had a couple of zips go this year :\ ...jacket and trousers, not expensive kit but not cheap either, too good to throw away so was thinking of taking to local tailor to see if two new zips could be fitted.....anyone one had this done before and most important........how much ;)
-
I'd be interested to hear what you find out about having it done professionally.
But I've also been thinking about having a go myself.
If you search ebay for "YKK ZIP" you'll see the sort of things you can buy.
They come already attached to a bit of fabric, looks like just a matter of unpicking existing one and sewing new one in place.
My next step is to figure out of a regular sewing machine is man enough to deal with thick leather? My projects do lead me down some strange paths...
Let us know what you find out!

Hand stitch with a heavy needle and lots of plasters :)

got a zip in a leather jacket about 5 years ago, cost £10 wasn't as heavy as the original but is still ok.
-
Interested in this too. Ive got a pair of boots with a bust zip. could be doing with getting those repaired, and then sold on :lol
-
£16 for a heavy zip on jacket last Friday.
-
going to take the two items to local tailor on saturday..i`ll let you know the outcome ;)

forgot about this thread :o ...took the two items to a local tailor and he quoted £25 each, not bad, seeing relatives i did`nt know i had over the christmas break reveals that one of them is a tailor :D ...hes not repaired motorcycle clothing before but has taken them away to see what he can do....not heard anything since but have seen some similar gear on ebay :lol :lol :lol

Got my gear back..both repaired for £15......but.......the zips are a bit lightweight.......so the quote I got from a local tailor of £25 per zip was probs the best option :rolleyes

Zip went on my bike jacket around Xmas time, the J&S store in Watford told me they just bought a company out and that they have a bike jacket repair department, they quoted me about £30 for a new zip and it takes about a week to do.
I just bought another jacket in the end as the jacket had seen better days though, as much as i liked it.

Yeh...I bought a new jacket aswell as zip went a week before my scotish tour last summer.....new jacket is warmer but not as dry as the old one.......nice to have a choice now. :)

For anyone in West Mids give James a call at Spence Professional Leather repairs 01902-780902 or 07940-396588. He replaced a zip on my Hein Gericke jacket while I waited for a very modest £10. He does everything you can think of relating to motorcycle wear including leathers, textile, boot repairs.

Repair always a cheaper option than replace, leather trousers zip, local tailor, £15, sorted 2 yrs ago and still going well

I had my leather jackets zip replaced a couple of years go. There was a local seamstress/stitcher in town and they supplied the new zip and attached it for only £20.
Jacket still works grand and was well worth the time spent finding her.
