Front Brake Pads
« on: 14 January 2012, 04:24:43 pm »

Hello all..

Just whipped off my calipers and noticed that my pads are nearly down to the metal..

I bought my Fazer at the end of Nov and it needed a load doing to it.. i have just got round to the front end and am putting on stainless steel lines..

Calipers, piston and seals seem to be in good condition..

So i was wondering ... with so many choices on the market ... what make/type brake pads do you guys use??

GG/hh/sintered etc... Goldfren/EBC/Brembo or OEM??

What do you think?  :)

I tried  Goldfren HH's a couple of years ago and they were a bit crap.  :eek
I've also used Armstrong HH which were also not very good although a mate of mine who races a bit says a lot of track boys really like them :rolleyes
Using EBC HH's at the mo, no complaints. :)  Also got them off Fleabay for £24 full front set (2 pairs) for a Gen1 which was a BARGAIN!!
Hope this helps a little :b
Its better to ask a stupid question than make a stupid mistake.

EBC HH in the front, some organic something or other in the back.

Tried a few "budget brands" and either had problems or they did not work as well or wore out very fast, so I stick with what I know.

the best yam dealer in the midlands fit EBC  ....and I agree with them. The OEM are the best , but crazy price. I have used EBC over 40 K miles on 2 bikes...not had any issues on road or on a track.EBC are around £50 for full front end set ( 2 pairs), maybe get better deal on e bay, just check they R genuine .

I used to swear by EBC but a few years back they really lost the plot producing a pad that was very wooden in feel and high wear to the discs.  Stopped using them and tried a different makes since Carbon Lorraine, Ferodo all good but settled on SBS found them to be excellent in all areas about the same price as EBC.

You need HS634 front and either LS770 or for the later FZ1 LS657, they are listed as Street Excel. Keep away from Dual Sinter (DS), Dual Carbon (DC), Race Sinter (RC) of Race Carbon Tech (RQ) the latter four types are all very good but are race/road or pure race they dont really offer all round performance you need on the road especially on a cold wet Mon morning on the way to work  :eek  but great for summer blasts and track days  ;) .

Cheers for your replies Guys...

EBC it is then..  or SBS .. mmmm

I had already thought EBC because my mate on his XJR1300 fitted some recently and he was very impresssed with them... i had also ran Goldfren on my ZX9r's and although they were fine they were not inspiring..

So EBC HH sintered ... best on Ebay here at £34.95 + £1.90p&p

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EBC-Sintered-Brake-Pad-Full-Front-Set-FZS1000-Fazer-/300640285157?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item45ff8eb1e5

They look quite original... over 10,000 feedbacks and UK company...

Or SBS street excel... best here at £39.99 free p&p

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-Pair-SBS-FRONT-BRAKE-PADS-HH-Yamaha-1000-FAZER-01-05-/150452805544?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2307af9fa8

mmmm quite close in price ... might try the SBS street excel...

I think my local yam dealer quoted me £33 for front pads, so £66 for the front end. To be honest...i was expecting more than that.

Make sure you service the calipers i.e. slowly pump the pistons out by a few mm, clean the whole caliper then push the pistons right back into the caliper body, they should move easily with one finger pressure anymore and there starting to seize!  :eek

Check the discs are within spec and dont have a lip on them if they are out of spec or lipped change them, refit the calipers and put the pads back in.  Pump the level until pads come in contact with the discs now check there is free movement of the front by spinning it (front end off the ground) you should get up to a full turn, not less than half with one pull any more/less and something isn't right. In this case check the pads are square in the caliper bodies and/or the pads aren't binding.

The next bit is curial ride carefully avoid heavy braking for about 20 miles then begin to build up the braking force until you reach 100 miles job done.   :D

When i had my old Blade Performance Bikes did a test on loads of different types of pad. They always found that OEM was the best closely followed by EBC but the EBC had quite a lot less friction material so wore out quicker. I think it was something like 4mm instead of the 6mm the OEM pads had (Don't quote me) Also the EBC pads were more abrasive so wore the discs down quicker. Hardly relevant under 20,000 miles a year though.
Just a thought.
