FZS600 Fazer / Fixing puncture of a ZR rated tyre
« on: 10 November 2013, 08:26:04 pm »
Just picked a puncture on the rear tyre of my Pilot Road 2s. A screw nicely embedded. Just checked the website o the tyre place I normally go to get tyres to see his prices for repairing punctures to find he doesn't repair ZR rated tyres. Is this normal? I had one repaired a couple of summer's ago on Pilot Road 2s at a different place.

FZS600 Fazer / Headlight unit mot failure - Update
« on: 24 April 2013, 03:18:35 pm »
It passed on the Re-test :D

Took the cone out. The MOT testing guy didn't know what function they served. He reckoned that light beam patterns were usually negatively affected without them in. But obviously not with the Fazer. The adjusters worked. It was only the cone falling in front of the light beam that meant the beam pattern couldn't be adjusted properly. Saved  minimum of £95 for a second hand replacement unit. New price is obscene. Thanks for everyone's advice.

FZS600 Fazer / Front headlight unit question
« on: 19 April 2013, 04:17:10 pm »
My 00 FZS 600 has just failed its MOT. The metal cylinder piece that sits around the main bulb has come away from the reflector housing at the top. It looks like the heat from the bulb (possibly non-standard) has caused the point where it joins to the reflector to become brittle and break.

A new unit costs a fortune and I can only find an 01 model unit second hand so far and even that's £95.

2 questions:

Is the 01 model headlight unit compatible with my 00 model?

If I bodge the current unit by trying to fix the detached cylinder piece by possibly gluing it in place, will the headlight unit still be able to adjust using the adjustment screws?

Any solutions welcomed.

General / Excellent fuel economy at the moment...
« on: 27 February 2013, 09:04:16 pm »
as the bike has sat in the garage unridden for the last 6 weeks. Above freezing temperatures and sunshine promised for Saturday. A trip to the Penny Garth Cafe at Hawes looks to be on the cards. I'll be wearing ALL my gear to stave of the chill.

FZS600 Fazer / Front brakes sticking
« on: 24 February 2013, 08:19:27 am »
Happened about 5 weeks ago so I took off calipers and took out pads and cleaned up the pistons thoroughly. Put it back together and they seemed ok. Bike not been ridden since and they are sticking on again. I can free them up a bit by wheeling the bike in the garage. Original hoses. Fluids done about 16k ago. Pads in good nick.

Other suggestions?

FZS600 Fazer / Loud engine knocking - big end?
« on: 24 November 2012, 02:06:47 pm »
Had to abort my ride today. The bike developed a loud knocking sound coming from the bottom end of the engine. When I stopped and revved it in neutral, no knocking. But when riding the knocking is regular and increase with speed. I can also feel the knocking. I'm not at all mechanically savvy, but have a feeling this might be terminal. Any advice?

General / Heated grip glue
« on: 03 November 2012, 05:09:40 pm »
The throttle grip from my keis grips has come loose so need to fix it back in place. In the old days we used hairspray. Does this work still with the newer hairsprays? Or any recommendations for alternatives?

General / Heated insoles
« on: 01 November 2012, 08:15:32 pm »
Two rides in the last few days. Withe Autumn firmly on us and temperatures well down in single figures it was time to dig out the winter gear: Heated grips; Oxford muffs; merino wool long sleeve top; Assos cycling winter wind proof long sleeved top; sleeveless wind proof ski gilet; pertex wind proof cycling cape; lined textile jacket; winter fleecy cycling Tights; lined textile trousers; waterproof over jacket and trousers; alt-berg waterproof boots; winter gloves; thick socks. Needless to say I was dry and toasty....except for my feet. So, I've just ordered some Keis heated insoles to, hopefully, give me toasty warm toes as well.

FZS600 Fazer / Pilot road 1s
« on: 29 October 2012, 03:15:36 pm »
Have been using PilotRoad 2s for last 18 months but I've seen Pilot Road 1s at about £50 cheaper per pair. Has anyone used them? Wouldn't mind knowing how they compare in terms of grip and wear rates to Pilot 2s. I get about 7000 miles out of 2s and am going through 2 sets a year so I am looking to save a bit of cash if possible.

FZS600 Fazer / Changing chain and sprockets - How long?

How long do you reckon it would take for a mechanic to change the chain and sprockets plus the rear pads?

FZS600 Fazer / New downpipes fitted
« on: 21 August 2012, 09:40:08 pm »
Just fitted some from Sandybikesspares. The old ones came off easily. New ones went on like a dream. Look great. The pipes came day after ordering. Test ride tomorrow. Something's bound to go wrong now.

FZS600 Fazer / Which spare bulb set?
« on: 20 August 2012, 01:30:35 pm »
Going to Europe on Thursday and need a spare bulb kit. Do I need H1, H4, Or H7? Or all? Halfords do one of each at a tenner a throw. Manual not clear which one. Mine's a 2001 FZS 600. Cheers.

FZS600 Fazer / Gear box shaft replacement
« on: 22 July 2012, 01:04:53 pm »
It looks like the thread on the end of the gear box shaft has been damaged by the locknut coming loose from the front sprocket. Anybody know how big a job to is to get it replaced or whether the end can have a new thread cut in? Any idea on cost for labour etc would be useful if I have to take it to the local mechanic.

FZS600 Fazer / Nut size?
« on: 12 June 2012, 07:33:05 pm »
Hello

Does anyone know which size spanner/socket is needed for the large nut that secures the front sprocket on a 2001 FZS 600? None of mine are large enough (sockets, not my nuts, of course).

Thanks.

General / Strange sight today
« on: 26 February 2012, 07:34:15 pm »
Just dropped the kids off at the local sports club this morning in Huddersfield. Waiting at the junction to pull out when along came 6 Lambrettas/Vespas with riders in full Mod gear AND in the middle of this 60s timewarp an FZ1 ridden by someone dressed in 'normal' bike gear.

I hope he wasn't going too far with them. 90 miles to Scarborough at 60mph and plenty of stops to let the engines cool down won't be much fun. Still, be good for fuel economy: might even get 200  miles before having to refuel :)
