FOC-U font of knowledge.
« on: 15 June 2015, 10:11:06 am »
Its time to change the laptop at home. You know how they eventually get, sssslllooowww and full of crap, so its got to go before I throw it through the window in a fit of rage :)

Always used windows (currently Win7 ) but not adverse to change.

Only used for home stuff, ie. web surfing, storing pics music and a few home movies. Occasionally a little bit of simple movie editing and plotting routes on Garmin Basecamp. The occasional CD rip as well (but becoming less and less). Got to work with iTunes.

Looking for something fast to boot up with a good battery life and 15" screen.

Should I bite the price tag bullet and look at apple stuff ?   - Reason being is I resisted iphone for years but once I got one it was better than sliced bread :lol

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Well if you go windows, it will be very hard to stick with windows 7. Windows 10 is due out end of next month so if you hang off you will get one with that preinstalled (although it's anyone's guess how good it will be - it has to be better than win 8.1 which I run on :lol)

Apple stuff is very good, but imo a windows machine that you fork out that sort of money for will be good as well.

Have a look at the mid range Lenovo laptops. they seem to work well. Not had any issues with mine over the last couple of years.

Windows devices do slow down over time and need a bit more TLC than a mac but software is more available (for free or cheap) on the Windows devices.
What is the spec of the machine you have? Major changes haven't really happened over the last couple of years so perhaps just a RAM upgrade and a de-clutter is all that needed to get your porn surfing device back on form.

if you get a windows machine it will come with Windows 8 / 8.1 already installed - windows 10 is out later this year but will be free upgrade for all Win 8 + customers if they upgrade within 12months of release.

I have heard from couple of lads at work that used Win10 (beta) that it is very good
I agree buy a mid range laptop with 8GB Ram & 1TB hard drive
pay between 300 - 450 for a decent one new
as BB has said maybe just upgrade ram. defrag & clean up disc and check what other software you got downloaded and may well speed it up!

Once you go Mac you won't go back. Had an Apple for years it's great use the same as you which it copes with very well obviously. It's capable of so much more. It's fast and reliable even when 5 years old. No virus issues as no one writes them for. Mac yet.
Expensive yes but well worth the money, if you have iPhone it will all sync up as well.
