Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: shorty link pipe fitted

Ah fuck the alleged loss of mid range, stubby cans rule!
Do I take it the shorter link pipe still allows the stubby can to miss the swing arm? If thats the case, how much are they Luke?

Just thought I'd mention this as I know all you Fazer riders are a hardy bunch, Squires are running a toy run on the 18th of November.
It starts at Squires Cafe Bar near Sherburn in Elmet at 9:15am and travels to The Sun inn, landing there at around 11:00am and then moving on to Ripon, landing there at around 12;30. The route is 125 and learner friendly so newbies can join in.
All you need to join in the run is either a small donation or bring a toy.
Its all in a good cause, helping under privileged children, hopefully enjoy xmas a bit more than they might.
I did this run earlier this year, when it was an Easter egg run and had a cracking day out.
Would be good to see some more Fazers out on this run :)
Check out http://www.squires-cafe.co.uk/whats_on_at_squires/event_five.asp
Cheers guys

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Ignition barrel
« on: 03 October 2012, 08:03:44 pm »
Think you'll probably find it is the same barrel! Looks the same as my old eighties dt125lc and and even the 350lc of the beginning of that decade! You would have thought Yamaha might have changed it by now, 'specially as they were crap even back then!

Bit more info: Its the fox eye version and according to him, the versions in the last ten months of production  were fitted with different ignition barrel. Visually looks the same, but has slightly different wiring and connectors. Any suggestions?

Just a quicky folks, my mates got a fazer 600 on an '03(I think ) plate, his ignition barrel has gone fubar, anyone know what barrels will fit?  Fazer 1000? Tdm? I had assumed it would be a standard issue multi use barrel that fits loads

Think I must have a special small tank on mine, as if I get 150 miles to a tankful, I'm hugely impressed. Can't say I've actually seen those sort of figures. Think I'll have a look at this Fuelly thing and see what it comes up with :)

Don't ride for so long with out a break?  Stand up on the pegs all the time?   :lol  On a more serious note, cheaper option: buy a pair of cycling shorts, the ones with padding around the bum, might sound like a joke, but I've used them on long monotonous runs and they do work. Also used them on longer runs on my old super moto and that had wooden plank as a seat! Worth a try before shelling out on a new seat.  Plus they keep yer meat and two veg warmer when wearing vented leathers on cold days :)

If your getting flashed by cars and lighting up road signs, then adjusting your beam down slightly shouldn't fail the mot test. Find a wall that you can mark up where your beam is currently, then adjust the beam down a little.  Then find a friendly mot tester, who if necessary, will let you adjust the headlights there and then. That'll do it.
On the shock side of things....r6 shock mod is very good, but then I've already said this. At least you've got choices:-)

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Gen 1 Handlebars / risers
« on: 11 September 2012, 09:45:26 pm »
I had Renthal 758s on my bike when I bought it, have now fitted 658s and its made a big difference. As Ghostbiker said, they give you a more attacking stance and are a little narrower. I also find them easier to control the bike at walking pace. Try changing the bars before going down the changing the risers path.
As for shit brakes, mine had those when I bought it as well, it now has excellent brakes or it did til I put some SBS pads on it!
My suggestion for improving your brakes is, a good clean up of the calipers, stainless braided hoses, decent EBC hh pads and a really good bleeding. Brakes are now spot on.

Mines normally rock solid with my hands off, tho discovered the other weekend when I had packed soft panniers and camping gear strapped to the back, that I got massive wobbles on the front end!!!  It does get wibbly when accelerating hard tho.

Interesting you mention the exup valve, I know every thing is in place down below as I put it together, but still not sure about the cables being set correctly as I didn't take them off when dismantling the bike for the gearbox, it was a combined effort with my mechanic mate. I'm not 100% sure they were put on correctly and it also makes me wander if they could somehow of re-adjusted themselves as it seemed ok to start off with. Think I need to A: get a second opinion on the "pinking" noise, and B: find someone more knowledgeable on all things exup, as I don't think my mate has a clue. Was set up originally, after the rebuild, using an R1 workshop manual. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the reply Falcon, really am stumped on this, I've been thinking about it some more and when I think about it, the bike was running ok for a while after the rebuild and after I got the exup supposedly set up correctly, it seemed to be fine. Now its seems to be slightly down on low range grunt and this 'pinking' has arrived. So it literally has happened over the last week!
Could it down to something as simple as dodgy fuel?
Will have good check over it this weekend and make sure all correctly fastened, its possible something has worked it self loose over the last couple of hundred miles.

« on: 06 September 2012, 04:07:28 pm »
More problems with the old girl, after getting the new gearbox fitted and then re-fitting the engine and then getting the exup valve to work and then setting the exup valve correctly, I thought, yeah, it should be lovely now....but no! The bike is now running incredibly lean, to the point of it "pinking" when under load, plus it doesn't seem to have much grunt low down either!
Is there anything I should be looking for? Is it worth checking on the TPS setting? ANy other suggestions?
The carbs haven't been touched during the strip down and rebuild, but could do with balancing. There is no Ivans fitted, which would probably cure a lot of issues, but I can't afford that just now!
Help!

Or just to be different, try some 658s for a more forward and sportier position

R6 shock kit from Devilsyam bolts straight in! I had mine jacked up slightly with shorter(?) dog bones, now my h/light beam is too low! Much cheaper option than Ohlins etc and very effective, cost to me including postage was £225, if your local to Devilsyam it'll be cheaper to pick it up. Or if you can find the correct r6 shock, I think Luke will do a fitting kit, tho to be honest his shocks are brand new and very good value. Quite possibly after you buy the hyper pro spring and then get the shock refurbed etc it'll be a close run thing in price. The bonus of the r6 shock is more adjustment (I think). Hope this helps :)

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: More possible Exup woes
« on: 23 August 2012, 12:00:33 am »
So I had a go at setting the Exup correctly today, as there was no obstructions around the airbox and, hey presto, instant healthy bike again! Total transformation, the exhaust is quieter, it'll rev well above 8000rpm, it feels gruntier and it doesn't pop and bang as much on the over run!
Can the Exup being badly adjusted really make such a difference?
