Sometimes I do drop a gear..and yes, the problem then goes away !!

I took the centrestand off a long time ago but it does soon need an oil and filter change. I'll check the TPS, air filter and engine mounts. On other bikes I've loosened all the engine mounting bolts, lifted then lowered the engine with a jack, then retightened the bolts which seemed to help.

I'll let you know how it goes...thanks  :thumbup

FZS600 Fazer / New vibration problem
« on: 02 April 2017, 08:49:40 pm »
Hi All,
I have a problem with vibrations between  4k and 5900 rpm...yes that accurate  :eek

Any ideas what is wrong ? It was runnng fine until recently and I haven't changed or done anything to it. Vibrations are coming through the bars, footrests and frame / tank. The bike has no fairing and the indicators are non-standard and the carbs were balanced recently. The bar end weights are on and to improve the footrests I bolted on some steel bits at the ends...I thought that if it works with handlebars it was worth a try. Seems strange that at 5900 rpm and above it is like someone is switching off the vibes so that there are no vibrations at all.

Any ideas where to look?

FZS600 Fazer / Front brake problem
« on: 19 February 2017, 06:11:13 pm »
When slowing down to give way etc, I notice that my front brakes judder quite badly when the speed gets down to approximately walking speed. Any speed above this they are fine. The pads and discs look okay. I was planning on de glazing the pads.

Any thoughts anyone ?

Here we go, this link takes us to the part I was suggesting. Even the position of 6th gear is easy to see..and drill  :D
I know it's a different bike but same part number I believe.

I'm the same...always going for seventh !! I compare road speed and rpm and work it out but would prefer a simple bulb to light up when in top gear. I saw a video a while ago for a different bike showing an easy system where the small plastic cover on the gearbox (the one with the neutral switch) was removed and a copper rivet or similar was put in where the top gear position is. Then a wire was run up to a light on the dash. Worked a treat for a few quid.
Would this idea work on a Fazer ?

« on: 26 December 2016, 04:44:09 pm »
I went up one tooth on the front sprocket on my previous bike (GSX750f) as I used it for longer journeys. I did stall it occasionally, even one up and it became a nuisance. It was marginally better on long journeys as it was running lower revs and economy was slightly better. I eventually changed it back to standard as most modern bikes are designed to rev high. I always kept to the speed limit which helped !!

My Fazer seems to enjoy revving it's bollocks off at motorway speeds  :)

FZS600 Fazer / Coolant overheating warning light
« on: 20 December 2016, 12:05:03 pm »
Hi All,

I've read on one of the online owner's manuals that the coolant overheating warning light should come on for a few seconds when the ignition is switched on. Mine does not come on at all. The fuel and oil level warning lights do. The coolant level is fine and the bike runs okay.

Any ideas where I should start looking ? ...or should it only come on when the engine is overheating !! It's just that I've noticed the engine has a strange smell recently...without I've been running through cow excrement or something similar  :eek

Centre stand is fine.

The handlebars have the weights attached and an additional 25mm length of 20mm rebar added on (with hole in for fixing bolt) for good measure.

Might try filling the bars with lead shot and silicon sealant or sand, just to make sure  :) Would fixing some heavy weights to the outer edge of the footpegs help at all ?

I had a go on a fuel injected Triumph TT600 recently...and it was about the same as mine anyway, so maybe I'm expecting too much. It's just that previous bikes have been as smooth as silk all the way up the rev range even with no handlebar end weights !

There is... but my link pipe is at a non-standard angle and I was wondering if that could cause vibes to travel from the exhaust to the frame via the centre stand. I might remove the centre stand anyway because I can't use it as the PO lowered the rear suspension  :D

Mine's a single seat with no pillion footpegs ...therefore no missus on the back  :D ..so no problem there!!

Any other thoughts/suggestions/experiences/opinions anyone ? These vibrations are making the riding experience intolerable  :'(

Good point about balancing the carbs at idle. I followed the guide on the forum and it states that the process should be done at tickover. My previous bike, a gsx750f used to be balanced at 1800rpm.

I can understand that throttle bodies can be balanced more accurately and result in a smoother engine but I'm sure mine is as good as it will get....at tickover anyway  :D

One other thing, it has an aftermarket link pipe and silencer and the centrestand pushes against it when it is up. I'm wondering if this is causing some of the vibtation as the right peg vibes worse than the left !!

Also, there are very slight vibes in the handlebars but I read somewhere that as mine are a little bit bent, that is all it needs to set of vibrations in the bars  :eek

The fluid levels change during blipping of the throttle so that some of the fluid moved from one jar to the other. When back at tickover the fluid levels did not change or move (although they are at new, different levels afterwards)... should this happen ? It just appears to me that there is an imbalance higher up the rev range.

FZS600 Fazer / Vibration issue
« on: 16 September 2016, 07:31:58 am »
I've just balanced my carbs in order to cure vibrations in the footrests and seat. The carbs needed minor adjustment but this hasn't improved the vibration problem.

The vibrations are only felt over about 3500 rpm, under this it is more or less vibe free. Also during acceleration there are no vibrations throughout the rev range. The large washer has already been fitted behind the exhaust mounting bolt and I've put a soft rubber washer underneath the front tank bolt which has stopped tank vibes.

I used the two jam jars with fluid method to balance the carbs and this was done with the engine at tickover speed. However, whenever the throttle was blipped, to ensure an accurate balance, the fluid levels in the jars changed quickly. Does this mean that at higher revs the carbs are out of balance ? Or is something else wrong, causing the vibes at higher revs ?

Your thoughts would be appreciated :)

FZS600 Fazer / Carb balancing tools..
« on: 12 September 2016, 10:04:41 pm »
On previous i4 bikes I've successfully used a DIY balancing tool consisting of two jam jars containing light coloured oil with plastic tubing etc.

Will my Fazer balance okay with this set-up or will I have to fork out for a proper tool !!

The Heidenaus are not too bad in the wet and they're fine in the dry. They do loads of miles and are excellent value for money. I don't get much road noise and there are no vibrations. Also they're quite cheap too !!

Here's a recent pic which I've already posted on other threads...
