Its a bit of a long shot, but I can always dream, and it doesnt hurt to spread the advertising! Someone may have use for it!

Having decided I cant be bothered with the hassle of nakeding the Fazer Ive gone and bought a Bandit 1200S instead. Please forgive me.  :'(  Perhaps someone here can make my Fazer live on!

FZS600 Fazer / looking for a suitable single headlight HID
« on: 02 April 2017, 01:59:48 pm »
Whilst Im still sat around unable to ride, I may as well start putting my time to productive use and start thinking about how Im putting the Fazer back on the road.

The front fairing is smashed to bits. And lets face it the standard lights on the boxeye are crap anyway. Silver lining to every cloud and all that, its a blank canvas for upgrading. Im going to naked it and put a single headlight on it. But I want something that gives a decent amount of light compared to the stock lights, and will pass an MOT.

Theres so many different types of "universal" headlight out there, and they all look like bargain basement Chinese ebay jobbies that will undoubtedly either not work, suck, or fail an MOT.

Instead of "universal" should I be looking at a particular bike that does naked headlights well? I do like the look of an FZ6n single headlight, but dont know if I want to spend £150+ on one.

Ideally Id quite like to do an HID or LED upgrade too because I love how they look, but I know next to nothing about HID, the regulations regarding aftermarket ones and MOTs etc, I know Ill need to get some sort of projector for it to pass an MOT(?), but dont know what I need and what will fit. There seems to be plenty of LED/HID headlight units out there already but they all look crap, aimed at Harley riders or Chinese junk that will fall apart/catch fire.

So has anyone got any recommendations for a suitable headlight that fits what I need? Or a list of what I'll need to make an HID/LED work?  Preferably round, or similar, I dont like the look of square/rectangle headlights.

FZS600 Fazer / My Fazer is incontinent :(
« on: 18 March 2017, 11:38:31 pm »
For the past few days shes been drip, drip, dripping oil in a bad way.

From what I can tell, its coming from the oil sump gasket, it appears to be leaking from/around the front-most left side allen bolt that holds the sump in place (looking from the rear of the bike). I assumed because its nearly 13 years old and just done 35k on the original gasket thats not bad going and its due replacing. So I spent this afternoon fixing it. Changed the gasket for a new one, cleaned everything up nicely, put it all back together and did a full oil change...

And its still bloody leaking  :wall

So its not the gasket... its a not sump loose everything is torqued correctly, I cant find any obvious damage or reason for why its still leaking?! What am I missing? I cant see any possible place it could be leaking from, its all tightly sealed up.

FZS600 Fazer / Am I going to melt my engine?
« on: 08 December 2016, 08:02:55 pm »
So because Im fed up of my stock exhaust, and it has a massive dirty great big dent in it, I bought this: http://www.pipewerx.com/yamaha-fzs-600-fazer-98-03-hawk-powder-black-round-gp-race-exhaust.html

Housemate fellow biker is convinced that:

a) Im a hooligan and going to deafen everyone in the world (he says with his de-catted straight through BMW R1200  :rollin )
b) its going to cause serious fuelling issues and make the bike run so lean that it melts the pistons or something

So my question to you FOCers is am I going to potato the engine? If so what do I need to do to prevent said potato-ing of the engine. Its my understanding that Fazers tend to run hella rich as standard, do I really need to get my carbs re-jetted because that sounds like a lot of hassle and expense.

As far as I know the bike engine/carbs are totally standard. Only thing in the system thats not standard is the K&N "high flow" air filter, and soon to be this exhaust.

FZS600 Fazer / strange electrical problem & oil light
« on: 01 August 2016, 06:59:48 pm »
So my Fazer has started doing something odd!

When the engine is cold, if you put the steering on full lock to the right, the oil warning and low fuel lights switch on, and the radiator fan start spinning! It seems to not do it when the engine has warmed up though. Ive had a look at the wiring assuming its a loose connection somewhere, or something pinching when I turn to full lock, but cant find anything.

Also my oil warning light sometimes flickers on at random for just a second, then goes off again, the things Ive found that usually cause it is hard acceleration (traffic light grand prix is almost guaranteed to cause it  :lol ) or speed bumps, so again Im assuming loose connection somewhere as the oil level is perfect. It also sometimes does it at random when driving along at motorway speeds on a perfectly flat, straight road with no hard acceleration.

Im at a loss for where to look though, Ive checked the obvious places and cant find anything! Anyone had a similar issue or got any ideas?

As the title says I need a black knob!  :rollin (Ive got no idea what the part is actually called and Im well immature :P )

So I got on my Fazer thismorning and stabbed myself in the thumb on the metal switch when I went to put the indicator on at the end of the road, turns out this bit has somehow fallen off and disappeared into the void.
The metal pole/switch it covers is still there, its just the plastic cover has somehow fallen off!

Local bits shop says they arent sold seperately and my only choice via them is to buy a whole new switch assembly which I aint doing! :rolleyes

So does anyone happen to have a spare switch assembly lying around or breaking a Fazer that they could salvage the knob from?

FZS600 Fazer / Fitting more stuff on the handlebars!
« on: 11 January 2016, 08:34:30 pm »
Maybe Im just not making the most of whats available, but does anyone else find theres bugger all room on the standard handlbars for mounting stuff? Theres no room on the right side due to brake fluid reservoir, I cant fit anything in the middle because of a big bolt head meaning nothing fits under the bars, and the little room on the left side is taken up by heated grips control switch! I want to fit a phone/satnav holder but cant find one that fits!

I got one of these extension arm thingy mounts and fitted it to one of the fairing bolts, but it vibrates so much its practically unusable, youre busy focusing on the satnav wobbling so much by the time youve figured out where youre meant to turn youve missed the turning!  :eek

Anybody got a solution? How have you lot mounted various bits and bobs on the handlebars? Anybody got a link to a phone holder/mount that doesnt suck? :)

FZS600 Fazer / Fuel tank range?
« on: 21 December 2015, 12:01:31 pm »
From what Ive been able to find on t'internets, Yamaha suggests the FZS600 should only be capable of 130 miles to a full tank?  :eek  What on earth are they doing to get such poor mileage? Ive ranged between 150-220 miles to a full tank depending on how ballsy I was feeling between fillups and how far I could push my luck! :P

Whats the sort of average MPG and range you get out of the Fazer? Ive tried using fuelly but cant get it to work properly, plus I dont really bother keeping petrol reciepts and noting the mileage! Rough calculations using an MPG calculator puts my MPG anywhere between 45-55MPG which dont seem to bad, and thats with fairly conservative riding.

Also the fuel gauge seems to be totally useless, when filling up to the brim, it stays above the F marker for about 80-100 miles, then instantly drops down to about 2/3rds of a tank, and the remaining 2/3rds vanishes very quickly! I dont really want to run it til its totally dry and risk wrecking my carbs or dragging crap into the fuel system.

What can be done to improve MPG as well? I generally tend to run on "super" petrols, because it only costs about 30p more to fill the tank and maybe the placebo effect benefits are worth it so why not? :rollin Ive not really owned it long enough to make a judgement on it, but I do seem to get marginally better range on super unleadeds. Filters and plugs were all done about 2 months ago so they should all be good. Ive heard mutterings that changing your sprockets can give better economy too, any truth in this?

FZS600 Fazer / Tyre Pressure on Aftermarket wheels?
« on: 14 November 2015, 10:15:49 am »
I *think* the previous owner of my Fazer has fitted aftermarket (possibly R1?) wheels, and fatter tyres than the stock ones.

Whilst this makes handling lovely, and long sweeping bends an absolute pleasure (though it does give me the turning circle of a battleship)... Ive got no idea what pressure I should set my tyres to! Any suggestions?

I think tyre sizes are front: 120/70/17 and rear 190/50/17 (though doing that from memory, at work at the moment! Will have to double check when on break! :P )

Introduction / Another newbie!
« on: 09 November 2015, 09:57:15 pm »
'ello all!

Just passed my DAS last week (first time too, much better than car test which I failed 3 times  :rollin ) and bought a lovely 2001 FZS600 for my first "proper" bike, upgrading from a lil YBR125 that Id been on for 18 months.

Touch wood, Ive not had any issues with the Fazer and hope it stays that way, but thought Id join here and get to learn a bit more about them!

Currently living in London, moved up here from Cornwall last year to train as a paramedic, got about 6 months left til graduation and eventually aiming to have a crack at the medic bikes but lets not get too far ahead of ourselves :P

Heres my new baby, only picked her up today and its the most fun Ive had biking so far by miles... absolutely shafts the ER6 I was learning on.  :D
