Previously bought in bulk , I  wont be able to use in 3 lifetimes of bike maintenance!  Have repackaged surplus in 20gm tins-very handy when servicing/overhauling your brakes.
For anyone new to this, the red rubber grease is used SPARINGLY on the brake piston/rubber seal interface.

So a  20gm tin will go a long way.
Not looking to make a profit here-look at prices on ebay! Just to cover cost of post, tin, jiffy bag.
One tin of either = £2
2 tins                    £3

Does anyone have experience of this type of insurance? Is it worth having or just more commission for the dealer?
The supplying dealer for my MT-07 is offering 3 years cover for £199.
Just did a check on "Honest Johns" website and the cheapest they came up with was £180 for 3 years.

« on: 16 January 2015, 07:23:06 am »
Had some spare time on Wednesday & popped in to my local Yamaha dealer. They are in the process of moving premises and had moved the bikes around. There was an MT07ABS that caught my eye. Spoke to one of the sales guys who I have known a long time and  apparently these retail at £5845 compared with the non-ABS which had a list price of £5295 (Both prices OTR). He said that all the new stock will be ABS models-something to do with impending new legislation e=requiring all new bikes over 125cc being fitted with ABS brakes from 2016.
Having never owned a bike with ABS I dont particularly want to pay an extra £550 for the privelege.
Now I like the looks/spec of the 7 (& had already mentally budgeted for a better rear shock for £500).
The problem being I dont want to sell my Fazer, having spent time & money making it the way I like it & it is such a good all-rounder that I never want to part with it until I am too decrepit to ride any more.
So.... If  I buy an MT07-it would be as a second bike for weekend fun etc.
I guess I would have to be very lucky to find an unsold brand new non-ABS example so I would have to justify a possible outlay of £6345 (inc rear shock).
Am going to have test ride on their demonstrator once they move into new premises next week.

General / Another "new" road in Wales
« on: 12 October 2014, 04:05:30 pm »
Was up in Aberystwyth yesterday, then staying at Corris overnight.
This morning took first turn off Machynlleth to Newtown road at end of main high street signposted Llanidloes through Forge & up over Cambrian mountains to rejoin the B4518 just past Dylife and then down to Llanidloes.
Ashamed to say wasnt on bike but stopped to admire scenery -heres a couple of pics. A few riders were using it emerging from the mist at lower levels to bright sunshine/blue skies higher up. Highly recommended!

Did anyone manage to watch the TV prog shown Monday night on BBC NI about the Dunlop boys?
Managed to catch it on BBC iplayer last eve and was very impressed with the documentary narrated by Liam Neeson.
It captured the highs & lows of this amazing racing family-and proved to me that these guys are a separate species compared to mere riders like me!

After vile Bank Holiday Monday weather made a decision on Tues to revisit lake Vrynwy then take the mountain road to Bala.
Booked in at delightful working farm B&B a few miles north of Bala where I discovered fellow "foccer" Rustyznuttz was also staying. It was great to meet & have a chat with him & his partner. My fellow rider,Amanda, has just qualified as an RMN & we decided to make the trip before she starts her new NHS career. She is currently on a Yamaha YBR 125(L plates) but hopes to do her test next year & is a potential Fazer rider!
Thursday dawned bright but by the time we hit the A494 alongside the lake the rain clouds had  gathered and we had a few very wet miles but as we approached  Dolgellau the sun was shining and thats how the day remained. From there we took the A470 route back to Newtown then did the A483 to Crossgates.
After a break at the caff it was time to ride back across to Leominster, Tenbury Wells, Bewdley, Droitwich and home. 294 miles and not an ache or pain. :lol

My pal Kevin started riding in the 80s but never got round to taking his test. He bought & restored a Honda CG125 & last Wednesday passed his Direct Access at the grand old age of 52!
He was muttering about Suzuki B*****s the other day but I shall be "persuading" him to buy a proper bike that doesnt weigh half a ton! :lol

Can anyone recommend a brand/supplier for the FZS 600 ? I see plenty listed for FZS 1000.  Ideally the longer length pattern. Finding it a bit of a stretch on the standard clutch! Thanks

« on: 22 April 2014, 10:14:37 pm »
Having read threads like noggys recent "War & Peace" & all the Gen 1 v Gen 2 type features got me thinking....what started the obsession for want of a better word?
First saw a Gen 1 thou in a showroom in 2002-everything about it looked right except the price back then.
Guy I worked with passed his test & bought a new 52 plate silver Foxeye-loved the looks, size ,felt right sitting on it and not too expensive.
Ran a couple of H****s til switched allegiance to the triple tuning forks in 2004 -have owned 2004 FZ6(not for long though-didn't gel),2002 FZS 1000 (2 years-loved it!) & 2 FZS 600 Foxeyes.  In a nutshell - the present 600 is likely to be the last bike I will buy simply because it does everything I want & makes me feel good! :lol

General / Boots-Recommendations?
« on: 06 March 2014, 11:47:25 am »
I need to replace my old boots & wondered what other foccers recommend. Im not interested in "flashy" fashion items just want something waterproof, comfortable, durable and with sufficient "feel" for the pedals combined with ankle protection.  Took a walk round my local JT store and was overwhelmed by the range of styles, priceranges, designs. So over to you guys......

Rhondda Red has been out this morning to get her motor spinning & a few miles under her tyres. A beautiful sunny ride & a lovely feeling as the tacho needle climbed north of 6000 rpm! Called at local dealers & saw a few guys picking up brand new "14" plate bikes but Im sticking with my beautiful Fazer! :lol

After endless wet or grey miserable days yesterday was amazing-woke to blue skies, sunshine & no frost! Have spent far too much time indoors since Xmas on a diet of mind-numbing TV, depressing news in media etc. So on with the gear & out with "Rhondda Red". Within a mile or so I was smiling to myself and after a while was singing away listening to the soundtrack of 4 cylinders getting busy! Celebrated another birthday earlier in the week but yesterdays ride was the best present possible-biking works wonders for your mental well-being :lol  Didn't once think about the state of the nation as was entirely concentrating on the state of the roads(no shortage of water damage to roads-potholes etc). Cagers still the no 1 hazard though! :eek

General / Test Ride Insurance Excesses!
« on: 20 October 2013, 12:27:07 pm »
Reading the MT09 thread got me thinking :eek  When I test rode the (then) new Pan European 1300 the excess was £1000-made me bloody careful!
Had a loan bike from my local Yamaha main dealer for two days back in the summer (XJ6 naked) while my alarm system was being sorted on "Rhondda red"-I always read the small print even though its getting smaller as I get older & noticed I was again signing to agree to be responsible for first £1000 of any damage.
Have test ridden a fair few cars over the years and this has never even been mentioned-probably because the salesman always rides shotgun?
I guess its to discourage hooligan behaviour so I guess its never going to be enough to explore the limits but more to determine riding position comfort & whether theyre telling the truth about torque/acceleration through the gears all the time remembering the engine is still going to be tight for the first thousand miles or so.
Anyway I am more than happy with my FZS 600 & haven't got £7k to spare, so haven't asked for a test ride (YET).

General / Farewell "Baby Blue"- "Rhondda red reigns supreme!
« on: 07 October 2013, 09:17:56 pm »
Well I couldn't justify 2 Foxeye Fazers so the blue job has gone to a very nice man over towards Clee Hill/Ludlow way. I spent more on her than I intended in my brief (6 months) ownership & only did 1000 miles. However "Rhondda Red" has been all over the place this summer-twice into Wales-Brecons, Carmarthen way and back via Beulah,  Landrindod Wells,  Also to Lake Vrynwy (July heatwave) and Silverstone. Will be riding as late into autumn as weather allows then it will be time for the winter service regime in a nice warm kitchen. :lol Don't like the sound of this weeks forecast much but then they don't always get it right do they? :rolleyes

FZS600 Fazer / A "F***IT" moment!
« on: 07 September 2013, 09:16:26 am »
Am the proud owner of two "03" plate Foxeye 600s: Baby Blue came along in April followed by Rhondda Red in June when I swapped my FZS Thou Big Red,due to advancing age & diminishing stamina.
Now the blue one was a one previous owner bike showing 34000miles. Unfortunately it must have been ridden all year round with no attempt to clean/protect front of engine from road spray/salt etc. Have done all the jobs in the service/maintenance schedule then discovered collector box was corroded to the extent where it wouldn't pass another MOT next April. Decided to take the Bull by the Horns and purchased a set of stainless downpipes/collector box direct from Motad local to me in Walsall @ cost of £145 collected. Removed radiator to discover it was held together more by luck than metal & fan was "f****d. Never mind-sourced new rad on ebay & good second hand fan motor assy from D&K. Also collector box outlet   to silencer gasket-also ebay.
Spent ages chiselling off remains of 6 exhaust header nuts to avoid damaging/breaking studs. (the end two were intact & undid). My local friendly engineer made up 8 beautiful nuts in brass. Yesterday put everything back together BUT when doing the final tightening managed to snap one stud!!!! :'( . Was so pissed off I didnt even swear but decided to sleep on it.. Am going to attempt to drill out the remains without removing cylinder head-its the nearside(LHS) one on number 3 cylinder. Anyone done this successfully?
On a brighter note have made the most of the wonderful summer weather on Rhondda Red  with trips to my beloved Wales & a great ride to Silverstone last Sunday-what a brilliant day that was with some great roads there & back.

General / Farewell "Big Red" Welcome "Rhondda Red"!
« on: 16 June 2013, 07:24:50 pm »
Had recently decided to downsize and bought an FZS 600 in April  as a possible replacement for my 52 plate 5LV1 Gen 1 thou. The 600 is a one previous owner bike but with 34000 miles up-mostly I would guess commuting in the southeast. Started to service bike from scratch as very little previous history-mainly a bunch of old MOTs indicating average annual mileage. Replaced brake lines with Goodridge ,  had gear pedal assembly rebushed & have had centre stand repaired.New front BTO23 tyre fitted & all the service jobs done, fluids & oil filter changed.
Studying sale/asking prices for early Gen 1s was dismayed to see how they have fallen in value/price fetched both here on forum & also ebay etc.
Last week I spoke to a Welsh 03 600 owner with an immaculate bike looking for a good Gen 1 thou. We exchanged pics/details & I rode down to meet him on Wednesday. We both liked what we saw, shook hands & swapped bikes ( so we both have bikes that any dealer would retail for a minimum of £2500).
Had a great ride home(having phoned insurance co first to cover new bike) apart from torrential rain between Hereford & Worcester.Having ridden the new (RED)600 its as good as it looks-the previous owner is an engineer and a bit OCD about bikes-like me!.
So I avoided all the hassle of advertising, daft offers, timewasters etc...........However I will be selling the Blue 03 600-which is a nice bike but the Red one is even better---oh Happy Grandad! :lol
