Having gone through the turmoil that is renewal insurance recently as we all do, whilst I cant remember everything the list of mods lots of insurance companies you don't have to declare was surprisingly quite allot.  Like Dudoefrude states, belly pans, levers, screens, end cans, seats, sissey bars, brake lines, huggers, scottoilers and I recall 'modified air filter' came up on one company's list and many more items.  I wouldn't bother mentioning the IVANS, you would be wasting ££ and more importantly you time.  All the modes I've done in the past to my Gen 1 have been used lighter versions of the more expensive OEM parts so the insurance should come down but NO.

Been a bit of a contrast in ££ but appreciate the recommendations the forum have offered.

MCN turned out to be £60 more than CN, like many I got 9 years + NCD, @1500 miles a year on both bikes, voluntary £250 excess plus the compulsory £400, alarmed garage, alarmed disk locks, chains that I have accumulated over the years.  The Harley has an alarm that so sensitive and loud potential thieves would run away.

Got a novel wedge system stopping the up and over garage door being opened plus with two modern cars in front, still makes no real difference in insurance ££.  I know this makes no difference and I don't even live in a high risk area.

Best I got so far is CN £210 with recovery, green flag is way over the @£65 CN charge.

Got 2 more weeks to get it sorted fingers crossed, FFS.

Shop around, get quotes, like for like policies, go back to CN and tell them you've got it cheaper tell them who, how much.  Either they beat, get very close or you insure elsewhere.

I've been doing the above for years, I've never paid their renewal quote ever. this year CN wanted to increase mine by £70 and switch me to another insurer wit £300 more excess.  Got it back to last year price and only £50 more excess, I've been with CN for well over 20yrs.

Many yearly cover suppliers, RAC, AA, Phones etc love people who just renew, why because they can screw you!  Also look out for the auto renew schemes, yes they stop you having to worry, but they renew (ie they take the money) about 5 days (can be more) before the actual renewal date.  If you don't do the above before the auto pay date, you'll have reduced your bargaining power e.g. you may get a refund, but perhaps not a reversal in say increase in excess.  Why because you've already bought the policy.  You could cancel which may or may not have a fee and then re-quote for a new policy, if the fee is a fair bit less than the difference between a new policy, probably worth it cancelling.

That said some don't, my car insurer always is either cheaper than last year or the same, mostly it's been cheaper.

Yep, all of the above..........

So far.........

Did a new quote with CN all same details £210😧

Bennett’s same cover £185 but a bit vague on the application

Hate this time of year😩

Hi just wondering what spring rate you ended up with based on your rider weight and if you have set up your sag settings, what pre load did you end up with to get them?

I just fitted an R1 and still having issues over the spring rate they recommended, also the video on there website changing the spring yourself is wrong, it can’t be done on this model anyway.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Fazer 1000 Suspension woes and more
« on: 29 October 2019, 09:48:25 am »
From what you're describing, the fork lowers may have worn to an unacceptable level - there is apparently an inherent fault with the Gen 1 forks, with the lower fork cartridge / fork lower  wearing against the fork springs and the fork oil then turning to abrasive sludge.  There's a great thread about it here on the FZ1OA site (hopefully you can view it without having to create an account):
http://www.yamahafz1oa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=126071&highlight=gen+fork+wear
This problem is exacerbated by not changing the fork oil regularly and the wear becomes so bad that you can apparently feel knocking sensations coming through the forks, almost like the head bearings have gone?
If this is the problem you may well have to replace the front forks, whether they be another pair of standard units (risk of replacement forks having the same problem), R6 5SL right-way-up forks as I fitted to mine back around 2011 or early-ish R1 forks.  The latter two options usually drop the front-end by over an inch, not necessarily a problem but something else to consider.

Interesting reading, do I assume then that OE forks upgraded by KTEC has completely removed this fault described or is just a temporary fix?

« on: 07 October 2019, 07:00:37 pm »
See what you mean, Brooks advised to stick a YSS on for less than £300 with 100N spring would be the same cost to service the old shock, yes they would say that but original parts are the issue.  Thing is I have a pukka Öhlins on it & selling the bike I’ll  get xxxx all for it if I leave it on. :eek

50000, just run in on this engine..........can’t wait to retire & get mine up to that.  Get the gearing sorted, larger rear & smaller front sprocket on a Full Monty, no need to rev the nuts off it........will last forever👍👍

Well looked after examples with the usual sensible upgrades that “Pieater” explains in the top “sticky” we all know it benefits from, will likely appeal to ex owners & value it the most, that said It was a classic when it first came out & will always be one.👍

This will probably come back to haunt me, Plus 1 for fuel stabilisers, 17 years of use & no carb leaking.  Dreading taking the carbs off😩

I normally only do dry weather trips unless a weekend away comes up however, The 3D-XM’s worked well in the wet but I never tested the limit, they spun up quite easily over white lines in the wet in a straight line without hardly any throttle.  Not sure if any others tyres wouldn’t.

21
Storm 3D-XM.  Met a guy whilst waiting for my MOT on a 1200 bandit that carries roughly the same combined weight I do when the wife's on board.  After 2K of heavy use they looked fine. Have been very impressed with the older Storm ST's in the past. Getting them fitted Monday.
[/quote
How are you guys getting with these, I ask because they are cheaper than any of the other big brands atm.
So far they have been excellent both two up & a 1000 mile scratch following boy racers on race bikes.  I did the same trip 10 years ago on some Avon Azaros that had about 3K on them & where destroyed when I got back. The 3D’s are so solid under braking, rain & the centre header section has no signs of squaring off.  Top tire.
