Question about silencers
« on: 11 September 2023, 03:21:05 am »
Hello, I want to ask if I use a silencer and want to know if it can pass and is legal when participating in traffic, is there any information I need? I don't want to buy it and not be able to use it legally on the road. Thank.

Depends on the silencer. Many are road legal, some are not.
Another ex-Fazer rider that is a foccer again

Usually non road legal silencers will be stamped with words such as 'not for road use'

This is a subjective subject to a large extent.  Back in the day there was cans stamped as mentioned this can/does still happen, that said many newer (last 15yrs or so) have removal baffles, i.e. when the baffle/s is removed it's not road compliant.  What still further complicates matters is the final say it down to the MOT tester ears :rolleyes .

A basic rule of thumb if it sounds too loud to you, chances are its tooooooo loud ;)

My Moto GP can that I have on at the moment is sold as road legal, has the proper markings too, but is loud with the baffle in, and stupidly loud with the baffle out.

Got an MOT advisory once but he hadn't seen the markings.
I've saved the website page on my phone now in case anyone questions it.

I've tried it without the baffle before but suddenly became "that" person that everyone looks round at as you approach them. Way too much attention for my liking, plus the noise can get a bit tedious too.
