Modifying fzs600 Pannier rack
« on: 02 May 2014, 11:35:42 am »
I'm trying to source a Givi monkey pannier rack for my 1999 fzs600.... Obvs they are obsolete now but I have friends with welding and cutting gear.

So can the rack for a fzs600  fz6 04-06 be modified? I'm guessing it's really just the distance between bolt under seat and foot peg mount and maybe the wide for stabilizing cross section?? Or is there a cheaper option?

get a wing rack (£25-30) and make your own mounts rather than bastardising a decent bit of kit

If you have friends with that gear and they are good friends then get them to build you a custom made rack out of angle iron.
That's what I've done, much stronger than standard ones.
Then just bolt the monokey/lock plate to it.
Will cost about £10-£15 in angle and bolts

I was thinking about building a complete custom job, wasn't sure if I could get the part the luggage clips too separately and built a frame to suit.

As for the wingrack, I thought that was for top box and panniers? I already have a top plate for top box

Built a few racks for the 600, it's really quite easy when you know how. I used box section for the rails where the grab handle goes, and the same fir the rack base.  You just need to put some arms and clips for the panniers. A doddle if you can weld and cut metal.
Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!

The plate that the box attaches to can be bought separately, in fact you can buy cheapo boxes with a plate for about £30 on ebay and build a rack around that!

If you go to a dealer you can buy any number of spares for the givi range, I bought the pins and lock mount for about £6 then again using angle iron built the frame for panniers.

Did spot this Krauser wing rack where smooching round ebay the other day. Chap has one for old 98-99 and 00-03 Fazer. Can't say I've heard of the brand, but looks interesting.

Krauser are a very good make, but then you need the krauser boxes to fit!

Someone had one on eBay for a 99 fazer that was about £75. Think his user name was extrusion22 or similar.

I've just fitted an FZ6 pannier rack (Givi PL351) to my  2003 FZS600 over the weekend, it was really simple. The parts I made are being powder coated at the minute but I will post pictures when I get them back towards the end of the week.

Essentially I just made a mount which bolts under the grab handle at the back of the bike for the top of the pannier rack. The point where the rack bolts into the footpeg is unchanged, I just bolted it in above the footpeg rather than below as this conflicted with the exhaust mount. And finally the bar which links the panniers on both sides to each other I cut in the centre and made approximately 20mm longer.

It was really easy, only took me a few hours, and you dont have to resort to having one of those awful wingracks on your bike.

Yup those wingracks although practical, have never been the prettiest of add ons  :)
Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it..

Apparently has already been altered to fit a '99 fazer. Just in case you wanted one already done. £75 with no bids.

Also a wingrack with full fitting kit for 2000 onwards fazer for £50
