cam chain tensioner ?
« on: 28 November 2011, 08:13:07 pm »
My 98 FZS600 has developed a rattling noise that only comes in around 6000rpm. The noise seems to be coming from the top of the engine arond where the cam chain is. I thought it might be the adjuster but from what I can gather if it was the adjuster it would be noticeable on tick over and would get better when engine gets hot or clutch lever is pulled in. Mine sounds sweet untill the revs get around 6000 and does not go away when warmed up. Its only done 24000 miles, 10000 in the last two years since I bought it. Any advice before I start tinkering would be helpfull.

my advice if you do start tinkering: mark the cam chain links and corresponding tooth on each cam shaft so its easy to line up the chain and sprocket and get the timing spot on without too much hassle! Try resetting the tensioner first, then replace the cam chain. To do it properly you need to split the engine to loop it on the crankshaft sprocket at the bottom of the engine so be warned...

Check the tappats first, as the service schedule for the tappats is 24000 miles and check the valve timing, all the marks should line up exacly, if not then the cam chain is mostly likely worn and needs to be replaced. It is rare for the tensioner to give trouble on the Fazer. I replaced the cam chain on my 600 at 50,000 miles with a split chain from Wemoto and it now has 65000 and still ok. It was rattling for 5000 miles before I got around to changing it..
