DJDLTD - I went through your videos and it seems like I will be ordering your dash soon :-)

Sorry, just getting error message while trying to open the link

I went with the Triumph springs due to costs. They were quite firm but as you’re heavier they may be OK 😬
thanks mate.
I will try to find some. I took a look briefly, but could not find any. But I am not in a hurry anyway.

54
many thanks to you both!

I will propably check with a guz who use to maintaine my suspension, when he will be back from Spain.
However, as the R1 forks seems not to be maintained long time, I decided to do the standard maintenance (new seals, oil etc.) but I will not change the standard spring yet.I will see how it will fork. I will only need to find proper setting for them on Fazer.

Regarding the trackdays, I used to do trackdays often in the past even with Fazer, but no enough time now. Therefore, I will be happy if I will do one or two trackdays next year. This means that I can use softer spring, as you recommend 9.0 could be enough.

I had a chance to test ride the r1000ss rear shock finaly which is pretty nice step forward in behaviour of the bike. Just need to change damping settings and it will ve good.I have also lowered front forks by 1cm in the yokes and it changed the handling remarkably. However with all tgese changes feeling from the front forks is much worse even with progresive springs. Therefore my decision to go to R1 forks in the winter seems to be good.

The oil quantity is fairly irrelevant but a litre suffices for both legs. The air gap is the way to set the quantity. I used a thin metal rod with a piece of tape round it and measure from the top of the outer tube down to the oil. Needs to be bled by pumping up and down to remove all air first. There’s a procedure in the service manual that describes it.
Ok thanks, understood probably.Just thinking, if you are 80kg with gear and I am about 100 with gear, then I should probably go with 10N spring, right?Do not you know what rate is the standard R1 spring?
Anyway, just for the information. I have fitted S1000rr rear shock recently, have ridden it dor the dirst time yesterday, and it is much better. I only need to set it up better, because I had everything on 5 but it was bit tough. So I will set it up to 4 and will see then

Check out what I did when I had the 4XV front end.

Triumph springs used (post 14)

many thanks, very useful!
Do you remember how much oil did you put in the fork, please?
And, maybe weird question, but how do you measure air gap please?

58
Providing you don't take passengers, you'll need springs to cope with a rider weight of around 102kg, allowing for leathers, boots, helmet etc. Just explain that, to whoever you choose to supply the springs. :thumbup
I will try, but I am not sure, whether they will be able to give me correct value, because the forks are going to be used on the bike heavier by 30kg.Therefore I am trying to find someone, who went the same route and has some experience.

Introduction / I am new here
« on: 30 September 2020, 08:44:44 am »
Hi everybody here!
I am pretty new here, I used to read some topics earlier.I have got FZS1000 first gen, but I am not new to this as first time I bought the FZS was back in 2013.
It is really good and reliable bike, mainly from the engine point of view, however I dont know why I did not find this forum much sooner.I used to do trackdays with Fazer in the past, short & long circuits too.
Now, I am about to make few modifications to the bike, R1 front end, Ivans kit, maybe full exhaust system, or at least akra or arrow slip on.Basically, i have titanium Akra slip on at home, it has 60mm inlet, but I cannot find genuine Akra link pipe for it. It seems to be discontinued.
In addition, I would like to buy FZ1 gen2 too, if I will sell my second current bike.

Thanks for the useful hints.
I just purchased 4XV forks for my Fazer. The youkes are in my mates to be upgraded with new stem. So I cannot wait to get it all fitted then.
Anyway, just an remark, does anyone know why I cannot sign into this forum via Tapatalk, please?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Fitting a manual cam chain tensioner
« on: 28 September 2020, 09:52:43 am »
Get the bike fully warmed up, once a month or so, just hold it in second gear and rev it to 7- 8k for a minute or so.  Dual carriageway or motorways are excellent for this so as not to fall foul to speeding.  Alternatively just rev it to the same sort of level and gear more often but in burst every few days. Like accelerating on to a dual carriageway.
ok perfect, good to know. thanks
I will have to check the chain tension anyway, as the bike has done more than 83t kms already.

Hi all,
reading the topic, I just thinking, in case the automatic tensioner stacks, how can it be "easily" corrected, please?

If it sticks, you get a bit of chain noise. To "fix " it, just ride the bike. Fresh oil helps, lots of revs help more.
ok then, thanks.
I do not think the chain is loosen, but good to know.I have put fresh oil just 2 or 3 months ago and yes, I also use to rev the engine while riding. Not too much, but sometimes I love to feel that power :-D

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Ivan slip on kit bypass holes
« on: 28 September 2020, 07:34:46 am »
Missed this earlier, sorry.

Two options with Ivan's kits and stock headers:

Fit Slip-On kit and keep stock silencer or fit aftermarket end can.  The latter will give around 128bhp with no other mods.  The stock silencer will give less peak bhp but the midrange gains and smoother throttle response from idle will be the same.

Fit MB kit and aftermarket end can.  You will also have to modify the airbox lid, fit a performance air filter and profile the intake stubs.  This combination is what is know as the Full Monty.  Will give up to 136bhp on a good engine, maybe more if you're lucky.

You should not fit an MB kit without the other mods and certainly not with a stock silencer.

Hope this helps. :)
Thanks, yes, this definitely helps.Just one remark.
I use slip-on on the fazer with stock headers yet. I will probably keep stock headers. Only if would anyone show me that I will not loose the current midrange performance. However, I have modified the airbox lid already and plan is to modify intake boots too. However, I am not sure I want to use performance airfilter.
I will have to clean up the carbs this winter, therefore I would like to buy one of the Ivan`s kit. Now, I need to decide which kit to use.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Another S1000RR Shock Question
« on: 26 September 2020, 08:51:36 pm »
I did not measure it but I found an information that the bmw shock with silver bottom, the one I have, is longer by 4mm than fazer shock, which is good. Hence I swapped the standard dog bones back. Now I have to wait till I could ride it again.
Cannot wait🤩

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Another S1000RR Shock Question
« on: 24 September 2020, 10:35:48 am »
In the end took a much closer look at the rear end.  I did not remove the bushes on BM shock, I fitted suitable spacers at top mount along with bushings which allowed retention of 10mm top bolt - no drilling top or bottom of shock.

Once all fitted all play at shock top removed thats when I found play at the front mount where connected to frame, once this sorted all good.

Rear end is set at OEM, height front lower as early R6 front forks fitted.  Forks and Shock resprung to suit me, front end a bit harsh over sharp bumps, ideally needs revalving, but this bike handles a lot better and is very accurate through the twisties.  It compares very much like my previous bike GSXR1000 which was resprung/revalved - pretty happy.

Not sure how your USD forks compare lengthwise to my RWUP r6 forks - info on this site somewhere - but if it is anything like mine I would ride the bike with lower front end - you might prefer it.
Finaly I have managed to fit the S1000RR shock yesterday evening and used lowering dog bone kit by 25mm.However, I read some information this morning that the early s1000rr shock is longer than the newer one. The newer ones lower fork is in silver colour and I have got the same - the newer one.Now I am little bit confused, whether I should swap the lowering dog bones back to standard dog bones to keep the rear hight basically in the same level or not.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: BMW S1000RR shock conversion question

Set the rear preload 15 to 20mm, be careful not to wind the adjuster off the threads as it will damage them.
Set all damping adjusters to 4.
I weigh 85kg and my wife about 55kg which is 40kg more than your weight and have toured with that setting.

After 20000km I changed the damping to 5 all round and never had to touched the preload in that time.
Hi,I just fitted s1000rr shock into my FZS and was looking for how to set it up properly. So, many thanks for your advices about setting up of damping.Just a question, the rear preload is for standard bmw spring, or is it with different spring? And the rear preload 15-20mm is from the top side right?
Anyway, I read some info, that the rear shocks use to have different length. For the earlier ones the lowering dog bone kit is needed and for the later ones it is not needed. How can I find out whether I need the lowering kit or whether I should stay with the standard dog bones, please?TIA

Hi,
how did you manage to get the bushes out of the top end of the shock?I am just about to fit the shock to my bike. I bought lowering kit by 25mm, so it should keep the rear end about the stock hight.
I will be fitting the early R1 4xv front forks, so will see what the difference will be.
Anyway, I saw some kind of kit to higher the front end just for this purpose.

« on: 16 September 2020, 12:16:47 pm »
Replied by PM yesterday. :)

Here's what I wrote in case anyone else is wondering:

You can enlarge the second hole but it makes very little difference to performance and tends to make the mixture a little too rich at part throttle.  Also, it's more difficult to get at the rear hole, so overall it is easier and just as effective to enlarge only the middle hole. The Slip-On kit has 122.5 main jets, the MB kit (used for Full Monty) has 127.5 mains and a different needle profile.  The MB kit is designed to flow more fuel to work with less restrictive full system exhausts.  However, with the appropriate mods to the inlet rubbers and airbox lid, it works very well with the stock headers and a less restrictive end can.Hope this helps. Mike
hello Mike & all, thank you for the useful info. One question, I read a lot about the Full Monty kit but I still cannot find what is it all about. I know it contains Ivans MB kit, but what else?If I would fit slip-on with or without less restrictive 4-2-1 headers, do I need full monty kit, or is the MB kit enough?
Thanks in advanceMarek
