Hi Fella.

Thing is they'll only be able to get in contact from here and see this mesage if they both log onto this site. But it seems the re-direct from the Yuku site isn't always working.

I only got the re-direct to here by chance after doing a google search.

Right been getting few enquiry's on people wanting to buy there own shock's

so to clarify this is the shock you need to buy (this is scousy's shipping out wen's)
this also answers the condition of the shocks i get at most they have done run in miles only this one's don nowt

(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-vuX4gHOzycY/TYjb_B9RsjI/AAAAAAAAAvU/vn4jqsgUMCE/%252521CES0JKwCWk%25257E%252524%252528KGrHqZ%25252C%252521lwEz%25252B2CIlkiBNRbQ%25252CYYbQ%25257E%25257E_12.jpg)

this one run in miles only

As you can see some have paint damage this is at the back of the shock and not seen when fitted
this is because when they are removed to fit ohlins there not to clever at looking after them for example the ones from paul brice racing
were all stacked on top each other in a corner all 30 of them

Also please use the foto's here to make sure if you are getting your own that it matches these only or as four others have found to there cost they WILL NOT fit

A question for anyone who has done the R6 shock mod. How have you overcome the problem of the R6 shock having a 10mm top mounting hole, and the  Fazer having  12mm mounting holes? I can only think of drilling out the shock, but there is not much meat in the bush, or making two bushes to fit in the mounting bracket, a bit fiddly, any other ideas?

Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: devilsyam on 11 October 2011, 10:28:26 pm
drill it but use a pillar drill to keep it inline there's enough meat dont let it over heat as you will spin the coller within the bush then you are fooked
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: Gray fox on 12 October 2011, 10:06:32 pm
Thanks for the advice, just drilled the top bush no problem. Now i want it to stop raining so i can go for a test ride. Should work well with the R1 forks.
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod

so how did it go dont keep us waiting lol
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: Gray fox on 16 October 2011, 11:19:29 am
Sunshine at last, test rode it and am well pleased with the shock mod, just set the sag at 20mm, 10 clicks out on the rebound, 3 turns out on the high speed compression, 20 clicks out on the low speed. Ride height set to standard with shorter dog bones, it's useful working at an engineering company! Result after 2 years of fiddling with the handling, it's finally how i want it. A new pair of 021s are the icing on the cake. The shock mod is a great budget answer to rear end problems, many thanks to devilsyam for doing the research. Only problem now is i have ground the blobs off the footrests

Hooray. I am in.

Yuku did not let me know of redirection so I used Luke's redirection service lol.

Thanks for this Luke. But thanks even more for the shock. I know I have said this in email but I wanted to say in public that the R6 shock has completely ironed out the sagging under power which was getting on me tets.

I would add to Luke's fitting instructions that removal of the top shock bolt is made muuuuuuch easier by the use of a 14mm socket on a long extension and a universal joint knuckle. Do not use a socket without the U.J as it will slip.

Easy. Thanks again, Luke.
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: devilsyam on 24 October 2011, 10:59:36 am
Funny i tried that with the 1/2 set i have here and couln't get the angle rite to get the socket on cleanly hence the spanner was used perhaps with a 3/8 or 1/4 drive set the smaller dia tool will allow better access
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: tomjimtom on 26 October 2011, 10:13:13 am
I found with that bolt it was easier to hold the nut with a spanner and get someone to undo the other side with the ratchet, much better access and had no problems.
Not recommended for all of them though, think one of the bolts has a really shallow head...

Tom
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: devilsyam on 26 October 2011, 10:37:31 am
funny the top bolt is captive on one side (ie wont turn when undoing nut)

Post by: Rafer on 21 November 2011, 11:25:48 pm
Just an update to my R6 shock mod. Up early yesterday and went on a long spin 200 miles ,A and B roads. I set front suspension back to standard settings as per Devilsyam's suggestion. The only way to describe how the bike felt is surefooted and planted.First 100 miles were dry and the bike went where I pointed it,tracked the road lovely. I'm no racer but at the same time I like to press on, at no time did the bike wallow or weave as it would with the old unit. I have Pilot road 3's on the bike and coupled with the R6 shock , the 2nd 100 miles were  bliss. I don't mind driving in the rain and I am already impressed with the P R 3s, the R6 just  improved the feeling in the wet, I have never felt so surefooted in the rain. A big thank you to Luke (Devilsyam) for all the work on the shock project and supplying it and the stainless dogbones. As Mods go this one is a lot of bang for your bucks.

Got shock today. Well packaged and opened up by my Govnor who said "What the foc I didn't order that... I bet it's for that boy who's got a bike for brains and pistons for bollux"  :lol

I nearly spat my coffee in the tank of a chainsaw.

I'll fit it when I clear the garage and do a back to back comparison, before and after. Let's hope the tarmac warms up a tad.

Cheers Geeza!

Luke,
Just to let you know that it is now fitted and feels like a new bike. I am a complete moron with mechanics but managed so it's not a difficult conversion.
A separate thread on this site mentioned wheelies - with the new shock it no longer squats under hard acceleration and gets the front end nicely light. Next step? Learning to get the front wheel up on demand and keep it up.
In the unlikely event that I ever find another Fazer owner in Thailand, I wil let him try my bike and you will have another customer.
Afetr that? Finding out what this Ivan's stuff is all about.

Hi all,  time to add my (quite verbose) two pence.  Feel free to just read the first and last paragraphs and ignore my drivel in between!

Another "+1" on Devilsyam kit.  I sent him my R6 shock I sourced, and he sent it back  with all bits ground and drilled, and the shock cleaned and all adjusted up for my ample bodyweight, along with good instructions and a shiny set of dog bones - all within a few days!

Fitting was quite easy, fortunately I could get to all of the bolts with a ratchet an spanner, even the top shock mount one with the addition of a UJ and a couple of extension bars.  How people undo that top mofo with a 14mm spanner I'll never know - I had a 2 foot ratchet on there!!  Anyway, ignoring the bolt size differences (instructions say 19mm on one, but they were all 17mm or 14mm on my bike) the instructions are more than informative enough, and the new shock just plopped straight in with no issues.  Only thing to be careful about is the washers glued to either side of the top shock mount - in this cold weather they popped off when I looked hard at them.  I just covered them in grease and got them to stick in place that way whilst I bolted everything up.

So, how is it I hear you ask?  Well, firstly let me say that I couldn't find the stock settings for the front forks as recommended, so they are set to 11 clicks out on compression, and 4 clicks on rebound with a couple of rings showing on the preload.  I did also pop the forks through the clamps 10mm to quicken up the steering.  If someone can confirm the stock settings for me I'm more than happy to try them, I think I might dial down the compression setting a touch.

Anyway, I digress, my first impressions as I warmed up the bike gently were wow, this feels SOOO much lighter - once moving at any speed it feels like 10 kilos has been lopped off, not the 1 kilo difference between the two shocks!  She also felt much more willing in the corners, catching me out with her eagerness to bend over :)  So, I topped up her kangaroo juice, and went off on the hunt for some nice roads to play with.  Once "pressing on" a touch more, the bumpy potholed roads didn't upset the bike, she felt a lot more composed and glued to the roads, attacking corners with a new limpet like quality akin to my old CBR6 - it felt great!  Obviously not being a riding God I cannot give quantifiable evidence, but I was attacking corners more quicker, with absolutely no dramas - and both bike and rider felt a lot more comfortable and confident.  The upgraded ability of the back end seems to compliment the front end too, and that is much improved.

We then had to stop for a set of lights on a dual carriageway - and I wobbled up to the front, around the shiny metal bollards.  The lights changed and off we set - much like a scalded cat.  The difference in acceleration behaviour is quite something, gone is the feeling the back end is attached to a pogo stick!  The only motion is forwards, and its quite intoxicating!  I then attacked a fast dual carriageway section at a fairly unreasonable pace and the increased high speed cornering stability is quite apparent, again very confidence building.

Then back to home down slower twisties that I knew well, of course now I was happy and warm, as was my steed, so we "made progress" quite significantly here too.  She does now seem to have much more of a tendency to lighten the front wheel and shake her head when pushing hard out of corners, also hitting the odd crest in the road did see the front wheel lifting here and there - not wheelies or anything (I still can't do them) but definitely much more eager to lift an inch or two off the road and make you look like a hero.  There is absolutely no drama from the back end, just happiness and compliance with your every whim.

So in summary (if you are still with me) a VERY worthy upgrade, making your bike feel much keener, more planted and giving you much more confidence - There are no downsides it seems.  If you have some spare pennies - go buy an R6 shock kit from Devilsyam and get it on there - you won't be disappointed.  I've fallen in love with my bike all over again - certainly rekindled "the spark".  My next job is to remove the AIS facehugger, and see what removing a bit more weight does for us!

Flip...I did the shock mod a couple of weeks ago and also did the AIS removal at the same time. I've only had the bike out once since and have to agree with your comments. 'Composed' was the word that came to mind on that single trip. Not had time to get 'hooligan' like with it yet! :D

Actually got mine fitted yesterday.

It has all been said before how good it is. Love it.

As suggested ny Luke, the shorter dog bones are not needed. I had a jack-up kit on and the bike still turns as sharp as before, but with more stability too.
It helps the front end too, but I'm going the attack that soon, also mentioned by Luke.
Setting is spot on solo.

Thanks Luke. Another recommendation.

It does not matter wot colour red, black.yellow or silver

there is no difference in spring rate
hope this clears it up

Bugger can't believe I just missed out on a yellow sprung shock and I bet the sring rate is different cos its yellow eh? I'm amazed how much lighter the r6 shock is compared to the standard one!.....or is the cos r6 one is clean! :rolleyes
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: dickturpin on 15 March 2012, 10:43:33 pm
I went for silver cos I think that is the heaviest spring rate!

Just a note to all which is not in the instructions but is common sense when you think about it.

Remember to prop up the rear of the bike because when the bolts are removed from the shock the rear end will drop and sit on the foot pegs scraping the rear plastic  :eek   :o
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: devilsyam on 19 March 2012, 10:20:52 am
ok not understanding this how does the shock get near the footpegs?
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: chr999chr on 19 March 2012, 11:08:44 am
When the shock is removed there is nothing to hold the rear of the bike up. The rear end will compress and come to a rest on the rear foot peg mounts scratching the rear end plastic.  :\
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: devilsyam on 19 March 2012, 11:33:02 am
ok call me thick but if anything the arm falls away from the rear pegs not towards it are you on a paddock stand as that would make sense but not with the stock center stand
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: 1967fazer on 20 March 2012, 07:53:00 pm
Strangely enough, I've just done mine, whilst it was on the CENTRE STAND! and I had no probs. However, with all due respect, if your daft enough to try changing it while the bike is on a paddock stand, then yes the arse end of the bike will colapse in a heap, quite possibly with you under neath it! :eek
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: squitbit on 21 March 2012, 12:50:07 am
If you hit the pegs when you're doing this then you're doing it wrong, big time.

Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: devilsyam on 21 March 2012, 08:14:25 am
Perhaps it was wrong to assume everyone has a center stand although i only know of one bike that dosen't because of a brace being in the way

I have amended my instructions to cover this now as we dont want bike's falling over everyware :'(
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: chr999chr on 22 March 2012, 04:42:18 pm
Hmmm now thats strange i changed the shock while the bike was on the centre stand but there is marks on the rear seat unit which look like the rear peg has touched it. Of course the rear end will drop dohh  :\   i can't figure out how they got there.

:pokefun If the bike is on the centre stand the frame which the rear pegs are attached to is fixed and only the swing arm can move when the shock is disconected, so how can they contact the rear seat unit?

Rode to work today 50 miles, no existent, just pick a line and go   :D, several people have commented that the back of.the bike looks higher, I suspect that this is due to my old shock being fuc'd, also noticed that you get the front end to rise realy easily so lots of fun  :)

I have done this shock mod and just returned from a few days in Wales after 500+ miles, I can say it is a worthwhile mod, the difference can be felt from the off and the bike feels a lot more planted even fully loaded with topbox, panniers and a f** f***** like me.

I actually purchased 2 shocks and made 2 kits so have a spare with a red spring.  ;)
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: pitternator on 27 April 2012, 08:35:46 am
whats the ride quality like ?..a lot has been said about  the bikes feeling planted, much of which can be attributed to correct weight matched springs,as the stock shock is way undersprung for a heavier rider. As soon as any other shock goes on a fazer its usually an improvement as such...Its the damping quality I noticed with say the Ktech shock, much more compliant ( when its working ! )..I dont particularly want hard damping , as my bike is predominantly a tourer, so I need ride quality, but with good handling.

I have a back problem and managed approx 100 mile straight run without a stop and then only for a toilet break, got a bit of a numb bum on the M54 towards the end but soon as we got on A roads that seemed to disappear.

If your coming over to K-Tech your welcome to come and have a look as I'm only a couple of mile down the road.

I rode a new bike today.

It looked, smelt and felt like the old one but riding it, it was like a new bike.

So stable and chuckable. No wallowing about. Fanfuckingtastic.

A bit bouncy on some fast bumps but a bit of damping adjustment will sort that.

Thanks Luke for a great upgrade.

Right then a reply to Pitt and Luke  :D

fitted the lovely lickable R6 shock and polished bones yesty morn , only took less than an hr to fit and that was cos i had to refer to haynes manual for torque settings .
just to get you up to speed , i run standard front forks with 15mm thru the yokes and the forks still on original gloop oil in.
i went for a test ride , finding smooth tarmac to uneven crap roads.

first findings the bike now holds a line the rear firm but forgiving , the front forks now talk to me thru the bends , i now feel planted and can feel the front tyre. there is no see-saw action anymore. the ride is smooth on a little overbanding on uneven surfaces coming from the front end.

give it the full monty berries the bike is stable and feels alive with the tuning Mike did.

the shock is night and day and made me realise how shite the standard shock is. Luke set the shock for my weight around 11 stone , i have left the setting as they are. the bike is balanced , all it needs i think is a oil change in the forks .

i cant stress how good the R6 mod is and the bike feels comfortable, taut and no understeer on sweeping bends . Its FANTASTIC! :D

Cheers Luke you are a Star! the best dollar i have spent on all the mods my bike has !

thanks a million times :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

run with 4 first if two up run 5 but you will find 4 suits most
tryed sendin a few pm`s bud
just read on your instructions settin 4 is for up to 11 stone an it`s on setting 4
just makin sure it`s spot on before i fit it
17stone the now, an run fast an occasionaly have my son as pillion

I have just purchased a fz1, interested in this shock mod, but i am 15 stone, so if 4 is for up to 11stone, what is setting 5 good for, or setting 6 if they go that far?
If i am sending my weight to you etc, should it not come set to the setting i need it on?
Cheers
Stevie

I'm 17 stone with my leathers on, the shock came set on 4, I did find it a bit wallowy, albeit, controlled wallow. Clicked it up to 5 and its loads better, just shows up the front end now. To be honest, I haven't done anything else to it, need to set it up properly, including the front end. Still glad I made the change to the new shock tho :)

steivie nowt dont pm, dont work for sum unknown reason email me devilsyam@gmail.com

this mod is for gen1 not fz1

4 suit most with the adjustments i make to the other settings make it all pull together but if you recall in the instructions i do state
you can go up to five 2 up with gear

it is subjective i have to pic middle ground as set up for info given

im not perfect, close granted, but not perfect yet

fitted shock today was pretty straight forward

it does look good, took the opportunity to clean hard to reach parts while it was stripped

lubed all bearing`s as well

not test rode it yet but does feel a lot firmer

didnt use the new shiny bones as was on tiptoes so cleaned painted and fitted standard ones now happy as can get both feet on ground

so the original hyperpro dogbones i bought to lower it are now redundant

gonna send pic`s to devilsyam i canny work these bloody thing`s lol

625 pounds, which is much better than the 450 pound rate of the gen.1 o.e.m. unit. This R6 shock is three pounds lighter than the gen.1, o.e.m. unit, also!

i have yuppie ohlins yellow and stocker red good to go

Fitted shock today gave the bearings a grease and stuck it back together all done in about 40 minutes. Took the bike for a spin and cant believe how much better it is than with the stock shock fitted looks fantastic in yellow with the nice shiny dog bones.

Luke
Even though I didn't buy any R6 rear shock bits from you, thanks for all the advise.
My settings are a bit diffetent because I'm building a sidecar onto the side of my Fazer Gen1. Luke advised trying first setting 5 and then go up or down depending on the ride. Setting 5 feels great.
And I also made up a set of shorter than normal dog-bones to keep all the backend height.

Compared to the oem shock... someone needs to slap the engineer who decided to put that original shock in the FazThou!!!
 :)
Thanks Luke

Now who can help me with the tic...tic...tic...tic noise comming from the cam area????

Nice load of posts, seems brilliant work ,

My 2007-8 fz1 seems hard on the rear, at speed on the A roads bucks me off the seat ALOT  :eek

Maybe i should start by adjusting the spring tension,,perhaps the last owner was a fat bas**rd  :lol

Anyhow, will these sorted shocks fit my model?

Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: pitternator on 25 July 2012, 07:13:08 am
I would read up a bit about suspension before you do anything ...sounds like you dont have much idea !...

it dont matter how much anyone weighs if the spring is too hard for their weight....
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: manuel32 on 25 July 2012, 07:40:31 am
Correct !!

I will do a trial and error ride with the shock,,is there off the shelf springs for the standard shock or does one have to source one suitable for a lighter bloke?

I will also check to see what the compression and rebound are set at and see where they can be bettered.

Cheers

Hi Luke, Jase(Wrexham) ere bud, I fitted the R6 shock today and fitting was fairly straight forward as per instructions said, test ride was well what can i say? AWESOME!!!!! bike has been totally transformed, the rear does no longer squat under giving it some gas :-) and the bike no longer runs wide on   a bends as before, also bike does not wallow on cornering. you are a very gifted man! Thank you for your help and knowledge in coming up with a cure to the handling issue on the Fazer (at a fraction of the cost in buying a new one!) I have had my Fazer 5yrs this November and i have never been happier with it than i was today when i took it out for a test ride!Oh and the 'dog bones' are the dogs bollocks too! I sat there for half an hour trying to decide whether to fit em or not as they look that good! LOL

Thanks Luke!

Mounted the shock yesterday without any problems. Looks really good with the polished dog bones and the yellow spring against the blue paintwork. Haven't had time to ride it tough, waiting for the rain to stop...
But just getting on the bike and bounce around on my fat ass, I can already tell the difference in how well the stronger spring and comp-dampening works.
Aiming for a test drive this weekend. Will post my opinion and some pics after that.

cheers!

Went for a test ride yesterday and I'm really impressed by the behaviour of the bike. Much more controlled over bumps and steering is also faster. But best of all is the fact that it does power wheelies in 1st and 2nd without nothing more then just a twist on the throttle. :D
This was a great upgrade for this bike!

My rear tyre had seen it's best days (long ago) so it got what it deserved.

Just an observation. After damaging my 600, Ive just started using my thou (with r6 shock) in cold weather. At the previous ok settings ,the rear ride is much firmer ,probs because of the cold oil in the rear shock. even my partner on the back has noticed the harder ride, If i could be arsed i could probably turn down the compression to get back to the previous preferred summer setting,  an interesting seasonal difference i have never noticed before!

Any tips on removing the bolts for the linkage?

I threw my tools out the pram this afternoon after no amount of force would budge the bolts. Managed to burr one of the nuts with the spanner.

p.s the bolts are 17mm not 19mm as in your instructions.

For you foccors that are doing the R6 shock upgrade , it would be worth upcycling your original shock to the 600 foccors... as some one who has done this on my own 600 its definitely worth the upgrade on the baby fazer!!  :lol and can make your upgrade a little more pleasing that you have a) saved a few quid & b) improved the ride experience for riders on 600's!!  :D

as previously posted stainless and the cost of polishing has gone bit daft so in order to keep cost down for those who are not to worried about bling polishing i have had steel ones made and powder coated black
this will means they will be tough against are good ole uk weather
the black bones will make the package £20 cheaper
the stainless will still be avaliable for the bling bling

just back from a very fast blast on my new suspended r6 shock and new tyres. First impressions are the bike feels really planted on the road with a nice amount of initial flickability, it also takes really fast sweepers in its stride. I removed the jack up kit and fitted lukes dogbones and lowered the front end. The bike sits slightly lower to the ground, which makes it easier to move around also. A very big thumbs up for the r6 shock mod :D
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: Mick-H on 16 April 2013, 11:51:01 am
Another happy biker, shock fitted. The ride is much better at the back end to the point that it shows the front end up a little  :rolleyes  but should be fine for my gentle riding style.
For anyone else a little short in the leg I stayed with the standard dog bones which drops the back end around 10mm so I did likewise with the front.
The bike is now much easier for me to move around when I'm sat on it as I'm not on tip toe anymore.
Getting the bike on the centre stand is a little harder but doable and it sit's more upright when on the side stand, ground clearance is also a little less but again not really an issue for my type of riding.
Well worth doing and will be even more so if we can start selling the 1000 shock on to the 600 lads.

So how much would you chaps be looking at selling the thou shocks for and are they a simply swap over?
Interesting question, not a clue as to what it's worth or if it would be a straight swap.
If I could get half of what Devilsyam sell's the R6 shock I'd be happy but that may be way over what they are worth, I honestly not a clue.

Luke,  how much is the kit?

I upgraded from a fzs600 to a 54 plate thou in April this year.  I'm getting it invanised in September but feel the rear shock is a bit wallowy ,  especially for a larger 20st  chap. Might need a month or so to save up but really interested in the kit.

Title: Re: R6 shock Mod
Post by: Loz on 08 August 2013, 06:24:00 pm
All fitted, left original dog bones on in the end as the shorter ones left me on rip toes, dropped forks down a bit to compensate.

Seems to do what it says on the tin, more planted at the rear end, seems to hold a tighter line round the corners with no wallow stuff going on.  Will go out for longer at the weekend, but initially very impressed.

Thanks again Luke  :D

Hi from Sweden.

I´m interrested in a shock and some dogbones.
Just to be fancy I think the yellow spring would be nice on my black FZS.
What will it add up to, in order to get it to Sweden?

Hi, I've a couple of questions about this mod, , the R6 shock is a different length to the Fazer with different length dog bones to give the desired ride height. This effectively changes the spring rate so with this set up what is the spring rate in comparison to the Fazer spring? I'm about 17 stone so would i need a heavier spring in the R6 shock?
Thanks
Jim.

Tex and vipera shocks sent today

Hi Luke.
It arrived today. I got it from UPS on my way to work.
I could not resist to wait until I got home so I had to check it out.
This will be nice although the season is almost over here.
I will see if I have the time to get it fitted and tested before the season
is definitley over..
Thank you for your work.

Hi Luke, received kit last Friday, fitted it and have done a few hundred miles now. Just what was needed......front and rear suspension now works together Instead of against each other......bike holds a line and is generally much better. Cheers mate, money very well spent. Rory.

Hi,

Still finding me feet in here after just having got an FZ8.

This question has probably been asked a million times already (not trawling 16 pages to find out) but will the R6 shock fit the FZ8 without major modifications ?

I would ask in the FZ8 section but my question might get lost in amoungst the tumbleweeds..    :lol

thanks..

A job for xmas holidays now....  :)

Edit: Doh! Just spotted the spacers are stuck on the bush....

Another success story with the R6 shock upgrade. Fitted mine today.
Its light years ahead of the std shock (mine with heavier spring fitted), and like someone else on this site mentioned the rebound was all or nothing, mine was all and crashing over bumps having to put up with it so she wouldn't wallow around and want to run wide.
Bumps are now properly absorbed and the steering is far better. The bike fells lighter to ride, drops into corners more willingly and much more confidence inspiring.
Sent Monday courier attempted del Friday to OZ but no one home cause didn't expect it that quickly so redirected to work.
I'm not the best at wheelies but tried a couple of small clutch ups in 1st and the bikes front wheel comes up much easier  :lol - and not coming up to quickly or not at all, like it was before.

Thanks for the kit Devilsyam, clear photo instructions included made it a straight forward job.

Just to say a BIG thank you to Luke.
Can't believe how much difference this make to the ride of the bike.
Now much more confident in the wet.

I did a straight bank transfer to say a few pounds, which I was a bit worried about but needn't have.

His communications were excellent .

The top space washers had come unglued in the post, so a little of fiddling required to fit, and the paint needed to be cleaned from inside the holes on the dog bones, other than that a straight foward bolt on mod.

Should those nuts be loctited?

Many thanks

One Happy customer

R6 Shock all fitted as per the simply instructions and the difference on a brief ride this morning are amazing

the whole bike feels new and a very different ride from stock , the bike feels like its better connected to the road

no sagging at the rear and the bike turns in to a corner a lot better and inspires confidence whilst holding a line

All in all a bargain and a must do mod for the gen 1 fazer 1000  :D

Hi Luke,

Looking at the positive reviews on this mod I have to say I'm tempted. Will it affect the height of the bike at all? If anything I could do with raising the seat a little to help lessen the bend on my knackered left leg. If it was raised (I'm guessing longer dog bones?) would that affect the side stand significantly i.e. make it not lean over far enough to be stable on the stand?

Thanks,

Kenny

As there is no sag as with the old shock the r6 unit is firmer ride height is the same
Jacking up does give side stand issues

Just wanted to say a massive thank you to Luke  :)

Fitted the shock last week but only had chance to take bike for test ride this morning. Can't believe the difference, took one of my more favoured streches of road and the bike felt much more composed, firmer and reassuring which gave me more confidence in the bike.

Cheers Luke,

Craig

Does this conversion alter the height of the rear wheel from the ground when its put on the centre stand.
At this moment i have a std set up and is very easy to put on the stand and rear wheel is about 1" off the ground.
Just asking as talking to a couple of mates with fazers thought it may be harder to put on the stand, no big problem just asking.

Retains stock ride height so no change as explained in pm if you lower it then yes bit more effort required to get it up

I wouldn't be doing that personally mate - progressive springs make it very hard to get sag, and don't help sporty handling!

Was just curious that and the road up here on the west coast of Scotland ain't getting any smoother (either that or I'm just getting older... :lol) I still want the pin sharp handling but would like a little bit of comfort (I know it normally one or the other) but thought I'd ask.

Got this cracking reply this morning from James via email

Mate!

This is so cool.

I didn’t want to reply before I had a chance to really try it out. I am amazed at how much I had changed my style to accommodate the failing rear end of my bike.

Having fitted your shock, excellent instructions by the way, and ridden it for a few months I can honestly say that it has transformed my bike and my riding. I have been able to almost remove the ‘unridden’ rings on my rear tyre in spite of the wet cold weather. I have loads of confidence in the front end now that the back end is solid. You have set the shock up perfectly.

I appreciate you taking the time to chat with me about it and I apologise for being sceptical. Sometimes things ain’t too good to be true; they just are (true).

Thank you Luke. Keep up the good work. If you need any one to vouch for you call me!

Best regards
James

Was,nt as easy to fit as I thought, but the torque settings seemed very low but I stuck to them.
Ok i,ve taken the bike for a good 30 mile spin and I thought the standard shock was ok a bit bouncy but now the R6 conversion it,s sooo much better handles bumps better and has less squat under accerelation and reminds me I need new tyres a big thanks to Devilsyam for the doglegs and the gumption to make a non standard shock fit !! :lol

P.s Anyone got a front end setup guide now I have a big ass end !

I normally say return front to factory settings and lower the forks through the yokes 10mm
You need a start point as most fck about with the front in the vain attempt to compensate for poor rear
A good percentage of the folks I've delta with over the year are happy with this arrangement
You can take the front further by uprating the fork oil weight or taking it to k tech etc
Just my 2 pennies worth

Nice bit of feedback via email from craig
Hi Luke.
Wow, what a difference. Iv had the (sweet yellow) shock fitted for a couple of days now. It feels like a nippy little 600 now rather than the lumbering barge it was before.
More confidence in low speed manoeuvres, fast flowing corners and everything else. Very happy customer.
Oh and idiot proof concise instructions too. Nice one
Fully restored my faith in my abilities, which I was starting to lose

Did a search on the forum, l then google and I think I have found the info I need but wanted to confirm.

The stock dogbones are 140mm..?
The shorter custom dogbones from Luke are 135mm..?

Im asking because 'I think' when I put the R6 shock on ages ago, I must have put the stock bones by mistake. But this was almost a year ago and what prompted/reminded me is that the bike is running a wide'ish in corners (if I dont lean off the bike) and the front is getting light under heavy acceleration all the way upto 4th after a rolling start.

I cannot believe the difference it has made Luke. I was all for the front being the problem, but all the choppiness has just about gone. Think carbs could do with a balance which should sort the slight too and throw I feel. But ladies and gentleman it is worth every penny to the point where I was going to sell it but now Im keeping it.  :lol

Luke , I managed to get out on the old  cyckle over the weekend  the difference is chalk and cheese it no longer bucks and wallows around on fast sweeping bends which in turn has boosted my confidence no end , the standard one must have been really focced  ,Thanks for the advise over the phone and wish I had took the plunge to buy one earlier

Hi ther, does anyone know of a good setting for the rear shock for some 2 up riding. I'm off to Silverstone at the end of the month with a buddy. Probably a total weight of 28 stone all in.

Thanks in advance,  Mickey

Hi

I'd like to fit the R6 shock but also need to reduce the ride height a bit because Im a short arsed git. Is it possible to fit the R6 shock using some of those lowering dog bones off eBay?

Cheers

Another stunning feedback

Hi Luke fitted the shock upgrade today took bike out for a quick run feels like a different machine, weaves and dodges manhole covers with ease and total stability, comes out of corners with great accuracy, a lot more planted, not tried it 2 up yet but should handle great, I can't thank you enough for the great service and that wonderful idiots guide, luckily I won't have to have my spanners taken off me,
Thanks again

I bought and fitted one of the r6 shock mod kits off Luke last year and I'm still amazed at the difference it made to the fazer. I do have a couple of questions for Luke.

Do you do stainless steel dogbones for the kit, as I'd like to change from the powder coated black ones. If so how much would they be?
And I'm looking at buying one of the R&G Shocktube protectors to keep the shock nice and clean, roughly what year r6 do the shocks come from? Am I right in thinking around 2006?

Ok guys
I had the R6 shock from devilsyam(Luke Gibson) sitting on my shelf for a few months just never had time to fit ,lazy I know as it comes with foolproof fitting instructions !
I had it fitted today while the bike was in getting other bits n bobs done
Ok took my normal ride route home from central London to Essex
OMG I have a new bike
1st , first  chance of really testing it out is over Londons speed bumps ,it totally eliminates the bounce
2nd real test on quite a long gets tighter in the bend right hander ,normally with the stock shock I have to shut down a bit or risk running wide ! Not with the new shock I could actually wind the throttle in and could shift position in the bend
3rd is a bump on the A12 that I slow down for with the standard shock as the bike would normally bounce a bit and as its on a bend could get a bit uneven
R6 shock immediately corrected the bike
4th no more squat when you power in
5th bikes front end feels far more responsive (I have Hagon springs fitted)
6th I felt far more part of the bike and connected to the road
All done on patchy wet roads
Can't wait for the dry weather to really put the bike through its paces
IT IS A MUST FOR THE FZS 1000
Take a bow Mr. Gibson awesome mod thank you
I have a new bike

Craig I used to do stainless bones but the cost became stupid so dropped them in favour of powder coated ones
2008 on for shock tube

I have red in stock brand new 0 miles

Fit mine tonight and went a wee 70 mile jaunt to see how it feels. Instant improvement!

Fitting was a doddle (once I had removed some excess powdercoat from the holes in the dog bones to fit the bolts in nicer).

Even just sitting on the bike whilst it's stationary is night and day. Wish I had bought this two years ago :wall

Mental upgrade - takes less than an hour and you then realize it's the best £££ you will spend for this bike, including Full Monty. Planted, grounded, confidence in cornering/turning and even shifting your weight a slight bit, the bike just feels 100x better. Going from 0-100 is quicker, or so it feels, the back end doesn't sag. Nice one Luke.

Fazerjon
I did the R6 shock mod yesterday
« on: 15 April 2016, 07:50:00 AM »
Quote
Thanks to Luke for his advice and supplying the shock and dog bones. Fitted the shock yesterday, took about half an hour, when I told the wife what I was going to do she thought I'd be in the garage for hours! I set the front forks to standard settings then dropped the yokes down 10mm as per Luke's recommend settings. Well that has definitely changed the way the bike handles, noticeable straight away from accelerating, there's no sag or squatting so it feels great coming out of corners. I may just need a small tweak on the rear compression damping as I did get a bit of bounce as I was accelerating hard down a fairly uneven country lane, but other than that the bike is where I want it to be. A mod well worth doing, you can really get hold of the bike and throw it around much more easily than before, it feels lighter and more nimble in my opinion. Ivan's kit being fitted by Mike at the end of the month, what more could you want from a bike? :)

Is it possible to use a 25mm jack up kit once the R6 shock is fitted, or do you have to return to stock height if taking the R6 option.
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod fazer 1000
Post by: red98 on 16 April 2016, 12:23:08 pm
Devilsyam will know for sure, if I remember correctly the standard dogbones with R6 shock will raise the standard seat height by approx 25mm.....that was too high for me so I purchased dogbones from devilsyam to put it back to standard height with the R6 shock fitted....
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod fazer 1000
Post by: devilsyam on 16 April 2016, 12:57:35 pm
My bones return to stock ride height OE bones with r6 shock lower the rear 15mm
I don't recommend jack up with r6 as this just takes it out of the "best performance " but bare in mind most will back me up that the bum feel is taller as it does not sag like an old sofa as with stock shock

Thanks for your replies lads. My concern was that as I want to use a hugger with an after market undertray, which the makers can't assure me that they can be used together, I'm currently running with a 25mm lift, to improve the handling on the cheap, but also to ensure the two plastic items don't come in contact with each other. Thanks again, all food for thought.

The bike now feels much better it actually lifts the front on acceleration now rather than squats and squirms like it used to and feels a lot more planted on the road.
Thanks very much all the best John

Well it's a revelation , eventually got out for a decent run. Feels like a new bike, tracks so much better ,is more nimble and seems lighter. Why didn't Yamaha make it like that in the first place? The mirror covers look good as well, much less buffeting without oe mirrors. Thanks Luke, it's not often people deliver what they promise, this just works. Cheers

Ordered an R6 2015 shock for diy fit.

I'm going to use a top hat reducing spacer for top mount.

Does anyone know the sizes I will need so I can get them made before strip down

From what I have read Dia are 12mm into casting on frame and 10mm bolt hole for new shock

I need to know how wide frame casting is and the gap size created by new shock.

Wot a hoot, I rode in to work this morning, damp/wet roads, dark and miserable at 0530hrs ...... and the Fazer sticks to the road like poo to glue

Fooking awesome handling...how I wished I had done the same on my first Fazer that I owned.... I can't stop grinning  :D :evil

Thank you Luke Gibson, R6 shock fitted & has totally transformed the bike.
Absolutely amazing the way it feels, so planted & secure in the bends, no longer bouncing like a 200kg pogo stick!!
Now just have to upgrade the front fork springs & think it'll feel better than a brand new bike! 👍

yep the bmw shock is a good mod also not quite out the box but still a good option

the stock shock isnt about failure more over its inability to perform correctly - there are other on here who can give you the low down on the bmw conversion and i thing someone was doing the bushes all i ask is you relocate to your own thread as id like to keep this r6 based

the above silver is heading to Ireland so i have two reds in stock

What's a typical sort of mileage you can expect to get out of one of these things (average sort of weight rider)? Mine's on about 27k now, and just starting to get a suspicion it's not at its best.

well thats 3 times the time a stock will last lol ive had them go to 50k nick but they will eventually need overhauling
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod fazer 1000
Post by: Hedgetrimmer on 02 April 2017, 07:28:48 pm
Not complaining Luke, I wouldn't expect one to last forever, and I agree it has lasted in effective condition much longer than the standard crappy item would. It's just I've noticed the rear end isn't handling quick direction changes so well lately - feels like it needs a moment to settle. Or at least, I think so. I need to check it out a bit further yet, it might be just me. I was chasing (trying to) a Ducati 1299 on a fast winding A road the other day, so it may be I was just pushing harder than usual  :lol

But I was curious anyway - if it made it to 50k, I'd be very impressed.

Hi Devilsyam,
I have the r6 shock mod but have also just had ktec springs matched to my weight and 10w oil as recommended by ktec fitted. Forks are 10mm through yolks. I am 14 stone in kit. The bike is running on Dunlop Roadsmart 3's tyre pressures front 35 and rear 39. Since fitting the forks the bike has developed a high speed weave. This is during hard acceleration above 9k and towards the silly end of the speedo! Below that in general use or short shifting its fine.Any suggestions on the fork and rear suspension set up please? Sag seems correct. All usual suspect bearings have been checked and fine. Cheers
Title: Re: R6 shock Mod fazer 1000
Post by: devilsyam on 08 June 2017, 07:56:56 pm
as this has happened after fork fit id be inclined to check front setting look for for sticksion make sure both legs have same setting
go back to factory settings as yo need a base point to work from

sticksion is when the fork are clamped either resting on the deck or if yokes tightened oddly

the way to remove it is lift front end remove wheel undo clamps so legs are relaxed

nip uo lower yoke first just enough to hold the leg

now tighten top yoke bit at a time left then right till both are torqued

now undo the lower yoke till bolts are loose this allows any tension out again clamp either side bit by bit till torqued

assuming all bearings are good and your happy go try it

also ive come across alot of fazers in my time were the front wheel is over tightened so check torque on this to

let me know how you get on

So today I put the front forks back to recommended settings as per the fazer manual despite the ktec springs and thicker oil. I also put forks back to flush with yolks. I did as you suggested with the loosening of bolts, bouncing front and tightening. It made no difference. Hard acceleration around 110mph (closed road!) speed weave. Forks thru 10mm...standard settings...same. Forks thru 13mm! Same! Rear preload up to one off max. Same! Front rebound dialled back to absolute minimum and all as before...the bike is on its nose. Same though maybe not quite as violent. Really stumped! I am thinking of taking the forks back to the mechanic who fitted the springs and oil...summats up!

Post by: Covertlaugh on 09 June 2017, 06:19:14 pm
I got the shock elsewhere, the dog bones and the set up from you. The shock has been refreshed by reactive suspension and was working sweetly prior to the front getting ktec springs and oil. It's the right shock, I checked with you via email prior to fitting. The only reason I have raised the preload was to try another option while attempting to sort out this speed weave.

I have gone through all the bearings again. I think the swing arm bearings have some side to side play. It wasn't noticeable before but after spending half the day trying to identify the problem with some high speed runs I am convinced it has play in it.

So - the plunge taken and a red one ordered. Arrived quickly (well it would, wouldn't it?)
Fitting took approx 15 minutes, thanks to the carefully written instructions (however I had to swap the prepared 17mm spanners for 19mm and back again at the bottom of page one  :lol :lol :lol )
Didn't fancy skinning my knuckles undoing the top bolt with a spanner, so I removed the r/h side panel and used a 14mm socket, U/J and a 6" extension, which may have been quicker.
Went for a brief spin on Saturday - what can I say. I think all of the 29 previous pages say it all (well most of them do). Back end felt more planted, with very little (if any squat) under acceleration. I am looking forward to getting some more miles done this week to assess where, if any, any further tweaks need to be made.
Well done Luke, an excellent mod, well thought out and easily applied for the non-spanner twirlers amongst us.  :thumbup

Now had a few rides on mine (had to get it fitted by a motorcycle mechanic friend as after 13 years the old one was a little reluctant to let go  :D )

What can I say that hasn't already been said? The bike is so planted now, dips in the road no longer feel like they're going to knock your spine out of line and it goes where I point it and doesn't run wide anymore.

It's totally transformed the bike and I'm back in love with it again. I'm totally sure that this year the mileage will be significantly better than it has been for the last 2 or 3 years.

Nice feedback
we fitted the shock mod  supplied DevilsYam (https://www.facebook.com/images/emoji.php/v9/ta5/1.5/16/1f642.png):-)  thanks Luke (https://www.facebook.com/images/emoji.php/v9/ta5/1.5/16/1f642.png):-) . Me and the wife travelled from Florence to Sicily, round mount Etna and back to Florence.
It is  far better than the standard shock . And also did not need adjusting after I supplied  Luke with my specifications ( weight (https://www.facebook.com/images/emoji.php/v9/ta5/1.5/16/1f642.png):-) ) .

Hey guys,

I have a shock (Red) + Dog bones that Devilsyam sold me beginning of last year, still not fitted and now looking at selling my FZS1000.

Therefore I am looking to shift it on - I paid 295 for it, happy to take £245 - Anyone interested? will send next day insured.

Jules.

Copied from the FZ1OA, a lovely tribute from Mike ( Falcon )

I first met Luke back in 2003 when he brought his Fazer Thou to me to have Ivan's slip-on kit fitted. His was probably the third or fourth installation I did. Back then he was a big guy, if you get my drift. Suffice to say that the stock rear shock wasn't up to Luke's specifications.

He lived just the other side of town from me and the next time I saw him, he'd installed a nitrous kit on the bike and had it over-bored to 1060cc. Figure 170bhp at the rear wheel when he hit the gas button. Still on stock suspension. Fair to say that Luke wasn't too fussed about dragging pegs but liked straightline 'go'.

We saw each other on and off numerous times in the following years, even though I'd moved to Spain in 2004. Every Gen 1 he bought - and there were many - he got me to 'Ivanize' for him, even though his spannering skills were superior to mine. I spent many days working out of his little lock-up garage in Bristol, a swarf-strewn, oily rag filled place, with old carpets on the floor and boxes of bits on every surface. Those bits included all the genius ideas he had for improving or just blinging up the mighty Thou.

Dogged with health issues for all the time I knew him, I never once heard him complain. He just took what life threw at him and looked to make it better, for himself and for his family. His love for Sue and his kids was clear to see, as strong as his love for life.

There was no such thing as 'can't be done' in Luke's mindset. Got a health problem? Deal with it. Want a holiday in the USA? Make it happen. Feel like fitting a single-side swingarm to Fazer Thou? Get 'er done! We've all seen the amazing things he did with his bikes, and not just the Fazers. He just loved taking something and making it better. Better looking, better performing, better to own. He was proud of his creations but very modest about his achievements.

His local motorcycle main dealership almost banned him from their sales floor because he was forever there measuring up suspension units and trying to figure out which shock or whatever could be grafted on to his latest project. The R6 shock mod which hundreds of us now enjoy came about from Luke scrabbling around underneath pretty much every mark of sportsbike that Fowlers had in stock.

I could go on recalling the feats of this great guy and those who were lucky enough to know him will have similar stories to tell. Our lives are richer for having known him. There's a permanent parking place in my memory for Luke and his machines.

Speed on the straights, mate, easy on the curves. Smooth tarmac and warm rides from here on in.

Mike

Maybe mods can move the tribute messages onto a a more appropriate heading as I know he'd like that.
