General / pinlock insert: how did i manage to ride without one!!!!!!
« on: 08 November 2012, 05:28:21 pm »
I know this won't be news to a lot of people. But have just fitted my first clear insert and it is bloody marvelous !!!!
Not only has it TOTALLY  stopped fogging but has also reduced glare and the starburst effect of oncoming lights
I don't usually recommend products but these are a must have for anyone riding this time of year.
£18 inc postage from racevisors if you have a pinlock ready visor. Even worth £40 for a replacement visor if you don't have pinlock  ready.

No chance of reading a number plate from that angle.
I think it's got more to do with the cybermen coming  :eek

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Headlight Fuse is Melting, not breaking but MELTING!
« on: 05 November 2012, 01:51:06 pm »
This sounds like a poor connection, probably to one of the blades of the fuse.
Check the connectors are clean and tighten them... it should require a noticeable amount of force to shove the fuse in. If that's not the problem then the cable, where it joins to the connector may have corrosion or a few broken strands, in which case you'll need to remake the end.
The problem is indeed too much resistance where there shouldn't be.
As others have been pointing out, that will result in less power... but only from an overall point of view. If the contact resistance to one end of the fuse is, say a tenth of an ohm, that will lose a volt across it if the current is 10 amps... the lights will then be working from a volt less, but the current won't reduce by much as a result... even if they were simple resistors it would only be a 9% drop (in fact they're non-linear resistors... they'll be a little bit cooler and yellower so their resistance will also have dropped a bit).

So the headlamps are dissipating a little bit less power, but the poor old fuse is now trying to get rid of 10 watts (resistance x current squared = power) as a result it gets hot enough to melt the plastic.

Have to absolutely agree with Fazerider,
I am assuming when you measured 10A current the fuse was removed and your meter was across the fuse contacts?
10A is about right for a good loom with 2 off 55w bulbs, not sure how you measured 70 ohms tho??? 2 bulb filiments should measure about 0.7 ohms!!!
sounds like you were measuring the additional resistance of poor contacts between the fuse and fuse holder which as Fazerider says is responsible for the volt drop and excessive heat across the fuse.
only other cause is that the fuse itself has excessivly fatigued and has built up its own internal resistance (rare but can happen)

FZS600 Fazer / Re: stuttering fzs 600
« on: 02 November 2012, 01:29:21 pm »
hi CRH, i had a very similar problem last week, but mine stuttered at anything above 4k.
it was actually dropping a cylinder.
the prob with mine i think was 3 issues,
the well for the plug caps had wet leaves that had blown in (due to being parked up under a tree)
i also found a HT lead was a bit loose in the cap on cylinder no2
and when i took the plugs out the gaps were way too wide, cleaned and closed the gaps and it now runs better than it has in ages

The point I found interesting in the original post was that there is a school of thought that suggests a headlights gives a one dimensional point that is harder to judge speed and distance than a 3 dimensional image of a bike?
I can kinda understand the physics . But have always thought lights on is best ?

on the 2002 the side lights are switchable, I always ride with dipped lights. but due to winter coming and dark foggy commutes i want to not only improve how much i can see, but also maximise my visibility to others.
i live in a pretty rural area with shite lighting, plenty of pot holes and regular badger/fox road kill appearing. which is why i am looking at having the bullets permantly lit.
not sure how yellow lens covers would behave in adverse weather???
might be worth trying them tho maybe as a combination, yellow headlights and white runners??
that should confuse the cagers  :\

i was planning on getting a pair of the bikevis bullet led lamps for winter, when i stumbled across this site
http://www.dadrl.org.uk/motorcycleinstructor.html

he has the very that daytime lights even dipped beam can be a bad idea???
anyone else got any views on this?

also if i get and fit the leds i was intending on having them permantley on, including with high beam. would doing this be illegal or cause problems with MoT?

cheers

600 all the way!!!!!
1000 for touring or long journeys . The thou is too much for every day and the 600 will give abreast 55 meg

You can buy some spray graphite grease specifically for this job
It's about 4 quid from maplin . Works a treat and stays protecting the barrel

Has anyone got a DB meter and measured just how loud they are..?

Mine is sat at home in its tin still, whilst I'm 300 miles away working. I do have a sound meter and can measure compare frequencies too. I won't be able to do the job this weekend. But full facts should be readyvthe weekend after.
As the thread has developed I'm thinking of following CRH and to fit both via a relay.
Best of both worlds then.

Yes the duty on fuel is evil.
My 600 is my commuter which thankfully I'm getting about 56 meg
Prob I have is our cage , old audi A4 v6 which get 22 mpg tops.
Which means we use the bike more ,great in good weather, but try bringing ya weeks shopping home on one  :\

Sound waves are a funny thing though. the frequency can have as much affect as the amplitude of a sound.
When i tested my new acumen in the garage my girlfriend said she could hear it in the house much louder than the original.

For example big fog horns have a bassy tone because it carries further than a high pitch tone.

heres a thought Clayt do some distance comparisons if you can and possibly sit say in a car with the DB meter before and after?
Lets get all mythbusters about it lol
I will happily go all mythbusters on it as long as I don't have to blow it up after.
I'm sure I can get the missus to help with some in car measurements  :'(
If not I have a scope that will capture the waveform and I can then calculate the attenuation through steel  and glass
Will also check current to see if a relay is needed , gut feeling says no tho.

Don't just leave it ticking over!!! Just ride gently below 4-5k revs for the first few miles.

I just found a review on mcn that pretty much slates it for anything bigger than a 125 and people saying the poem was better .
Too late for me cos it's already ordered. I have a sound meter so will check what the original puts out before  swapping and post results.

I've just purchased the acumen too. I have a db meter and will also check the current it draws when it arrives
If it's as good as it sounds 2 might be over kill, but until I get 1 fitted and tested  I'm not ruling 2 out as an option

:\ there is a vast difference between a professionals advice that is best for the job, and what someone is prepared to install  or spend on a homer!
It's horses for courses. To install a deterrent and something that could help u identify  your local rif  raf  then wireless is fine and cheap.
If you are looking to get a conviction through a court then only top notch will do.
Personally I go for alarms, cos if I hear it and they don't run.......... then I get my own justice!!
No need to slate someone for giving professional point of view?
