Thanks for that Solorider. I can stop thinking about it now.

bludclot, it's a nightmare. Whatever you do, someone always tops it, eh? The first few Range Rovers had everyone raving about high driving positions, now ever second car has a high driving position. As you say, with cars starting to light up more and more during the day, it is harder to stand out.

Personally, I switch the lights on and off depending on what the day is like. On country roads where there's a lot of dappled light coming through the trees, I think it's easier to see other bikes when their lights are off, I use full beam when lane splitting on motorways and suchlike.

I guess you just can't take being seen for granted. I've made eye contact with cars at T junctions and had them pull out. What are you going to do?

After eight years of ownership, I've only just started monitoring the fuel consumption on my Fazer and I've been quite surprised at how good it is. There's been the odd track day when it's done a tank in 80 miles, but also the odd long distance jaunt on the continent when I've seen over 200 miles on a tank, but even on my commute it's been getting over 46 to the gallon, and that's whanging it around, revving the nuts off it as well as 30 miles of motorway. Is there no end to the surprises this amazing bike keeps giving us?

I really need to buy another and keep it under a sheet for when mine finally gives up the ghost.

Dunno. There's a few bods on the ZX14R forum who've fitted HID kits to their machines. I haven't done it myself, but a lot of them seem very happy with the results

£25 quid and a couple of bulbs seems very good value. The only problem I see is that the Fazer's main problem is fork dive when riding in the dark. I've been wondering if fitting lights lower on the chassis might be an idea, perhaps on the frame rails, as they'd be affected less mounted there. Certainly, my ZZR is a million miles quicker in the dark than my Fazer simply because there's much less fork dive on the brakes.

DON'T PANIC!

Ok, worst case scenario goes like this. Second gear, give it a handful, hit a bump, huge clattering sound from the gearbox. No drive in second.

That's what happened to me at 45000. I had the bike trailered back home, whipped the engine out and took the sump pan off. Second gear was missing a number of teeth. Now, about 10,000 miles earlier, I'd missed a gear on a track day and when it went back in, it made the most almighty bang and I'd always wondered what that did to the box. Turns out, it was probably knocking seven colours out of second gear. Having said that, it was always slipping out of second, and from what I hear Yamaha R1 gearboxes are also prone to this as well. Known problem.

I'll bet this isn't what you want hear .. . .

Anyway, stripping the whole thing down and replacing that one gear was way more expensive that getting a second hand engine unit, so that's what I did. Took a couple of days to swap the two units, but this replacement has never slipped out of gear and I'm up at 91,000 miles now. I see on eBay tonight, there's one for £330. Way cheaper than getting dealer to strip the engine.

I hope it's not as serious as this. I really do, but if it is, don't panic, it can be rectified.

I'll bet you're not running the standard can, mine goes down a degree or so after the footpegs and levers the back wheel off the ground (not recommended coming out of Clearways at Brands!)

Yeah, it's there's definitely something HR Geiger about that screen shape. Although, I don't remember Alien having Austin Princess Van den Plas running around the place. Wot is with that faux radiator grill on the front? Hideous.

I don't think that Goldwing's fairing is tall enough. How's about this. I measured the Fazer up, I reckon I could make it fit ..

+1 for the advice on getting the slack right on the Exup cables. My valve also had a slight lip after many miles of use which I took down with a file, but it was still slightly sticky. I though the end plate might be bent, but I loosened the cables a little and bingo, no error codes.

God, I love this forum.

I rebuilt the callipers last year and the genuine seals were 100 quid odd. Nearly shat mesen at the price. Makes me feel better having spent all that, sorry to say.

Bypass the Yamaha touring screen and go directly to the Givi if you're 5'11". I'm a wide 6'1" and the touring was ok for a bit, but the Givi is much more protective. It's a good bit wider than the Yamaha touring so it seems to smooth the airflow as well as being more protective.

Nope, but you'll be pleased to know that you don't have to take the swing arm out to replace it, as the Yamaha people will tell you! Does that help? Probably not. I think they were about 20 odd quid when I had to replace mine.

Hmm. The Datatool user guide suggests that it draws less than 2.5 milli Amps and the battery is 12 Amp hours so to flatten a healthy battery it should take months. Thing is, I have other bikes which I ride during winter and it's the cold weather that knocks seven colours out of batteries which is why I keep killing them. Two weeks and it needs charging. Three and it'll really be on the way out. I suspect in summer, it'd take a lot longer to drain a battery, though.

With Datatools, there is a service mode which allows you to disconnect the battery, but I can't see anything in the manual which says whether it's a good idea to leave it in service mode for weeks, and of course it ain't doing the job of protecting your bike in service mode. Datatool say that their alarms should only be used with Optimates for trickle charge, but who knows.

+2 for that. A fortnight and it starts to get a bit unhappy. Datatool Evo. Lovely bike though. Clean as a whistle.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: performance?
« on: 19 May 2012, 12:04:17 pm »
I took mine up to Santa Pod a few years ago and my best run was 11.3 @ 124 in the quarter mile. I was trying to beat my ZX9R that I'd had the previous year which ran a 11.2. Didn't quite manage it.

That was BI (before Ivanising) hence a standard machine. I think the worst I ran was an 11.6 but most runs were 11.4 @ 123. Very consistent performer. If memory serves, it was 6 secs ish @100 for the 1/8th mile, so 0-100 in 6.

Foc in hell. What a machine. A couple of years ago I wondered why Nick Sanders didn't use a Fazer with knobblies for his round the world trips, now I'm wondering why Yamaha bothered with the Super Ten. Can you imagine hauling that round a motocross track?

A Rocket III? Now that's a radical departure from a Fazer.  I bet it's a riot to ride. You've got to have a test ride at least!

I have to say, there's only two problems with my Fazer - it isn't as planted and stable as more recent bikes (even with Ohlins suspension) and mine's plain old. I did look at a couple of very nice low mileage FZSs this year, but it just seemed a bit retrograde to buy another, and the used prices this year seem to be higher than last year so there was less chance of a cheeky no brainer purchase.

You're right as usual Pitternator, it is about feel, but the ZZR does move the game on for me. Compared to the Fazer, it feels taught, stable, smooth and well . . . modern.

I finally took the plunge and bought a ZZR today and it has to be said, I did wonder what I've done when I lit up the rear tyre in the wet for the fourth time on the way back from the dealer, and I wasn't anywhere near full throttle.

Where can I use it, well, you know bikes, anywhere and nowhere, but buying bikes is more about usability, feel and experience for me too. The FZ1 doesn't have the right qualities compared to the FZS. The big Kwak, I think does. You want torque? Character? It's ossum, as the Americans would say. Only the Multistrada came close, and right now I don't have the money for one of those.

I didn't buy it just for the speed, although it certainly is a hoot from that point of view, but because until I find a next generation Fazer-like machine with the right qualities, for me it's the next best thing out there, and I like sports tourers. It's riding position is actually quite VFR, for instance. Having looked for a replacement for the FZS for the last couple of years and tried many many bikes, it's the only one that's really appealed.

Anyway, my Fazer is now too old for breakdown insurance on the continent and it's way past 90,000 miles old, so I had to get something for the big trip this year... and, as it happens, 5k can buy an early ZZR with 10,000 on the clock which is within a few hundred quid of what you'd pay for a decent FZ1 Fazer with the same miles, so what the heck. And the insurance is only an extra hundred quid a year. And I've still got the Fazer.

Hmm.

If I sound like someone trying to justify a purchase to himself, you'd be right. I have some very mixed feelings about it. I think I need some Foccer Forum therapy. Oh well, at worst, it's going to be a hell of a stop gap until the next bike!

I had a test ride on the V4 Tuono recently and it's a cracking bike. Tank range and fairing were the problems for me, too little of both. And although it was quick, it's not the massive leap over an Ivanazer (see what I did there :-) that the figures suggest, so I think I'm going ZZR1400. Now that's a leap over the Fazer. Jeezuz.

Although it has to be said, the phenomenal roadholding of the Tuono may have masked the speed a bit, and I'm quite sure it would lose a Fazer very quickly in the twisties. I begged the Aprilia bloke for one with a bigger tank and a higher screen, and what have they done - given the Dorsoduro a makeover and called it a Caponord. No, Aprilia, use the V4 . . . grr.

But 80 to the tank? That wouldn't even get me to work and back once . . .

Agree with everything said so far. As a road bike, it's without peer.

I'm halfway to buying a ZZR1400 at the moment (too much is never enough) but I can't help come back to the fact that the Fazer is the most practical bike for 95% of the riding I do. Which is why I've had the same bike for the last 8 years. Damnit, why didn't Yamaha just update the handling of the Gen 1 rather than botch the job with a titchy tank, rock hard seat and uninspiring engine. Roll on the Crossplane Fazer.

In the meantime, I rather suspect it's ZZR1400 and bar risers for me. And no, I'm not selling the Fazer, just in case.

Devlisyam is an inveterate tinkerer, modifier and researcher. He has done things to Fazer 1000s none of us has had the foresight, guts or nous to do, and many of us and our bikes have benefitted hugely from his curiosity. He leads us to new and exciting places and we'd all be stuck in a cave eating gravel if it wasn't for people like him. Why do it? Because pushing boundaries is interesting and you learn.

« on: 21 February 2012, 09:04:20 pm »
That's why I like them too. Stealth bike! Especially when some snotty twunt on a Ducati at a track day bumbles up to me and says 'I wouldn't dare go out on that' (pointing to my 60,000 mile old Fazer). Cheeky get. He sharp changed his mind when I went out in the fast group and lapped half of them. And he was only in the medium . . Revenge is sweet etc.

Having said all of that, it has been around a long time and styling's moved on - most bikes are much more angular these days - so I can see why it was said. So, since there's no new Fazer on the cards, I think it's stupid fast Kawasaki next. ZZR1400, I think, with bar risers! But I'll never sell the old man's bike.
