As above, test ride coming up i reckon.
-
I have never ever had a test ride but i think this might make me travel to a dealer and ask,i think there is one in Worcester,Skellerns
-
Don't like the looks of it, but I'll reserve proper judgement until I see it in the flesh.
November issue of Bike popped through the letterbox with the MT-09 on the cover and the bold claim:
"Japan's best bike since the Fireblade".
!!!
-
Have they tested it on our roads yet or is it the official yammie launch test they went to?
-
It's the test launch. Haven't read the feature yet, but skimming reveals:
"The MT-09 instantly makes the FZ8 redundant...
...You'll need very specific reasons to buy an FZ1 over the new triple as well."
Bike verdict:
Forget the MT-01 and MT-03. The MT-09 shares their philosophy, a few styling cues and Transformerish logos, but is an entirely new experience. Light, manageable, grunty, comfy, fast -- the list of desireable traits goes on. Comparisons to the class-dominating Triumph Street Triple are unavoidable, but over a 200 mile day the Yamaha is just as agile and easy to exploit, but with a stronger engine, better spec and finer fit and finish. Details like offset clocks and high, close bars need a bit of acclimitisation, but within a couple of hours it's utterly natural. £6799 is an utter steal, but a dealer has told us the second batch of bikes will be more expensive. Buy one now."
5/5 stars
I'm bloody intrigued!
-
I think my concern now is that they will raise the price for no other reason than they can due to its success...
Lets just hope they don't do an Apple and release a new model every year with one slight thing tweaked and charge more for the privilege :|
-
:foc MT 09!!! ;)
I'll be sticking with :faz 's,
Stick a Fazer sticker on it & i'll consider.
But if i eventually replenish my funds i'll be getting me a nice, cheap, & probably sadly forgotten Fazer 8.
Poor fazer 8 :\
-
Any particular reason for the FZ8 noggy?
-
Any particular reason for the FZ8 noggy?
I like the way the Fazers rev & produce their power..im the same with cars as i like Honda vtec engines over say a torquey diesel.I dont think ill ever need the power of a Thou & so the FZ8 falls nicely in the middle between the 6 & thou & i really like the styling of the FZ8.
I think the FZ8 will be a future unsung hero. 8)
-
Have you test ridden one yet? Reason I ask is that its of the same ilk as the FZ6 and FZ1 which are fuel-injected and I've heard of the power delivery being a bit snatchy (on the FZ6 though).... of course the fact remains that I could be talking out of my arse ;)
-
Well I was planning a test ride and weighing my MT-01 in if they gave me a good price? however as I binned it last week (low speed off) I might just have to keep it as well?
-
Will there be a half faired version for us tourists i ask?
I do need a half fairing, especially when it rains from Hereford to Milan, alot of rain that is.
-
This bike is definitely not designed for touring with a small capacity tank like that. Seems to me this is strictly a fun bike, and now sounds like it'll be worth every penny if that's what you're looking for. The look still doesn't do it for me tho. It could be a good base for doing a tourer with on the other hand. KTM seem to have done it with the 1190 Adventure, and surely Yamaha don't mean to use this triple in just one bike?
-
That tank size is a reall off-putter for me, but I love the overall package.
-
People always get put off by tank size, but I couldn't give a monkeys about it. After all, it's not like we have a shortage of petrol stations is it? And every time i fill up i get to show off my ride :D
-
fuel tank range is important if the bike is to be a good road bike. My speed triple had an 18 litre tank and that enabled a decent stint of hooning or touring if you wanted. But 4 litres less is a massive difference :\ . Sorry , but like the vfr 12 this sort of thing IS going to affect the riding experience.Basically after 10 litres or 90 miles the reserve will be on !
You have to compare it with the street triple, cos basically Yamaha have seen its success and this bike is its answer to it. BUT the street has a 17 litre tank. I doubt if the Yam extra cc will make a massive difference but almost at the outset it has made a negative before its had a chance. The price is cheaper than a street but I aint sold on the yams looks. I dont think at this stage it will scupper the street at all.
Just wait for Triumph to react. Already they have 0% finance on any triumph this month, I am sure they will look at price if Yam dont increase theirs.
If yam do increase price, then they are giving themselves an uphill battle once more.
I wish them luck , but its not cut and dried in my thinking.... :( ....their best advantage over most of the other jap offerrings is at least they made it a triple not a 4 ...IMO the best config for a road bike.
-
I dont think ill ever need the power of a Thou
:eek Huh?
Must admit tho I am nowhere near using all the power of mine... yet.
-

:eek Huh?
Must admit tho I am nowhere near using all the power of mine... yet.
I DO NEED it!!! Gimme more, MORE, MORE, yeeee-ha!
But seriously folks, for me, the best thing about more power in higher capacity bikes is having lots of midrange, where it actually becomes useful. It would seem that triples develop quite a bit of midrange, and so I would agree with pitternator that it probably makes it a very good road-use engine. I believe the biking press likes to use the term "flexible" :rolleyes
-
When I read the MCN test a couple of weeks ago I don't recall them mentioning tank range so maybe it's not the issue everyone is expecting?
That said if the range is less than my Gen2 I would seriously think before buying.
-
I'd expect getting 150 miles to the tank full or a bit less if riding really hard, I'm ready for a rest after 60 miles, must be my age :o
-
Lock
If it is a 14 litre tank, most reserves are 4 litres. 10 litres at 9 miles /litre ( 45 mpg average) = 90 miles.!! :'(
That would fook me off, when my m8 on a street is getting 130 miles range before reserve light comes on .... :)
-
Lets just hope they don't do an Apple and release a new model every year with one slight thing tweaked and charge more for the privilege :|
Well, why not? It's basically what the japs have been doing for the last 50 years. A great example is the old Gpz550H1 from 1981, in 1982 the H2 version came out and the only differences was the colour bars on the bodywork were reversed and the rear brake switch was changed from a mechanical one to an electronic switch. So they charged an extra £100 for the H2.

Bike magazine are raving about the MT-09 this month.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/motorcycle_manufacturers/yamaha/10285598/Yamaha-MT-09-review.html (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/motorcycle_manufacturers/yamaha/10285598/Yamaha-MT-09-review.html)
Fuel capacity is hardly generous at 14 litres, but the MT is reasonably economical, averaging almost 50mpg to give a typical range of about 120 miles, if not the 150 miles claimed by Yamaha.

Reviews are estimating it at 48 mpg so you're not too wide of the mark, I'd be filling up every 2 days. :\

Foc that, with the Power Commander on the "economy" map I can get 190 miles out of my FZ6 before getting to the reserve!
And I've done 20 miles on reserve with fuel still left in the tank.
-
Well i went and saw it, just before it went on a test ride, so no ride for me. :'(
In the flesh it looks awesome much better than pics. It's got a very aggressive riding position, so that coupled with a 14 litre tank, average mpg was showing 49.9 which considering people will be yahooing around on it is not bad, means its more of a toy, plus theres no storage space.
Keep the fazer and have a second bike, if only i could afford it.
-
I suggested to the mrs that I should buy one and keep the FZ1 in case I don't like it. :)

:lol Mines away at the moment maybe i should just use the credit card.

There was a new one parked outside tinklers yamaha dealer in norwich on Friday. Number plate was mt09 yam. That's kinda cool I guess...
-
I drove over to Cresent Yamaha today just to have a look at one as it was
raining. It looks nice in the flesh, sitting on it the bars seem quite high
and wide and the footpegs quite far forward and low. I'd say its halfway
toward a trail bike riding position. I was quite suprised at this, wasn't
expecting it at all. Great for my knees though. Frank started it up and it
does make a nice noise at low revs. Nobody had booked a test ride in the
afternoon and he suggested I book it for 3pm and hope the sun came out.
Driving home the sun did come out and the roads started to dry, so I got the
bike out and rode back over straight away. I had 1 1/4 hours on it. 60
miles. I went from Charminster past Three cross and down the Cranborne Chase
road towards Wimborne.
Sitting on the front part of the very triangular seat the bars are very
close and it feels like a supermotard. Back a bit on the wider part feels
more normal. Its very narrow, my knees didnt rest against the tank like the
Fazer8, a bit like the F800GS I rode in Feb.
The engine is a peach, pulls hard from low revs. I seem to remember the
Street Triple I had came alive in the 6-9000 range (or 5-8000 cant
remember), with a huge induction roar as sound track. No induction roar like
that with the MT-09, but a decent noise from the can and power was
everywhere. 50mph in 4th on the Fazer8 gives a bit of a dead spot at 5000
rpm, but the MT-09 had none of that, no holes at all. Riding along back
roads in 4th and overtaking traffic was easy. Impressive.
Gearbox was great. The bike had done less than 600 miles and was due its 1st
service soon. Bikes I've run in have had sticky gear changes as they
approached 1st service mileage.
I found the suspension fine for my tastes, it soaked up a lot of bumps well.
Much better than the stuff the Fazer8 came with. Even with the posh Ohlins
shock I've got I have it set slightly softer than the suggested standard
settings.
Pillion seat is small and there is nothing behind it.
A couple of times I slowed down, stuck it in 2nd and opened it up just to
see what happened. It did sit down slightly at the rear, but I wouldn't say
it was bad. Whilst doing this changing up from 3rd to 4th the front did get
flighty over some small bumps. The front came off the ground once. I put
this down to the higher wider style of handlebars and riding position and
nothing to do with the suspension. Too much pressure on the bars at speed
might cause a few wobbles.
This is where comparing the MT-09 and Sreet Triple like the mags are doesn't
make sense as they seem so different in feel. The only thing in common
really is 3 cylinders. It isn't a Street Triple with an 850 engine in it.
The brakes were fine without being impressive.
Recently I had a go on the new Tiger Sport, and reckon the MT-09 has a much
more lively engine and better suspension. The Tiger was far too hard on the
rear, although I didnt try adjusting it, although it felt like the spring
was way to stiff. Steering felt oddly heavy at slow speeds too. I wasn't
impressed, I really wanted to like it. So as a comfy sporty tourer it failed
big time.
The only thing I didn't like was in 'A' mode, the sporty one, at low speeds
in 1st/2nd opening from throttle off wasn't to clever. It just got so far
and whacked the power in. In the other 2 modes it was fine. In 3rd and
above 30-35 mph it wasn't a problem. Defintaly needs a tweek there and I can
see why it gets a mention in the mag tests. Its not as bad as some of them
make out though, in my opinion.
The saleman said up until the previous test rider, the average mpg readout
said 54mpg. (Pinch of salt) That dropped to 44 mpg by one rider. Did he ride
it just in 1st ?? Doing normal test ride stuff I raised the average up to
47.5 mpg, so reckon for me I could get over 50mpg no problem. No idea if the
gauge is accurate.
Hopefully Yamaha will make a MT-09 with a decent 1/2 fairing/screen. A bit
of extra weight over the front might help the flightines too, although if you
dont want that you could just not accellerate as hard. Maybe a bit of
an adventure style, it sounds like they are going to judging from the riding
position. Something like that would have been just the thing required for
my last trip around Romania. I was on the pegs a couple of times, and a
Fazer8 isnt designed for that.
-
Well done Phil, for writing up your impressions, good to read. Sounds like Yamaha did do their homework then. I'm hoping they'll use the triple engine in some other configurations, maybe even a sports tourer with a bigger tank and as you say, perhaps a bit of a fairing; maybe do the engine in different capacities too. By the sound of things, it'd be worth it as long as they keep it that good. Will be interesting to see how it develops.
-
|Watching MOTO GPquali today and the MT09 adds were plentiful,,looks veryu nice
-
Thanks for the write up Phil. Sounds good. I'm hoping to get a test ride on Monday.
-
V good write up Phil
-
V good write up Phil
Thanks. I'm off to Yamaha with all your responses and going to ask for a discount :)
Regardng the cheaper price than we have come to expect from Yamaha, I didn't realise that the Yen has lost value against the £ by 25% in 2 years. Thats good news for the Japanese as their exports will be more atractive and good for us as we getter cheaper Japanese goods.
I only hope that for the half faired version they dont do what Ducati did with their Hyper-Strada touring version of the Hyper-Motard, and just stick a tiny handlebar fairing and panniers on, and say there you go, theres your tourer.
-
Picked my bike up from the dealer yesterday (just in for a new back tyre). They had an MT-09 in for test rides, the manager told me it's been out all day and everyone who'd rode it had ordered one. Apparently most of the staff were getting their orders in too.
-

Poor fazer 8 :\
Had my Fazer8 for just over a year now and love it only gripe I have is the size of the tank would have been better with a 20 litre tank.
when I have finished with it (if I do) the wife has already got her eyes on it to repace her fzs600. :)
-
Had a look at my local dealers.
Looks really good in the flesh, so much better than the pictures.
Sat on it and it feels a little more upright than my FZ1 but feels a natural position.
They started it up (in the showroom) and it sounds a bit tame if I'm honest.
It had the comfort seat and pillion seat cover fitted and they looked really good.
Although it had a grey tank it's called racing blue :lol
I want one :)

What will you get next though.......would it be an mt09???????
-
I'm beginning to think that my only real issue with the MT-09 is that every other bugger is going to have one as well :P
I kinda like having obscure vehicles as such - the FZS600 is a bit of a step away from that but I know very little about the motorcycling world :P
-
Must admit it does look good, but I'd be focced with the tank range.
I can hit reserve after 80 miles on me FZ1, reserve runs dry around 26 miles too, so with 4 litres less in the tank I'd be stuck in a forecourt a LOT!
I need to refuel at least twice a week on 'Bee as it is whilst commuting, reckon I'd be every day and a half in this wee fella.
Still, through a bigger tank and some more cubes at the engine, I'm definitely sold!
:D

It'll be interesting to see what it's like at a constant ton on the motorway. Then the guy in the Astra van getting out of the way and snapping the throttle open to leave him behind?

All this talk of the MT-09 which I think looks like an excellent bike has just led me to the MT-01 and 03 which I had never even heard of. The MT-01 is quite possibly the most badass looking and sounding thing I have ever laid eyes on other than the old V max! If it were my money I think I would get a 2nd hand one of them instead and go and tear myself off some small continent with the torque that thing has. Utter beast! New addition to my dream bike list I think.

That's on my bucket list bikes. I need to trawl the dealers and get myself a go on a few bikes that I've always liked but would never buy?

I popped on over to CMC Clay Cross to have a look at one yesterday. It very much feels like sitting on my old F800GS, perfect angle on the seat/handlebars/footpegs for comfort for me. Their demo has done 800 and something miles and the mpg readout is 53.2mpg which is great saying it's been hammered on the throttle as folks take it for a blast.
I'm known locally for getting the max mpg out of bikes (tight arse) so they want me to take it out for a couple of hours to see if I can get it into the 60's (my 800GS was up in the 80's riding how I ride :rolleyes )
If it does then the 14 litre tank will be enough for 90% of the people out there !. It won't be a popular touring bike even with the comfort seat, rack/topbox and pannier rails and bags they have in the marketing blurb and now on-line too. It's light beyond belief, fully fueled up you can move it about one handed, picking it up off the sidestand. No centre stand which is a downer for me and always on my list of must haves on all my previous bikes.
I'll get back to you on the test ride report as and when. :D
-
It's ugly as Foc as is:-
ER-6n
Z800
NC700S
Diavel
And worst of all XT660Z Tenere looks like it's hit a wall :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin
Something has gone very very wrong with front end bike styling of recent years :eek

Today was the dry day to go bike testing :b
I can say it's pretty hard to fault the MT I took out today. It had the little screen on and the touring seat, which might help the comfort a touch. The mode offerings are just a gimmick, cant really see the point of them, even in soft B mode the bike pulled up hills in fifth whereas my 1000 would be down to third on some of the lanes I was on.
Weight feels like half of what my gen 1 is and makes it a delight to move around.
Here's the best bit... these roads are ones I use often so I ride them the same no matter what bike I'm on. My bike would be doing 45-50 mpg on the same day at the same temperature, the MT was doing 68.1mpg, so even with a little 14 litre tank it can break 200 miles to a tank. I took it back to the dealers and they were most happy that their new bike, not fully broken in yet achieved that figure.
The $1000,000 question is "would I buy one " ?
YES, for sure, but you can't help but think this peach of an engine will get used in and even better frame with longer travel suspension before too long, and that would be the bike for me !
Go test ride one, it's a really good bike, honest.

I have not seen it in real life ----but it is very nice to see some real pics instead of the arty farty ones that you canot see the bike properly---thanks mate
-
I sat on one today , I like the looks especially the stubby exhaust , it was comfortable but i'm only 5 foot 8, if your taller I reckon it would feel cramped , I don't think the small tank is an issue as I wouldn't want to go touring on it , to me its more a hooning around on a weekend kind of bike , I was gonna enquire about a test ride , but when I got off it the seat was covered in dust from my work trousers so I made a quick exit .
-
Agree with the comment about the pictures - its not exactly a great looking bike, but it seems to look better in reality than it did in all the art and marketing shots
-
YES, for sure, but you can't help but think this peach of an engine will get used in and even better frame with longer travel suspension before too long, and that would be the bike for me !
Nice pic and interesting MPG figures.
I'm waiting to see what else they use it in too. A decent 1/2 fairing on the bike as it is would suit me. I wish they would announce now whats in the pipeline instead of this wait and see game.
-
If there are indeed other versions of this in the pipeline, I think they'd be daft to announce them so soon after this bike hits the streets, as a lot of people might then change their minds about buying the current version and wait to see what else comes along. Also, hanging back will give them time to check what kind of feedback this one gets, and perhaps help them to make any changes they then feel are necessary to improve sales on future models.
-
Maybe, but I dont want a naked.
There is the Suzuki V-Strom in the shops soon, thats got my interest, but its a fair bit more dosh.
-
A few more points I forgot to mention.
With it being a naked bike there was a lot of wind hitting my knees, far more than my fazer or F800 come to think of it.
It has an idiots kill switch (sprung loaded)
The mirrors are crystal clear and vibe free, such is the smoothness of the engine.
The digi-display does not reflect hi-viz back at you so you can actually see the neutral and indicator warning lights (Gen 1 trait and hi-viz wearing bod that I am ).
It has the lowest dipstick in the world, and the worst seat lock position ever ( it's under a cap beneath the rear mudguard).
I had no shoulder/arm/wrist ache after a constant 2 hours of riding ( I said it fitted me well in the showroom seat test).
Yamaha have followed BMW and Triumph and made everything an extra, where I would expect it to be standard fitment (flyscreen, radiator side covers for example).
There is space under the seat on the non-ABS bikes just behind the tank where the unit would have gone that could be useful storage.
The standard Dunlop tyres would never be my 1st choice of rubber but they didn't step out of line at all on the muddy lanes I was on.
No vibrations through the pegs or bars at any rpm wearing the same gloves as I always wear (this has got to be a miracle 8) )
I could have ridden it all day given a larger bladder (CMC's cafe has big cups and should not be taken lightly)
It sounds like I've talked myself into getting one, as I liked so much of the ride today, (the Mrs is OK with it too as long as my Fazer gets sold first) if you order one now you might get it for January :eek seems everyone wants one too !
-
Out of all the bikes I've ridden, it's the only one I've ever thought of buying new, it really is that good::)
-
PC, Akrapovich and a suspension upgrade would perhaps turn it into a truly awesome machine by the sound of things. Although the look still doesn't really do it for me, the red/black one in the Cycleworld article isn't so bad imo.
-
Gravesend yammy dealer has had 2 demo bikes - both crashed I've just found out :eek

Speaking of which---- thems that have had a test ride, or on other bikes, what deposit or insurance excess did you have to pay the dealer befor the ride, and if you bin it is that lost.
-
No deposit to ride it, but the excess was £500 if you damage the bike. I questioned that to see if an indicator was going to cost me that. It wasn't the excess was really if you bin the bike.
I got the trade in value of my 2005 gen 1 by email this morning. £1600. Yikes. Anyone need a cheap Fazer?
-
No deposit to ride it, but the excess was £500 if you damage the bike.
Yeh that is exactly what I was told and it put me off. If I was dead serious about buying then maybe but at the same time with £500 at the back of my mind I aint gonna give it a proper test. But I aint buying without a test but im not serious BUT I might me if I had a go but I aint having a go for the risk of £500.
Anyway what's that all about - if I was to have a test drive in a car then no such excess involved. I wouldn't even mind paying a non refundable £25 damage wavier fee to cover for the £500
-
MT-09 === FZ-09 ? :eek
Is there two bikes or are the press getting mixed up with the Fazer line of bikes?
-
MT-09 designated FZ-09 in the States. I had similar confusion when reading about the "new Kwak Ninja 1000" on an American site. Ninja always meant to me a sports bike (ZX-6/9) but the Z1000 (new ones anyway) is apparently called a Ninja over there. It's a bike that seems to be blurring the lines of sports/sports tourer anyway.

An exercise in futility......
Can't afford the modern world.

I remember only getting very close to around £1500 trade in offered for my 2002 gen1 against my brandnew FZ1 back in 2008.. :grumble
My local Honda dealer offered only around £1000 trade in against a brandnew CB1000r :thumbdown

Bet you can't wait!
Is ABS worth the extra on a bike?
I was lookin at the one at my dealers that had a prang. Somehow someone has bottomed the sump out and pulled the oil drain plug out.
It had a big notice taped on it, DO NOT START NO OIL !!
But the thing that struck me is how small it looked. Previously I'd only seen it in the showroom but this was the first time outdoors with the bike on it's own.
-
its not for me, but i understand its appeal. and it should set a benchmark for far more sensible pricing. i love the triumph street triple/speed triple, but you dont half pay for the name on the bigger engines. bikes are getting way to sanitized and loaded with rider aids for me, i think the fz1 will probably be the last of its kind, they wont build a cross plane crank version without it having a computer to" nancy" every move you make on it.. :(

I was lookin at the one at my dealers that had a prang. Somehow someone has bottomed the sump out and pulled the oil drain plug out.
A known problem on Yamahas :lol

I saw one parked up and I thought to myself... It don't look so good, then my other half ended the thought with a comment... That bike looks shite... lol.. Can't say I see what all the hype is about. My point is that all these new bikes look very similar in design.. If you going to do something.. Do it radically different that no one else has done.

I agree it's fugly.
I don't do looks on bikes I choose them for how they ride. I've had some right stick over the years for my "choice" of bikes.
I like this bit of a tarted up version |

Asked about the Akropovic full system and was told £940.
A lot less than I thought it would be!

Thanks for all the pictures and test ride reviews...but still am not sold on the looks. A street triple looks the part...a speed triple will kick the MT 09's ass everywhere.
About the only good thing is if its price stays at same level, it will be a credible alternative to the street...but I just hate the looks . It looks a complete bitsa IMHO.
You have to admire the triple engine config though for power torque and feel....its why I am so sold on triumphs triples. Will have to get me another for sure.!
Its almost embarassing though how Yamaha have tried to copy the street triple ....but they fooked up the looks....

Except the weight?

Looks are a personal view lord Jon, for example, I have never been drawn to the Triumph yet I am to the Yam.
Don't know why, I've got no real reason I can state!

Have Triumph got the monopoly on triples then?
I think the pre 2013 Street Triples are ugly bikes but still bought one. I quite like the looks of the MT09 overall.

Jon I had the chance to go for the MT09, its a nice bike for the price, but nowhere as nice as the Speed triple I chose, glad I spent the extra.
And now I have a speed triple, I do see why you rave on about them. Just put twin akra's on, you want to hear it.

If it is a 14 litre tank, most reserves are 4 litres. 10 litres at 9 miles /litre ( 45 mpg average) = 90 miles.!! :'(
That would fook me off, when my m8 on a street is getting 130 miles range before reserve light comes on .... :)
My Honda NC700 has 14 litres (under rear seat! ) and does 200 miles on a tank!

Reviews are estimating it at 48 mpg so you're not too wide of the mark, I'd be filling up every 2 days. :\

I've seen quotes of 120 miles plus, to a tank on the MT-09. Might be a bit optimistic for most people's riding, but in the UK, that seems adequate if you like to stop and stretch the legs now and again. Personally, I rarely do over 100 miles in one stint without requiring a short coffee/ciggy break, and stretch. Long trips on a Sunday in France could be a problem tho... :\
