Hi all.
Just posted up in the introduction section, and am new here.
Just bought myself an 03 FZS600.
Basically, I'm just looking at some small changes for the time being, small, cheap and cheerful mods - Something to start making it my own, once i've paid the parents back a little more, i'll start looking at the slightly costlier stuff..
Any advice welcome
Cheers

There was a post on here a few months back where people listed the mods done to their bikes but i can't find it, maybe somebody else may know where it is?
-
Hello mate and welcome ;)
The only thing lacking on the 600 is the suspension, if I were you its here where I would start..
Other common mods are handlebars, bubble screen, hugger, braided brake lines and rear brake caliper from a thou...
-
There's a little issue with the front sprocket nut, as in they can fall off! :eek
I'd check to see if you have the newer one fitted or not as a priority.
The original one is 9mm wide, and the new one is 12mm wide.
There's plenty of info on here if you put "front sprocket nut" in the search box above.
The recommended torque setting for the new one is 90Nm, although some of us, including me, were happy to leave it at 80Nm.
-
I need to change my front sprocket nut. Cant get the flaming old one off though :(
-
Handy to know. Thanks.
By those sizes I'm assuming you mean the head of the bolt? Obviously the thread size would remain the same? Excuse me for being a touch basic!
-
The thickness of the nut
-
Oh yeah, nut lol

Took my mechanic 40mins to get my nut off. (that sounds dirty :lol )
But i s'pose it's better to have than to have lost.
If yours is on there solid i would just leave it alone until you need a new chain & sprockets.
-
The chain and rear sprocket at least are recent so will check this out I think. Did have to tighten the chain a touch earlier too
-
mmmmm cheap mods.............if the bikes new to you, check the suspension settings, back and front, what was good with the previous owned may not be good for you...i suggest going back to standard settings to start with :D
-
Wish I knew where to start really
I'm only around 60 kilos or 8 and a half stone. Don't really know what to look for in settings either lol
-
A good place to start might be preload notch 5 on the shock and 4 lines showing on the fork preload adjusters. I think they're the standard settings and probably not a bad match for your weight.
-
Have to spend a few minutes figuring these out in the week g think :)
Cheers

Surely if it's siezed on pointless changing it until you have to replace front sprocket
-
Piece of mind guess
-
!!!--- if you cant get it off then its good.
12mm is the depth of the nut face to back

Cheap and effective mods
Take off the fairings handle bars and sell them
Use the cash to get a set of dominators and renthals
-
I dont get changing the bars ! wot for

Lots of reasons. Wider for more leverage or just because you find it more comfortable.
Higher for comfort
lower... you guessed it... comfort...
It's amazing how changing the position of the bars/controls can affect your posture while riding. It's like getting adjustable pegs can stop you getting sore legs/back/arse.. haha
Some bars look better than others too. I don't really like the shape of the standard bars so will probably go for black renthals at some point.
As for the topic. Depends what look you want the bike to have... changing the lights in the dash is a good one, K&N air filter, a good service will always help, change fork oil, give it a polish.... these are all cheap ways to improve/get to know your bike :)

Wider for more leverage
yerrrh I dont get that either, leverage for what, most of the stearing is done without actualy turning the bars and when you do are you too weak to turn them. :evil
As for comfort then fair enough, but I spose I am lucky that the bike seems to be built for me-- even the shocks are perfect.
Dont bother with a double bubble as it dont make any difference.
-
Bars are something I won't be doing in the short term future, don't want to go mad just yet just tidy it up a touch
Don't even know what a double bubble screen is either lol

Instead of the normal fairing screen, a double bubble has a raised curved part in the middle of it, a bit like a dolphins head. :)
-
I see. I guess the name is just because it makes a bigger bubble over the rider? I'm assuming mine is standard lol
-
People change them (like me) to try and reduce the wind blast but I dont think anyone on this forum has found that it inproves anything
-
My bike came with one, but it was all scratched so i put a normal one on instead as i prefer the look of it.
-
Plus I'm small so probably another mod I won't be doing lol

Same here, more sporty looking for sure :)

just get on it n ride it learn what it can n cant do n ENJOY IT :) :)
then when your comfortable on it the fun starts

That's precisely my way of thinking. As it stands now I know the bike can already out-perform my limits, so I'm not too bothered about engine/suspension/handling mods, and cosmetic ones are pretty pointless IMO as bikes are there for riding.
My plan is to spend a couple years gaining experience, then buy a faster bike. Most likely a 1000.

Apologies for the ignorance on here, I had a chain snap issue and due to winter didn't really look twice at it.
Now i'm looking to get the bike repaired ready for April time, so i'm back.
Looking into a rear hugger, as the chain guard is totally smashed anyway now!
Really want the idea of a tail tidy, but upon looking, i'll need to cut the rear fairing / undertray bit virtually in half - Not so keen on this.
Also looking to change the indicators all round, probably not LED as these seem more hassle than they're worth, but probably just smaller arrowed ones, maybe just smaller squared ones, un decided on this yet.
Obviously aswell as that it'll have a new clutch rod and necessary gubbins, Chain, Sprockets and an oil and filter change due to the chain damage and so on...
Also, is a K&N Worth it, what will it do to the bike, in terms of noise / power or anything like that?
Cheers

I'm new to biking too, I've just had the carb rubber inlets replaced cos the original ones were badly cracked/perished, whilst the tank etc was off, the carb settings got set properly & balanced, along with fitting a K&N air filter. The old girl (99 600) is running a hell of a lot better. Also, fit CR8E iridium plugs & 5k plug caps, either SD or XD, I've got XDs & the leads are a little close to the engine, so I may change them to SDs in the future, but I've got other stuff to sort out before that.
-
K&N filter is good, a bit more induction noise but not much. Performance wise it'll do nothing but it's not going to hurt plus you never have to buy another filter...
Chris
-
Just done the oil and filter, perhaps when summer begins ill do the plugs and filter then :)
-
Bump the old thread, still not done much but have some renthal 755s to fit, and a delkovic can when I can find a link pipe that fits it.
Did drop the bike earlier and snap my brake lever though :( luckily no fairing damage, just a scuff on the engine cover that isn't deep... Another job to do now!
-
In desperate need of a clean but getting somewhere none the less!

Isn't the opinion to wind the pre-load right in on post 2000 forks?
Mini indicators, better than those hulking great orange things? I got 2 sets of these (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bike-It-Arrow-Indicators-With-Black-Arrow-Clear-Lens-Pair/301221062467?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D23775%26meid%3D8191796511264381376%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D10165%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D141053850466) indicator with 2 sets of these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140876523679) blanking plates, £34 inc del.
-
I need to set the suspension up but don't know how or what settings :(
I want new indicators but want them still plenty bright...
Need an under tray too as mines broken. Got my eye on one at the moment so will see what happens there and I already have 4 indicator plates but it seems 4 plates is one pair of indicator?
-
Yeah, you need an inside and outside plate to go over the blank hole, the nut on the indicator then holds these together, 2 per indicator = 8 total.
-
I just replaced the indicator lenses with clear ones and with orange bulbs, a lot easier than changing the indicators themselves and looks much better than the orange blobs. Also means they're still a decent size so people actually see you indicating too :)
