Title: '99 chain n sprox - chain length for 50T rear?
Post by: dcurzon on 19 October 2013, 10:29:20 am
Hi all
It's about time i replaced the chain and sprockets on my '99 fzs600.  Want to change the rear sprocket to a 50T (from current 48T), whay cjain length would i need?

Cheers

I'd have thought a standard one would be fine- personally whenever I have a new chain fitted after it's adjusted the wheel isn't all the way in at its shortest length!

I think the rule of thumb is for every three extra teeth (F&R total) add another whole link~ or take one out if loosing three teeth, less than three should be fine as is.

...just in case i didn't make it clear~
a whole link being normally counted as two links, cos if you remove 'one' link you'll have a right job on your hands joining the two ends. ;)

Cool.  Well, as a 50t sproc will cost around £45 give or take, i've decided Mr Yamaha actually didnt get it too far wrong with 15/48, im getting 54mpg with a 50 mile a day commute through central london.
Now i'm trying to gt the best deal/VFM for a chain/sprox kit, but DID seems to be coming up around £100 which is a bit steep for me

You have to consider longevity though, economically it makes sense to get a decent one that'll do the job well and last a long time.

Also, it would be a good idea to change your profile so that we can see what year bike you have, so that we can easily cross reference it if you ever need any help. (i know you mentioned the '99 earlier but it's easier at a glance)

Profile updated :)
I agree about the longevity completely, but if i can get the same product for £20 less then that is smarter shopping, xmas coming up etc.  Certainly not looking to go for a 'budget' no-name chain, just trying to keep the wallet a little healthier.
cheers

It'll be a miracle if you find a kit cheaper than this!

Thats right Dcurzon, mines a gold one. Only cost me £79 though I'm afraid Darrsi!   :)

And it's definitely faster!   8)
