max voltage
« on: 14 May 2013, 07:58:02 pm »
Lost a load of electric bit on the Gsx600f yesterday. Lost indicators, horn, brake light, all the dash lights and rev counter. Plus the fuel gauge was reading 1/4 now reads almost full.
Not had much chance to have a good look yet, even to check the fuses I have to strip off half the panels.
But I did run a volt meter on the battery with engine running, at 5k manual say it needs a min of xxx volts but don't give me a max. It's putting out 14.7 v which seems a little high?

I checked the manual and for all the above to be effected would meen 3 fuses blown at same time so I'm thinking more reg/rect

Will look deeper once I get a day off but just wanted to know if there should be a max volt from the charging system.

My fazer pushes >14v when running.  Dunno if it's right or not but that's what it does :-P

Opinions are like A**holes, Everyone has one.  Some people seem to have more than one though which is a bit odd.

14.7 sounds a little high though not much as 14.2 is normal. Could just be inaccuracy on the meter.

sounds like a earth problem.
Another ex-Fazer rider that is a foccer again

Cool, I just got a bit worried when it went that high and I couldn't find a max in the Haynes.
The rest I will look at on my day off
Thx :)

The Haynes manual says "No load regulated voltage 14.7v at 5000 r.p.m."
Yamaha manual says "No load regulated voltage 14.1 - 14.9v"
Mine shows 14.6 on my digital meter with no load. Can't remember what it was with the lights on but probably a bit less. As BBrown points out we don't know just how accurate these meters are, but as far as we can tell it looks like your bike is fine.
I'm not an expert on this but I remember something about lead-acid batterys start to gas above 14.4 volts and above 14.8 volts is getting too high. The other snippet is that AGM (absorbed glass matt) batterys should not be charged above 14.7 volts.

You say the engine were running - was it idling, or at a specific rpm.
Try the test at 4/5k rpm and see what you get.

I'm inclined to think earth fault as well atm (without being familiar with the GSXF, and with no diagram etc to hand).

Sorry I didn't notice it was a Suzuki  :o . Most of my replies are in the FZS600 section and I just got carried away.  The figures I gave above are all from the manuals for the FZS600, but I don't think they will be much different for your bike.

The 14.7v was at 5k, at tick over (2k - 2.5k) its just over 13v

Turns out 2 fuses blew, this took out all the above. I find it odd 2 fuses blew at same time for no reason, but I replaced them and everything is working again.
Will see how it go's. As far as the voltage I am happy that its not to high. Most other bikes seem to be about the same.

Think it will just be a wait and see if it happens again then find out why.
Thx for replying though as it helped set my mind at ease.
