The LED in my rev counter that comes on when the engine gets too hot doesn't work, and wants replacing (no continuity over it)
I was assuming it was 12v, but then my brother sugested it may not be the obvious 12 v, anyone know what it should be?

LEDs do not fuse, they are very tough. Have you tested the temperature sensor first?

no, but i know the LED is duff (was taking the clocks apart anyway and tested it).
Also, the fan does still come on

I think when turning on the ignition it should come on briefly as a test anyway, irrespective of the sensor.

Warning 'Newbie question here' I have a 1998 600 fazer and until this post didn't know about temp warning light. Could someone please give location and operation of this? :o

LED's can not be checked with a normal continuity test, they need to be checked using a diode test, and will have a forward bias voltage of approximately 2v. And yes they are polarity sensative.
Do not put a LED straight across 12v either without it having a current limiting resistor in series, otherwise it will go puff.
Some have an internal resistor, but vast majority do not
Will check manual later and get back to you if you can check it by pulling the wire of the top of the sensor and shorting it against it's body, the only diagram I have here does not show a resistor, and the sensor symbol is slightly odd, so I want to check the resistor is not in the sensor, it should be just a switch but ??

Not being familiar with the FZS, and not having a diagram, I'd assume the clock unit takes a 12V feed, and any lower voltage supply rails will be generated within the clock unit itself via a regulator on the PCB.
LED's seldom fail (as stated by someone else, they don't respond well to "normal" testing), maybe you're seeing a problem that isn't there?

Have my 98 fazer nearly 4 years now, the light or the fan never came on.

As said, you need a diode tester. Also the fan and the light have different sensors, both at the thermostat housing. The smaller one for the light. On my bike the fan's one stopped working.
Unplug the wires from the sensor and make a jumper and see if the light works.
