Hi,
I've got '99 FZS600 and seems to be that previous owner had to much strength when tightening the tank mount screw (this one in the center of tank mount).
After few bumps it's not working properly and my tank is loose again.
Any ideas how to fix that without drill & tap to 7-8mm?

Drill and tap a bigger size, failing that if it's a through hole (I'm not sure without looking) you could put a longer bolt through and get a new nut on the back?

Oh right, that makes sense. Just longer bolt.
I will check if there is entrance from the other side for longer bolt. Yeah but now it's too dark ;)

I had same problem and bought the same bolt and put it in. It simply re-threaded it self but I am careful just to nip it up. Problem was bolt cost 0.82p and shipping near on a £5 :eek

Or do as Mick says but i would drop a size if your going to use a nut, washer and bold so it just slips into the hole.

This is quite common on the front tank mounting bolt. I normally drill the hole out to a larger size then paint around the edge of the hole with clear nail varnish (to stop rust on the now exposed metal edge) then fit an M6 rubber well nut into the hole. Works everytime :)

i`ll be surprised if you can get to the other side to hold the nut..........bore out and re-tap ;)

Pretty sure it doesn't go all the way through, but there is a lot of empty space - I lost my original bolt so used one I had lying around which was probably a good 2" long. Worked fine and now I've found the original bolt again... :rolleyes

Yeah, because it goes into the frame ;)
There is no way to get it from the other side.
Yeah I think I need to buy a drill and tap...

I just bought another screw.....it seems the screw, not the frame is the weak point....if it was focced after a fall then maybe a new screw is all that is needed....i just popped into a place in Swansea, showed them the old one & got a matching non yamaha screw & now it's fine.

I've got a large thread self tapping screw in mine, works a treat.

I am just about to buy a drill, but I am wondering if cordless drill would be fine for drilling in metal?
Basically I don't need electric drill and I think that cordless drill it's better choice for future purposes.
What do you think?

Check the screw itself before you go drilling the frame!
The frames iron, the screw aly, its much more likely that the threads on the screw are buggered with the frame itself fine!
Just get a stainless bolt of the right size, dollop of copper grease and it'll likely screw in and stay where it should! (assuming the frame threads ARE fine)

If the bolt isn't damaged and the frame is try running the current size tap through the hole before you go up one size and see if you can clean up the threads

The thread on mine stripped, went to a mechanic (for some other stuff) and he put a helicoil in. (drilled out, tapped slighty, then threaded down to m6 again

Hi
I re-threaded the stripped M6 hole to 1/4 BSF no drilling straight in with a No1 1/4 BSF taper tap, the 1/4 BSF bolt fits through the hole in the tank as well.

The bolt on the rear footpeg is the same, you can use that. at least it will eliminate whether it's the screw at fault.
