Hi guys,
I'm a new rider and got my FZS600 (98) a couple of months ago and I have a noob question about mirror setup. My mirrors are the standard original ones and no matter how I adjust them, the view directly behind me is obscured by my arms/shoulders.
Is this common? How do you set yours up? Should I be looking to replace them with after market mirrors so I can get a better view behind me or am I missing something obvious?
Thoughts and advice appreciated!

Welcome to the site.
Very common problem with the box eye Fazer. The solution is to replace the standard mirrors with mirrors for the Foxeye model FZS600 (2002-2003).
-
Thanks for that. Looks like I'm off to eBay again!
-
Have same problem , but ive got used to it over time . Welcome to the site , ive been on here few years now and all the fellow foccers have been great , help and advise on here is priceless with good banter thrown in too ;)
Only one thing to do now :useless
-
This is a problem on a LOT of bikes. Probably has something to do with aesthetics or tiny Japanese test riders!
Welcome!

Yeah the foxeye 02-03 mirrors or FZS1000 are the answer, first mod I did straight after buying the bike. Originals were literally useless and these new ones are brilliant, make sure you buy them as a pair though as I was a bit mis lead by the advert that I bought mine from so only the right turned up when I expected a pair and had to ride about with just one while I waited for the other :rolleyes . Make sure everything is clamped tight, the bolts are a bit long for the original capped nuts too so you will need some new nuts without caps. They can jiggle around a little bit on the boxeye fairing bracket but not too noticeable and still a huge improvement.

Originals were literally useless
You are quite wrong sir
They are perfect for looking at your elbows.
And soon enough you will learn how to do the "funcky chicken" everytime you want to see behind
-
I still need to do the funky chicken with fox eye mirrors :lol
-
I had this prob and sometimes still do, push the shaft back and twist the tops towards you, it works for me sometimes. so it can be done if you mess about with them, my prob I gotta push them back in to get the bike in the shed so lose it lol :(
-
Wow. Thanks for all your replies! What a lovely bunch of foccers!
Taylor, I'll try repositioning them again but I don't think the stalks are long enough. I think I'm going to have to look for some fox eye mirrors.
Jason1, here's a picture!

A nice looking bike.
I would suggest you attach a cord to that disc lock and with a loop on the end to put round the handlebars. Reminds you the lock is on. Forget it once and two seconds after setting off the bike will be on its side and not looking so nice :'( .
-
Just an observation on your bike. The fairing is missing the word Fazer down the side and the tank Yamaha is not the origional (although I do like the chrome look ) so both these things woud suggest that the bike has seen "an off" by a past rider
-
I have same problem on foxeye 03 just have to take hand of bars and tuck arm in over tank to view :\
-
limax2: Funny you should say that, I tried to ride off on Saturday forgetting the disc lock. Was only nudging out so no drop and no damage done but it made me think that a fiver for a disc lock cord is cheaper than the alternative...
fazersharp: There are lots of little things that suggest the bike has bee dropped at least once. Being a novice, I didn't know what to look for when I bought the bike. Of course, now I've got it, I've met loads of people who would have been willing to come with me for advice!
-
Wasnt meaning to be picky or anything, just wanted to make sure that you were aware --- which you already were,
-
a fiver for a disc lock cord
Check you out, Mr Moneybags.. :lol

I know you weren't. It wasn't until after I parted with my cash that I started to notice. Still, it seems to ride ok and has low mileage so I'm not too concerned at the mo. I could have really done with taking a knowlable friend along when I viewed it though.
-
lol @ Buzz. Thanks, I'll order one today.
Talking of money, I never realised quite how much I would end up spending on gear. I'm soooo skint now.

Amen to that brother, I had to kit out me, the wife and two daughters. The kids share a jacket but not a head size :(
-
Must be a bit of a squeeze getting both kids into the same jacket.
-
Ah ha pigsey you couldnt help yourself
-
Thank you! I'm here all week!
-
Junk the originals and fit bar end mirrors. The scope of vision is amazing.
-
Don't bar end mirrors make the bike a bit wide? I've seen them on a Sportster I think and they seemed to stick out quite a bit.
-
They are perfect for looking behind but I think they look silly, remind me of dentist mirrors
-
get a pair of wardrobe doors like they fit on trucks these days, :D you could see back in time lol, lets do the time warp again. :lol
-
Stop it. You're scaring me.
-
Just be thankfull you don't have an Aprillia RSV, if you take your hand off the bar and move you body to the opposite you might be able to see whats behind you. :lol They were the worst mirrors of any bike I ever rode. :thumbdown
Something I came accross some time ago was an owner had replaced the standard boxeye mirrors for old R1 model mirrors which look the same but are about 2 inches shorter. I went to look at a 600 some time ago with a friend and could not understand why the mirrors were so bad when I rode it. It was when the new owner brought it home that we realised it had R1 mirrors.

They are like that on that bike just so you can see yourself sitting on it
-
Sounds like you have the shorter R1 mirrors as they should not be that bad
Ccompare them to another Fazer
