Lights out 4th August - Portsdown Hill Portsmouth
« on: 28 July 2014, 08:44:48 am »
Don't know if you are aware Monday 4th August 2014 is 100 years since the start of  World War 1
to comemorate the nation is been urged to turn off your lights and light a single candle between 10 - 11pm
Hampshire Branch of Royal British Leigion Riders Branch are meeting up on Portsdown Hill (by Micks Burger wagon) and lining their bikes up facing out towards the sea.
at 10pm we will revout engines on full beam then cut them. we will then observe a 2 minutes silence before lighting our candles for the hour.
then i believe is a ride down to southsea past the memorial

this isn't just for ol' n bold... any bikers who wish to show there marks of respect more than welcome. and don't feel you have to stay the whole hour or do the ride past.
I'll be there with some old shipmates and some meeting up with new oppo's

but if your not in Portsmouth area why not look to see what local is going on or just in your own home??

Lest we Forget!!
It ain't what you ride, it's who you ride with!!!

I can't do Portsdown but my village of Stubbington is doing something similar.  No bikes but candles.  I'd love to do Portsdown but have to be up for work a few hours later. Poor excuse when so many died I know.
Sent from my villa in the South of France.

Snook, Madmondeoman (or whatever he is called these days) and BigMac should all be there too. We are planning on meeting up somewhere before riding down to this event together.

just copied this of face book,

"The 2 & 3 wheeled community of the Portsmouth area will come together at the Viewpoint between 2100 and 2130. Then at 2155 they will all shine their main-beam headlights towards the city, providing a beacon-like illumination over the City that should easily be seen from The Solent (weather dependent). At exactly 2200... the headlights will be extinguished and at 2230 a hundred poppy-red sky-lanterns will be released to mark the 100th anniversary of the United Kingdom entering the First World War.

All bikers/scooterists/trikers, etc are welcome to attend. Only 100x Sky-Lanterns will be permitted to be launched (In accordance with the instructions passed to the Civil Aviation Authority and the Maritime Coastguard Agency). These Lanterns will be on sale at the Viewpoint on top of Portsdown Hill from 21:30 - suggested minimum donation of £2.00 with all profits going to the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal"

yeah I'm meeting a couple of mates beforehand, 1 of which is the organiser so I should be there on time lol

Hey Robbie,  where did you find this on Facebook?  I've searched for it but can't find it.  I'll share it on my page. Don't tell anyone but I have loads of mates on scooters that would love to show support. What was the exact name of the page/group please?

Liverpool council are turning the lights out on most if not all their bldgs. from 2300 - 0000 tonight
a giant candle will be projected onto the Liver bldg. and an image showing a poppy and Tommie's will be projected onto another bldg
I'm in work tonight but the crew will be briefed as to what the day is all about and lights will go out on station

It was a great event. I was stood right by the Gazebo for the service with BigMac, Shaun and my son. Shame several bikers didn't take any notice of the 2 minutes silence and decided to ride out instead but overall, a great night and well done to the organisers.

Yep. I was stood just behind the three guys in the gazebo who were saluting all through the Last Post.

I think the Burger shop did well last night too. the queue never seemed to be less than 100 people long.

I would have liked to have been there, but I was on holiday in Devon at the time :/

I've seen some video clips friends posted on Facebook which show a bloody good turnout :thumbup
