Centenary Memorial Poppy Tour 2014
« on: 04 August 2014, 07:01:03 pm »
2014 marks the centenary of the Great War. On the 22nd of August, at midnight, I will carry a single poppy from George Square, Glasgow, to the Thiepval War Memorial in Northern France. The poppy will be carried by motorcycle through Scotland, England, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Lichtenstein, Italy, Belgium and France, covering over 3000 road miles before being placed in honor of those who sacrificed so much. All proceeds will be donated to Erskine hospital, who look after injured servicemen and women of Great Britain.

Give what you can, and thank them for the sacrifice they have made for us.

All gave some. Some gave all.

When are you expecting to arrive at the Thiepval War Memorial in Northern France?

Are you heading through Loire/Normandy area? Myself and Big Mac will be down that way for the last two weeks of August if you need a coffee/beer stop.

BMs place is in near Lassay-les-Chateaux and I am near Ambriere-les-Vallees (Both near to Mayenne)

BB, my pal is up from Preston with her husband and kids, so my house is upside down just now. I will check our dates when I get back to normal. I know we are riding from Italy, through Switzerland and into France and dropping near Nancy. Then we move on to Amiens for one night before going on to Amsterdam. I'll let you knnow the dates when I can.

Paul, your mmore than welcome mate. We aare only doing about 350 miles in enger'land, from the boarder to Harwich. We depart Glasgow at midnight and expect to be at the ferry port for 8am. If you fancy a midnight convoy pm me and I'll send you my number. We could meet at a service station or something :)

I am paying for EVERYTHING out of my own pocket mate. Every single penny I raise is going to the troops. I wont even take a tank of gas out it. Lets face it, its not a chore, is it. Riding through a beautiful continent with my best mate for 17 days. I am only able to do something like this because these brave people put themselves on the line. I don't consider it charity. I think of it as trying to repay a debt. And now I sound like a smug twat.

I plan to actually take the CASH (justgivig goes straight to them) I raise (through work, friends and so on) to the hospital with some pictures to show the guys and girls where the money came from and how I generated it. They don't often get visitors. Especially the old guys. Some supper cool people in there too. Tell you stories that would make your toe nails curl.

I can keep you posted with progress mate. You can pick us up where suits and drop off when your tired  :lol

Heading from up North to Harwich means you'll be doing A1/A14 so will be passing within a mile of my place.  I'll join in any convoy for the last leg to Harwich too.  Presumably you have fuel stops planned so I'll join in at one of those, Peterborough A1(M) services maybe?

This is getting rather exiting. What I will do is have my Garmin plan my route from Glasgow to Harwich (fastest including motorways, not U turns or Ferry's) and let everyone know. Its only been a few days on here, but I can see this turning into something special... Foccers for the troops  :lol

Having done most of the journey a number of times recently, you'll be looking at M74, M6, A66, A1, A14.  It's about as close to a straight line as you can get!

Got your fuel stops worked out yet?  I'm assuming Peterborough services at around 6am so am getting myself prepared for an early start to meet up with you.

You guys are more organized than me  :lol . My work has been having me in every bloody day. 51 hours overtime this month, and it's only the 14th!!! I am off for 31 days as of the 22nd though  :D .

Right, I just fired up the Zumo and took a picture of the route (still getting to grips with it) and then compared it with google maps. It seems to be the same road its taking us, so here is the pic of the Zumo and the screenshot.

If you want to further investigate search Glasgow to CO12 4SR and it should give you the same result.

We will stop for fuel every 150 miles or so. I can't commit to specific times, but we set off at midnight so you can work out roughly when we'll be passing you and let me know.

Feel free to hit me up for any more info and I'll get back when I can.
