Title: Electric troubleshooting help
Post by: dudeco12 on 03 February 2018, 11:43:55 am
Greetings,

I have a strange issue with my '99 FZS600 where it starts, rides normally, everything works for a while after which it suddenly cuts out - any gear, any speed, throttling up or down, doesn't matter - the time just comes, engine cuts out and leaves me stranded for about 3-5 minutes, where if I press the starter button, the oil and fuel warning lights come up, as they would when starting with the kill switch in the off position. After 3-5 minutes it just starts up normally again like nothing happened and the process is repeated.

Does anyone have any idea what this may be? I suspect either the cutoff relay or perhaps the pickup coil by looking at the circuit diagram, but your input would be appreciated!

Does it run rough at all before cutting out?

It cuts out instantly, no rough running. The only time it runs a bit rough is when it's still cold and it reaches around 5000 revs, but I took that as normal since it goes away when warm.

Next time it happens operate the kill switch a good few times and see if it starts. Sounds like a loose connection or dodgy kill switch.

And check ignition key switch.

its not the ignition switch as the dash lights are still on and the oil/fuel light come on it is a warning to a switch issue

clutch switch only effects starting when in gear and wont cut an engine out
sidestand switch will cut out an engine when put down
kill switch will cut out an engine when 'killed'

im putting a fiver on the sidestand switch as it goes to normal after a few mins and no one ever thinks of sidestand switches while F-ing and blinding at a bike that wont start (yep me included) yet it gets the most stress as it gets all kinds of road crap flying at it and sticking to grease
