Where can I get valve shims in 0.01mm increments?

Hi there,


Does anyone know where I can order valve shims in 0.01 increments rather than the 0.05 increments you get on most sites? The acceptable range is 0.04mm (0.21 to 0.25) so ordering a 0.05 smaller shim will take me from just under tolerance to almost over.

in the past i have faced shims down to size. the good news is that they harden when machined so no worries about them going out of spec. i doubt you'll get shims in 1/100th of a mm increments anywhere!

Not u less you cut up a feeler gauge, but I don't think it's advisable :lol

Not possible to get and only as sadlonelygit says if you grind them down.

Have you checked all the shim sizes as you might be able to swap some around to get the clearances close to what you need.

The size etched on the shim is not always 100% accurate and you would be well advised to check them with a micrometer.

I will check my stash tomorrow and see what I have close to 1.89.

Note:-
The specs for the exhaust valves is 0.21 to 0.30 not 0.21 to 0.25 as stated in the Yamaha service manual and the Haynes manual.

What!!?? Is that right??? Where does that come from if Yamaha and Haynes say .21 to .25? Not that I doubt you... but...

I only have one outside spec and that gap is too small so it needs doing anyway.

Great idea to swap them round though - none of the others need doing but a swap could avoid the need to get a new one and even out the gaps across all the valves.

If I do still need a specific 0.01 multiple I guess I'll call the dealers in the area - the bikes roll off the production line with 0.01 multiples so I guess the dealers will have accumulated them as they do services...

But I'll look at a swap first, thanks unfazed.

having just re-read your post............if the yamaha tolerance is 0.04, then they only need to produce 0.05mm shims as 0.21 is in tolerance!
most bikes don't need touching until 40k plus anyhow, so a valve at bottom limit should be fine for 12k+

Both he Yamaha service and Haynes manual are both confusing because in one place it says 0.25 and another it say 0.30.   :'(

The early 98 R1 service manual say 0.21- 0.30 and the EXUP service manual is the same

I rang Yamaha Ireland (did not really believe them) and also rang Yamaha UK and both said the FZS1000 are 0.21 - 0.30 ex  :eek

When told this I checked with a few different mechanics and all said the same, early R1s and Fazer 1000 5 valve heads are 0.21 - 0.30.

I have always set any 5 valve heads between 0.21 to 0.30, my own included without problems.

On the shim size, the nearest I have to 189 is a one marked 190, but measures between 190 and 191on the micrometer

Might write to Haynes out of curiosity  :b

The difficultly here is that the discrepancy exists in Yamaha’s own literature.
My view is that an exhaust clearance range of 0.21 to 0.30 mm has the same tolerance range as for the intake valves and that if you aim for a clearance of 0.25 mm you would err very slightly towards the tighter end of the range. Unfortunately without access to the factory there’s little we can do to confirm this.

I generally prefer the tighter end of the range, myself...

So I went to the local independent mechanic (Chris Self, Ipswich) and he loads of all sizes - and did a handy swap-for-free deal too.


After bringing that one vale clearance into correct range, changing plugs and cleaning air filter the delayed pick-up problem is gone but an old problem is still there - if I accelerate moderately at about 15mph in 2nd gear out of a bend I get a weird noise that sounds like some slack in the transmission slapping about. Pulling away from the small roundabout at the end of my road is the litmus test - always happens. So I'm synchronising the carbs - simple job, done it loads of times before... but on the Fazer - NO SYNC SCREWS!!! They're not where the Haynes manual says they should be and I just can't find them!!! What's going on there then!!?? The carbs do need balancing as they're a bit out and it may solve the slapping. But I can't find the bloody screws - a simple job is impossible. How do the bike designers manage such a shitty trick!!??


It's a 2001 FZS 1000


Any advice much appreciated!!

Ah, found 'em! Flipping heck they were where Haynes said they'd be, just about a foot behind a gap too small for light to pass through... slight exaggeration but I do need to buy a new screwdriver with the reach to get at them!!
