Weird noise under acceleration
« on: 07 April 2015, 12:15:17 am »
I've noticed an odd noise which only happens under acceleration. It's a sort of hissing whirring sound a bit like a dry bearing. It can get quite loud. I noticed the chain was slack but haven't run the bike since tightening it. The bike's only done 14k.

Is it a new chain, or original?
If you adjust or remove the rear wheel you can slightly offset the chain and it needs to cut a new path on the chain guide on top of the swing arm.
This can cause a whirring sound, even more so if you fit a heavier duty new chain.
Once it beds in the noise will go, just make sure it's not too tight now and it has plenty of chain lube on.

The sound occurred before I adjusted the chain. Oddly it seems to happen when the engine is warm

Gearbox has a whine to it, which i never liked at all so i put a noisier end can on to drown it out.
But you said you haven't run the bike since, so it may have been the chain slopping about.
You need to try it then see if it's improved, but i must stress again, do not have the chain too tight, or you'll have more issues.

Do you have the new front sprocket nut on?
I'd give that a check to see if that's still sitting there happily as well.

It does seem better now but not completely gone. I haven't ordered the nut yet, something to do today. I'm glad you experienced the gearbox whine I was wondering about that.

That just sounds so distorted I can't hear anything but crackles. It happens in all gears maybe slightly worse in top but hard to say.

Could it be cam chain noise?
Hmmm.... I took the sprocket cover off and everything seems ok. I think the noise is coming from the drive chain area and the chain does jump around a bit. Looks like new chain time.
There is a tappety noise from the head, what is a normal cam chain sound? The tensioner looks to be a bugger to get to.

It's impossible to accurately say what it is from your description. Anything on the bike that moves could be making a whirring noise. If you're not sure your best bet is to bring it to a mechanic or an experienced biker and let them check it out before replacing anything.

Well I had the chain and sprockets changed and what a difference! Definitely quieter and the exhaust sounds more rorty. Probably because I can hear it now. I'll have to take it for a proper run now.

Did you have the upgraded sprocket nut fitted?

Dunno. I got the motorbike shop to do it. Wemoto only delivered the nut today. They said it was in stock when I ordered it a week ago but only dispatched it yesterday.

You may need a torch, but if you look into the sprocket cover from the opening where the chain goes in, you can see the nut, if it's flush with the end of the threads then you have the new one, if you can see any threads at all sticking out past the nut you have the old one.
