Check gear linkage rose joints are free to start with. Jumping out of gear is not good...especially second. Yamaha have struggled with a weak second gear for years,xs1100 were known for it. Sounds like worn dogs/selector drum to me.

Mileage?  Used hard?

It's true that early R1 and some Fazer gearboxes suffered wear in the engagement dogs on the 2nd/6th gear pairing.  Usually jumps out of gear on hard acceleration, though.

Yamaha came up with improved gears later on but that's not much help to you right now, sorry. :)

My bike always slipped out of second. It got worse and worse until at 50k it lunched the gearbox when it slipped out. And I mean lunched it. Stripped the teeth clean off 2nd.  Just depends how bad it is. I used to have it jump 3 out of 10 changes from 2nd to 3rd towards the end. If your's is just doing it occasionally, you've probably got another 20k before worrying too much though!

Thanks to the joys of YouTube, there's a very good look at the problem here, even though he's talking about the R1, the gearboxes share the majority of parts ..

2000 Yamaha YZF-R1 Engine Rebuild - Part 12 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9pCBvaBN_U#ws)

There are upgraded parts for 2nd and 6th gears with different serial numbers. They're the same serial numbers as for the R1

The problem is, although they're not expensive parts, the stripdown costs are.....

By the way, anyone got a spare gearbox?

Had this at 13,000 miles - had to get most of the gears changed as they had worn out according to the stealer - Haven't had any problems in a further 23,000 miles riding, but then I have cut out
the wheelies :-o
