Title: Gear lever
Post by: Fuzzy on 08 October 2013, 10:41:56 pm
Noticed something curious this evening. A bit of an obscure thing but thought I'd ask as I can't figure it out.

I was taking apart a spare lhs footpeg hanger with all the gear linkage bits still attached so I could clean it up and replace the tatty set currently on my bike. The bushings are a bit worn and the lever action is sloppy so I thought I'd replace the lever and the part that it fits onto that holds the footpeg.

Anyway, after seperating all the parts, I looked at the gear lever and something just didn't look right. Checked it against the one on my bike and indeed they are different.

It has an extra bend or two in it as you can see in the photo. The one on my bike is straighter and looks like this one in the link and, as a matter of fact, many others on ebay.

It's definitely not damaged and bent out of shape, and it came off a Fazer 600 and is the same in every other respect. I checked with AJ Sutton and the part numbers for the gear lever for 98' and 03' models are different... but I was never aware that they differed between model years?

So what the foc have I got here and what have you got on your Fazer?

I have a 98 and mine is bent but dont remember it bent as much - here is a picture after I got it on my bench grinder buffer. You can just see the bend from that angle but I will take another picture with it on the bike later

Thanks for the photo. Can't quite tell if it's the same but if it is, it might be that the earlier 98/99 bikes had different levers.

May have been bent to shorten it by the previous small footed owner.

Have bent a few over the years for people with small feet. Women with size 5 or 6 feet find the distance to the Rubber, (no laughing please) place the lever to close to the front edge of their boots making it difficult to change gear with the sole of the foot central on the foot rest.

:lol  Maybe they'd be more suited to stirrups rather than a foot rest?

@fazersharp, do you take your bike to bed with you?

I now see what the issue is - you do indeed have an extra bend from a bike drop/fall over which has bent in the lever at the rubber end, see------------

Ah, thanks for the input guys. I think Unfazed is onto something here, it looks more like something done deliberately rather than damage sustained in a drop.

I haven't got massive feet at size 7 so it still might work for me, so will clean it up, paint it and see how I go  :)

Looks like it's off a completely different bike to me.  Mine is the same as fazersharp's at the pivot, yours is a totally different design.  How odd.

The photo shows the underside of the lever, it's the same at the pivot as fazersharp's, just looks weird in the pic.

PS just realised smartypants fazersharp flipped the photo for the comparison pic as well.  Had me confused for a moment too  :rollin

Have no fear I have a brand new rubber on order, not even going to bother cleaning it
