes
-

I could buy another 1/10 as well, hey, if we all club together we could buy one and then, collectively, tell Exup he's not allowed to have a go on it? :lol
-
I'd be up for that JUST so we could tell Exup he can't have a go :lol
