Must admit it still surprises me when I give it a handfull :)

That top end acceleration is something else.

Being of the old progressive braking school I don't see any reason to change how I brake
I like technology that sits in the background waiting to work if required (ABS and Traction control)

Agree with this, I'm the same and brake how I always have. The ABS is just in the background and I've had it operate a couple of times ever (2 bikes now over about 4 years). Weird feeling but makes you realise when you're on the edge.

Yes it's been done to death and very heated on some forums :)

Firstly, ABS isnt just for braking but is also a steering aid (primarily so in a car actually), it allows control of the bike while at the limits of braking. This is something the non-ABS fanboys fail to realise.

Secondly, in panic situations or moment of low concentration it will be responding well before any human could and could save your skin.

Let's be honest, everyone talks of skilled braking blah blah, but in reality we ride in some grim conditions, cold, wet early in the morning commuting, long tedious journeys getting tired etc.

In those instances and in moments of emergency braking even the most skilled riders can  throw the controlled braking book out of the window.

Look at professional racers, yeah super skilled braking for corners but quite often a bike goes down in front of them and they give it a handful in panic and either hit them or go straight into kitty litter as they can't control it under such hard braking.

Anyway, something there for the ABS haters to get going on ;)

Blimey, comparing ABS and FI to water cooling :)

Water cooling is a sensible and effective way to keep an engine at optimal operating temperature. It's been around for donkeys years and not something that puts the maintenance in the hands of the dealers IMO.

I fitted the Halfords version (copy of the Magnum) direct to the existing bracket and wiring.

A relay is good but not needed unless you plan to lean on the horn for more than a few seconds. A short blast is all that's needed in reality unless you like to use them aggressively.

I'd use a relay for a compressor version like the nautilus though.

Unfortunately people have too many distractions now, such as very loud stereos or hands-free headphones in to talk to their friends about their latest Twitter post.

Even an open pipe and stebel doesn't wake them up and then they look at you like it's your fault when giving them a 'gesture'.

I hope I never need the camera for a real incident, but you pick up countless idiots on the road so can be a laugh simply putting clips of them on YouTube :)

They are allowed to take it if they feel it holds evidence iirc, but mounted on the mirror stalk means it doesn't record my speedo etc so they would have to take the time to measure distance and time etc.

Just pulling you over I doubt they would spot it though to be honest, unlike a helmet mounted camera.

You should also consider a camera to record incidents like this. I have mine on the mirror stalk and record every time I'm riding.

If the connection is slightly loose, just cut a slot lengthways in the end about 2mm thick and use a jubilee clip to tighten the pipe onto the link pipe.

A smear of silicone is always good anyway to seal exhaust joints.

Vibrations are a pain to nail down, I had them and found it was the fairing buzzing off the frame. Some foam pads cured it and no more hand tingling.

I have heard on other posts about actually loosening the front tank mount a touch to allow the rubber mount to absorb the vibes. If its too tight the vibes pass through to the body.

+1 about white smoke.

Water is a by product of combustion and until up to temperature you'll notice a touch of white smoke and condensation, that's why the drain holes are there ;)

If you've got a replacement on way then it's obvious, as above whip off ruined one and put new one on when you have time.

Hate the idea of bikes sitting unused for that length of time. Seals and oil etc all still deteriorate whether used or not, but that said, that's a bargain and a great find :)

Hard to see but doubt it would weld as the whole lot looks in a state and metal has thinned a lot. Best option is remove and replace, cheapest is just remove and throw, if you trust it then bodge as above.

Fill it with body filler and spray the lot Matt black. Wouldn't take long for a quick bodge job and they'll never give it a second look.

Mine does 45 mpg pretty much whatever riding I do.

It's not great I must admit, but then I didn't buy it for economy ;)

The snatchy throttle isnt half as bad as its been made out if you can ride you will quickly learn to ride around /with it .

Agree, I wasn't aware of a snatchy throttle until people mentioned it on here. I would call it responsive.

If you're used to a bike that needs a hamfisted throttle it probably does appear snatchy, just what you're used to I guess ;)

A dealer screws you either way and FSHs and extras mean little to them in terms of pert-ex value. They do however make it easier for them to sell them so you can barter more, but I wouldn't worry too much. Decide on if you want a change first, and if so give it a good wash and take it to see what they'll offer.

But I wouldn't call it a tourer and ideally I think it is good for day trips.....like 200 mile blasts with a big grin but after that you're starting to get painful.

I disagree, I rode mine to Belgium in August for a weekends touring / camping and it was great.

It depends what you're used to.

Come from a GS1200 and you'll find it cramped and painful, but come from an R1 and it'll be like an armchair with similar performance.

I agree you wouldn't get one if you're primarily going to use the bike for round the world tours, but for usual riding and the odd long distance trip they are fine.

I came from a Tiger 800 which was a great tourer, and genuinely find this no more uncomfortable (it suits my riding better in fact), but with the addition of blistering performance by comparison.

Best gig was Donington M.O.R '91 tho.AC/DC headlining with Metallica,Motley Crue + others supporting.

Yeah I was there for that too, cracking day that was. Wish I still had the t-shirt, it was the anniversary one as I recall.

Best plastic welding I've seen is Delboys Garage on YouTube.

He uses paper clips as said above, but uses cable tie is the 'solder' to fill and glue the gap.

Works a treat and remains flexible which a lot of other fixes like superglue/bicarbonate doesn't.

I like it.

As for another Tiger, BM etc, don't forget Yamaha was an early contender for the whole dual sport thing years ago with the original TDM850, so I think it's more in keeping with their own line up since the TDM is now defunct.

There are the obvious similarities in styling of course, but that's to be expected to draw people from the opposition.
