Hi,

Just wondering if anyone out there has made their own Luggage rack ?

I know Renntec and givi do them, then theres the ugly wingrack, but if anyone has made or adapted another one it would be good to see & get ideas as I may end up making my own for my boxeye

Please post pics and info that may help.

Cheers for any informative/constructive replies.
Sandscorcher.

I made pannier racks for my boxeye because nothing was available for some non-fango panniers that came my way. The non-fango mounting is different to Givi etc.
I already had Givi arms for extra support to a rear rack mounted in-place of the grab rail. The back end of these arms forms the rear mounting for my pannier racks. For the pannier racks I used 16mm dia x 1.6mm wall thickness steel tube. The tube is welded to some brackets made from 3mm steel strip. The other mounting points I used were the pillion footrest hanger bracket mounting points and one of the bolting point for the grab rail on each side. The bottom of the non-fango panniers just slot onto the tube and the top mounting was something I turned up from stainless steel bar, but is specific to non-fango. I also fitted a tube near the back which ties each side rack together for a bit of extra rigidity.
These are the only pictures I could find on this computer which show it, but I have some that show it better somewhere else which I'm sure I could dig out if you think they will be of interest to you.

Yeah, I used to punt them out on here a couple of years ago, they're not too difficult to make.

I made the whole lot out of 25mm box section and 25mm steel plate. I'll see if I can dig some photos out.
Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!

If the link works, here's the thread I did with some piccies.  :D

If it doesn't work, look up 'DIY luggage rack' in the search button.

If your carrying any large weight like I did, such as a top box above 30 litre, or a 40kg kit bag!! it would be very wise to reinforce the two arms that bolt to the bike through the bolt holes all the way up to where the carrying part of the rack starts with either angle iron, or at least a thick steel plate. It's a known weak point that even Renntec haven't sorted out with their rack, and have had several fracture. I've personally had a Renntec rack break, hence why I made my own.

Further to my previous reply I have found a few more photo's for what they are worth!

I was trying to get the panniers as far forward and as low as possible, as you can see in the next two photo's.

Not suitable for a pillion passenger in that position.
The cross tube I mentioned connecting the two frames can just be seen. It passes through the holes where the winkers fitted. I mounted them on brackets further back to clear the panniers.

Totally agree with what Stevierst says about strength of Rentack rack side arms. That's why I fitted the Givi side arms which you can see just under the plastic side pannels.

Originally made this one for the T'cat, out of angle iron, the angle from rear footpegs to plate mount are slightly different between bikes so cut and bolted to adjust on the side as can be seen.

Some say...

Ohh well fella's.

I've ended up buying a Givi Monorack for less than materials would of cost to make my own rack.
Just need to get a good look at it & maybe a re-paint if needed before fitting it.

But thanks kindly for the replies.
