Title: Is it just me, but when you see another biker ahead of you....
Post by: Jamieg285 on 08 October 2013, 01:13:29 pm
Do you immediately think 'PREY' and absolutely have to catch them and make the pass?

I had the opposite the other day, where I spotted a bike coming up behind quite quick.  It was a nice windy B road, with a fair amount of traffic.  It was a great game of cat and mouse, me trying to get ahead and him trying to keep up.

He didn't pass me though  :D

Not sure if "prey" is the right word in my mind, but I get what you mean. I usually like to tag on and follow more than try to overtake :P

I have a similar situation when I see those speed triggered traps which display your actual speed - flashes your speed in green if you are behaving or red if not - in my mind it is always "CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!" to see how fast I can make it past the trap... damn things will make me lose my licence...

There was one right next to my old house and right after it is a speed bump (not the ones you can ride around either) so that just added to the fun factor of how fast you can get past and then anchor on the brakes before the inevitable bump

Sounds fun  ;)

But I tend to be the opposite, I don't much like having unknown bikers behind me and tend to wave them past in case I'm holding them up.

Probably just lack of confidence - I'm not slow but would rather not have the distraction if they're catching up to me.

Although I am rather enjoying showing off my developing counter steering skills. I can only assume I look the business now-a-days  ;)

Similarly I tend to be less likely to overtake another biker than I would a car.

Different when I'm with a group of riders I know, then I enjoy the chase just as you describe.

Andy

I agree - I'm more likely to over take a car than a bike

It also depends on how close behind me they are getting - if they look like they want to get past or are getting a little close for my comfort then I'll wave the past :)

2 bikes a challenge, 3 bikes a race!

I dont know what the heck caused that vid crash, only it looks like he mistook his front brake for his clutch

Here is a clearer clip of it.
He does not realise how sevear a speed hump is untill the last moment, then he brakes hard at the last moment which helps to keap the front down, but also unloads the rear which bucks up as it hits it, he probably is clamped up hard on the front brake so the front swipes out    -    well something on that lines, check how the others bob over the bump even though they have really slowed down
Sorry - for diverting the thread   :o

I've got to admit I am the complete opposite, the main thing that appeals to me about biking is that it's something I can do on my own. So if there's another biker around I'll slow down and let him go.

I do take those as a personal challenge when I am on my bicycle. Especially if I can get them to say Slow Down. When I'm driven by petrol i just tend to go at my speed. Move out of the way if the guy behind is going quicker, will pass if the guy ahead is (much) slower but only if appropriate.

If they catch me up, then they deserve to be let past. Apart from the bell-end rider riding a brand new zx10 on Sat that caught me up on the way to devils bridge. He came screaming up behind me on a long straight into a village, then sat right up my rs, so I let him past thinking he was a fast lad.
Out the village and onto the twisties he was shit! Slamming on before bends and wobbling round them, then blasting off at WOT on the straights. I moved onto the offside as if to overtake several times, bit he kept blocking me until after a few miles I eventually got past when like a newbie he hit traffic.
I got to the bridge and he parked next to me thinking I was going to get a gobfull, but he said nothing when the 60 year old took his helmet off. Friggin born again with too Much money, and not enough skill!! >:(>:(>:(>:(

Sounds like you had a bit of sensible ish fun Jamie g & i'd be up for this type of stuff where it doesnt get too serious.like an impromptu rideout...this type of stuff is ace & worth stopping and having a yatter soon after.

If i catch up a bike that's riding smoothly then ill drop back to give him/her a bit of space & happily follow which is enjoyable, if they're only just going slower than me i'd have to really give it some to get passed them which is a bit pointless because it'll mess up my mojo & the pressure is instantly on for me to perform from then on.

If they're going moderately slower then i'd probably pass them but not on a corner or anything as personally i see that as a little insulting like jumping in on wave while surfing but that's just me.

I just wouldnt want anyone being frantic behind me because if im cornering i want to be relaxed and looking ahead round the corners & not always in my mirrors at someone i dont trust.

Complete opposite, I'm normally the one being overtaken, then get fed up when I catch them up because the retards can't go round corners!

Do you immediately think 'PREY' and absolutely have to catch them and make the pass?

No. If I catch them and if it's safe, then I'll pass. If I don't, there's no point in riding like a dick.

Neither, fortunately, did he put on concealed blue lights and pull you over...

Depends where it is really, if I'm on home ground and it is obvious the rider in front does not know the road I will overtake when it is safe to do so, if I'm out and about sometimes I tag in behind for a while and check out their style and depending how they are riding will depend if I stay tucked in, overtake or take a totally different road altogether.

At what point did I say I was riding illegally or dangerously?

I've done the proper training and ride carefully and considerately 99.9% of the time, even when playing.  This is just a bit of added fun on the bike.  No, I won't pass if it's not appropriate or potentially dangerous, but if the opportunity arises I will take it, and get great satisfaction from it.  Likewise if the guy behind me isn't showing the same sort of care, I will let him past.  It's only a game, and I'm not going to be pushed into riding badly.

Yep, they have a blade, and a vfr1200 here, they had a zx10r in Cumbria earlier on this year.
If they want ya, they'll get ya!

You didn't, but the "Do you immediately think 'PREY' and absolutely have to catch them and make the pass?" comment that preceded your "game of cat and mouse" does seems a little questionable...

90% of the riders round here are terrible all go on the straights and nothing through the twisties. Go down the Scotch piper on 'Biker Night' most of them are pricks with deep pockets and stupidly loud exhausts. I used to when i was 17 go down on my RS125 and blast bluecats, gixers through the bends every other week. I remember one guy squared upto me because he didn't like me showing him up. I always enjoy a little bit of fast riding with other bikers but 9 times out of 10 they are the worst in the bends it makes it a hazard to follow them as u dont know what to do i usually sit back way up the situation then normally blast past them.

Not to long ago I went out for a wee spin, turned right on the A76 and headed for Ayr. Any one who knows the first 30 miles of this road knows its a goodun and unbeknown to me, 3 bikes had just past that junction. I cought them up in carronbridge and on leaving the village the last bike indicated me past, so away I went, past the 3 of them and away I go, checked my mirror and hey ho they are chasing. Did I resist, did I hell, home turf and 27 years of using this road, ofski. The guy on the daytona lasted the longest before he disappeared so on I went. I stopped at a shop in Cumnock and while drinking my water, mmm, here they come, indicators on, o fck here comes a lecture or similar. Guy on the gixxer comes straight over " thanks for that mate, bloody brill are you heading back now ", " I am yes ". After some shit talk, off we all went, back down the same road but a wee tad slower.
One of them asked why I didn't have a neck a foot long riding a naked bike. Jeeze and I'm slow compaired to the people I know on here.

home turf and 27 years of using this road,

That's the key, isn't it? Loads of people can pass me on roads I don't know, cos I'm not willing to risk the "what's around the next corner" scenario. But if I know the road well, I know I can be pretty quick. Trouble is, since moving here to Oxfordshire, my rides have been taking me all over the place, so I haven't really been doing any routes regularly enough to learn them that well.
But you have to be careful not to get over confident like I did, too easy to treat your favourite road as your own private race track -  even the most familiar road can produce a surprise once in a while.

Once i was out on my sissy 1100 Virago,, i caught up a gang of about 8 bikes, firebades,R1s and the like all riding at a good pace, not racing though, i had to get through them one at a time, i did it though and fooked off into the distance.

I could make that bike go,when i felt brave

Unfortunately, because I was often riding a YBR125 before my Fazer I would spend my time being ultra critical of faster bikes and their riders: 'look at him, he's not riding that properly'; 'fuck sake, why's he going to slow/fast?' 'Didn't he notice the white line and box for cycles? What a twat!'. Jealousy of a faster bike is a very sad state of affairs  :o

The sad fact is im old and fat now so i try to ride within my own comfort zone. Of course this changes from day to day, good days and bad days, i think its all about confidence cos in most cases you will make that bend with a little nudge on the inside bar

there has to be some sort of etiquette ....
my thoughts are, if I am coming up behind another rider, hence  I am quicker , generally   most do nothing when I pass. Some tag on, few ever pass though (  :lol ).
I think if someone passes me and I am riding at the pace I want , I let them go.
You never quite know who they might be either !

I have encountered a few knobbers in my time though , idiots who let you pass, then want to race , even though you dont want to. It happened to me years ago  when I had my son on pillion in a tight twisty area of wales. Thought at the time , you pair of cretins. Sad locals who will do anything to try and improve their low self esteem. To me they aint bikers at all.

Overtaking is always best done on a straight simply because you never know what an inexperienced rider can do in a corner.I generally look for a cleaner exit from the corner and take them there if sheer speed alone isnt possible on the straight..
