Title: TomTom Rider 2nd Edition SatNav
Post by: mikelockyer on 04 May 2013, 12:32:44 pm
Hi Has anyone experienced problems with operating this sat nav from the bike battery. Mine stopped working from the direct battery cable and will not charge. I have changed the cable to the battery and the bike dock to no avail. Any suggestions or solutions please. Regards Mike

you will probably find its the cradle the 4 brass pins wont be touching the back of the unit if it works off the car cradle or off the pc (usb) the first port of call is the cradle

That was definitely a problem with the 1st edition where movement in the cradle wore them down, but for the 2nd edition the sprung pins and better cradle largely overcame that. You need to trace back from the pins to the battery with a current tester. Worth checking the plug into the bottom of the cradle. That can come loose.

IF the battery is knackered at least you can buy a new one and fit it..........

Not a TomTom but I have a Garmin Zumo 220  and had the same problem. On mine there is a voltage dropper on the cable to the battery deigned to drop the voltage from 12.5 to 5v for the sat nav. When measured at the end of the cable where it goes into the sat nav there was no voltage. Spoke to Garmin and they sent me another cable by return of post, even though the unit is 2 yrs old. Don't know if it's relevant to your Tom Tom but worth checking?

Hi Thanks for all the suggestions. I have gone through all of them except checking voltage at the dock end of the cable as I dont have anything small enough to go into the sockets. Working on it. Regards Mike

You can by a small hand held tester with the probes included from Maplins for about a tenner.

The latest is that I have tested all leads (i now have 3) and they all register 13.3 volts at the sat nav end. Same as power take of from the battery.  Iam now the proud owner of 2 bike docks and 3 cables and 1 problem.  Still not working properly fon bike. Help!

Hi Problem solved with sat nav bike dock. It appears that I was sold a faulty bike dock. Had to consult a sat nav technician. Supplier replaced faulty item and sat nav now works on bike and car. Anyone who wants a good sat nav technician, I have one. Although he tested everything but could not rectify the fault on the spot, it was NO CHARGE and he spent a couple of hours checking. Good man.
