Title: Yorkshire Dales & moors
Post by: phil on a fazer on 23 September 2013, 12:37:43 pm
Hi

Im going to be staying on the west side on the Yorkshire moors soon. I was planning on zigzagging my way towards the moors, touching up on some nice roads then heading back using a different route.

Any stand out roads? or towns?

Cheers

The A169 Pickering to Whitby is the obvious one across the moors. I did this a few weeks back and enjoyed the ride. Turned out there was a massive steam rally on at pickering, not every day you get stuck behind a traction engine! Pickering looked a nice enough little town/village (don't they all int he sunshine?) although I didn't stop due to crowds.

If you're interested in visiting towns then Whitby is certainly worth an hour or two's exploring. There's a cafe frequented by biker's right in the centre of town next to Morrisons, and the town is famous for it's fantastic fish and chips and for the ruined abbey on top of the hill (and also a great YHA right next door!). Gets fairly lively weekend evenings due to Northern monkeys  ;).

After staying the night in Whitby I headed home towards the midlands via the A171 (not a bad road) and Scarborough. Again, nice little sea side town with a friendly biker's cafe right on the sea front. Can sit out front by the sea and everyone is very friendly. Was the owner and local instructors there when I visited, nice folks.

Other than these two roads I don't have any further info, one of my least visited parts of the country so I'd be interested to hear of an other good ones too. Can take the A66 and be in the lakes pretty quickly if you fancy.

The B1257 Helmsley to Stokesley is a nice ride although watch out for camera vans also known as the "Yorkshire TT"

Yorkshire Dales is unfinished business for me, as I got chased away by heavy rain last time I went there, had to escape to Wales for drier weather (not often you get to say that!  :lol ).
So I'm watching this thread with interest  :)

From the west, Guisborough, A171 to Whitby then south on A171 to Scarborough or A169 to Pickering, your choice moors or sea?
A170 back to Helmsley is a good coffee stop, usually lots of bikes in the market place there, then back to Thirsk by A170 Sutton Bank.
Do look out for grey transit vans that NY Police use, others may warn you of their presence.

Rode a lot of these roads a few years ago, a couple that really stood out for me were the B1363 which took me from the outskirts of York up to near Helmsley, where I picked up the B1257 to Stokesley. Both of these roads were a good mix of tight twisties, fast flowing bends and the odd straight bit to get your breath back. Like someone has already said, the B1257 is very popular with local bikers, some of them obviously know the road really well and are very quick along there, I just kept an eye out for them and kept out of their way. Didn't see any cameras along there but I believe they are quite common now.
From Stokesley I headed up towards Guisborough and picked up the A171 to Whitby, Scarborough, then the A165 to Bridlington, Hull, over the Humber Bridge and Grimsby and a nice coastal route to Sutton on Sea to meet up with family and friends.
Some great roads and a really enjoyable day out on my old Fazer  :)
