No more tax discs..
« on: 30 August 2014, 05:27:02 pm »
So I was talking to my missus about these new tax discs that are going to be replaced next month by online ones, and be moaning the fact that like mots, it will be easy to forget if it's run out if you havnt got a physical reminder you can see on the bike.
She's said " talking of that, are all your bikes mot'd?"
Errrrr....

Checked and both the fazer and Bonnie were out, the fz1 by two months! Use both weekly...eeeek!
Ran em down to Danny d's in norwich today and they both flew through fortunately, just gotta hope I got no nasty surprises in the post..

Easy done as you say mate. glad your all legal now.

I dont't mind them doing away with the tax disc, but I would have preferred both the tax disc and the MOT slip (which used to be like this) had a wee sticker on it you could peel off and stick somewhere to remind you.

Alternatively, do what they do in Canada, and have the tax (they call it something else) expire on your birthday, no forgetting that!

Im lucky in that my cars tax and MOT both expire in August near my birthday...the bike is in May though which is a PITA as there is nothing near that date to remind me :o

Having been caught out like you, I registered with www.motremind.me

I didn't want to give them my vehicle details, so registered each one as an AC, and put a description for the reg no (bike, focus, etc)

Receive an email a month, and then 2 weeks before MOT expires, job done.

Stuck mine on my calendar, wife's calendar, and my phone reminder calendar.
Forgot last year too, and both bikes went out by two months, and I use one every day!
You'd think I should know better really
Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!

Could've sworn my renewal was September, but after reading this post thought i'd quickly check...........it ran out on July 22nd.  :rolleyes

That's very unlike me, but in fairness i have had a very preoccupied mind recently.

I'm off the road at the moment anyway, so i might order a new front tyre then try and get it sorted midweek.

Little matter of a fractured hip to contend with, but i worked and rode on it without knowing it for 9 weeks, i thought i had a trapped nerve, so it'll make sense to get it sorted before rather than after possible surgery.  :\

Do you lot not check your post, the DVLA sends out reminders now and will continue to do so.
And as for MOT's running out, well you're just mad you lot. :rolleyes

First time i've ever missed it in 27 years riding, so i haven't done too bad.

My insurance is on the day of my birthday, no forgetting that one.  :)

I did this with my car... could have sworn it was at the end of May, turned out it was near the beginning of march. I somehow got away with 2 months of no MOT after doing 2,000+ miles up and down the M4 / M25 - definitely got lucky with that one

No more tax discs...... At least the bike world is saved from one piece of anodised shit! No more shitty Chinese monkey metal tax disc holders, I have a whole box of em that I have taken off of bikes. Time to add them to the weighing in pile!

I thought this was going to take effect in October? So I'm guessing I'll get one when I renew in a few days (waiting for the V5C with new address to show up)

The DVLA state that they are still going to send out reminders when your RFL is due, even under the new system.
Yamaha Fazer 'the only bike you'll ever need' maybe ???

I thought one of the ideas for the new system was monthly payment by direct debit removing the need to renew every year as it was automatic as long as insurance and MOT are in place.

It is, but it's an optional thing, I believe (I think there's a charge for paying monthly, similar to (but less) than the current one for a 6 month disc. So I'll be paying annually

I get a text from the garage a couple weeks before the MOT is due. Surprised more garages don't do that.

Just had my V11 tax reminder hit the mat today. Just the two options of 6 months at £44, or 12 months at £80 as usual. There is a bit on it about you not getting sent a tax disc out.

Just renewed it today while I have the reminder in my hand before I forget :o
