After a winter being laid up and a recent MOT I've started using the old girl again.
I've noticed I have a speed related whine. When I slow at a junction the noise slows accordingly.
Seems to be from the front.
Some things to check would be ideal.
Could it be the front brake binding?
Speedo cable dry?
Front Sprocket?
-
Speedo drive rotor dry? Mine made a squeal. Finger full of grease solved it.
-
Did you lube the chain? Check the front sprocket for wear (eg hooking of the teeth).
-
Did you put your earplugs in?
Could be the normal "wind noise" from the front trye
-
Have you moved the rear wheel at all, or altered the chain?
Could be the chain rubbing a new path on the plastic chain guide. If it is that it will ease down after a while.
This especially happens if you upgrade your chain to a heavier duty one.
-
Thanks for the suggestions guys.
Just taken both front callipers off and spun the wheel. No noise at all and runs freely. Was going to take front wheel off until I realised I don't have a 19mm bit for my half inch torque.
I'm content it's not the speedo drive anyway.
Definitely not wind noise. You become tuned in to the noise of your own machine and it's not that.
The chain and sprockets were new last year and have just a thousand or so miles on them.
The suggestion around wheel movement is bang on. I tightened the chain when I painted the side stand.
The chain was quite slack so it could be that's it's now rubbing on the guide.
Simple to test I hear you say. Not when you left the ignition on when you parked it last and the battery is flat!!!!
On charge so will test later.

Or bump start it and go for a ride, solve two problems in one go :thumbup

Had similar on mine was dry speedo drive grease sorted this

Could you have overtightened the chain? They like to run quite slack. If the bottom run on the chain doesn't touch the rubber guide when you push it up, it's too tight. This puts strain on the output shaft bearing and can cause it to whine. Don't ask me how I know. :rolleyes

Update....
Those that diagnosed the tight chain....top of the class.
Dropped her in for a service and told them about the noise. When they rang they said the chain had tight links and was a little too tight. Bit annoying as the chain has only done about a thousand miles but I may have been guilty of not lubricating it sufficiently.
The next issue is that from the service they report the back brake is slightly binding. The dreaded rear caliper issue has struck. They say it's only the rubber seals that have gone and the pistons look to be fine. As previously mentioned they are only 45+VAT labour and he reckons it's an hour to and hour and half tops. For me that's a no brainer compared to me trying to do it myself.
Any advice on seal kits? Ebay ones OK or do I need to go branded?

if they are doing the work, get them to provide teh seals so it is guaranteed
