For Sale & Wanted / Wanted: FZS1000 rear caliper
« on: 08 June 2012, 04:48:42 pm »
Probably a long shot, but I'm looking for a bluespot rear caliper for my FZS600 MK1.

Happy to pay a good price for a decent quality piece. Anyone got anything to offer, or contacts for anyone that might?

FZS600 Fazer / Re: How to diagnose sticky brake piston?
« on: 07 June 2012, 08:31:19 pm »
Ok, had a proper look today. Inner piston was slightly corroded and was sticking. Pushed both out a bit and cleaned them up as suggested. Made an immediate difference, but I think I should carry on and do the job properly, or replace the caliper.

I wasn't sure about the pad retaining pins though. I don't know what they should look like, but they both appeared worn where the pads would sit. I assume that this isn't right and the pins should be a consistent diameter down the full length, and would therefore need replacing. Problem is I've not been able to find anywhere online that sells them to compare against. Can anyone tell me if this is normal, or if I should get new ones, and where I can get them?

FZS600 Fazer / How to diagnose sticky brake piston?
« on: 06 June 2012, 09:04:08 am »
I'm new to bike mechanics, so am looking for some advice.

I've not ridden for a number of years and have had my Fazer for a couple of weeks now. To me it appears that the back brake is weak, and from reading on here out might have a sticky piston.

I want to know how I can confirm this, without having to strip it down too much. I need the bike to be useable, so can't take things apart unless I have the parts to put back again. If it's knackered and I need seals, pistons etc. I'd rather keep the money and put it toward a blue spot caliper.

Also, what's the average price for the caliper these days?

Guess I need to take the tank off and have a proper look.

ok....this might sound a bit silly.....have you disconnected the two breather tubes on the bottom of the tank ?

Not silly no, as this all new to me.  When I last had bikes 15 years ago, I didn't do any maintenance myself, whereas now I do everything.

There were no tubes (apart from the feed line), which I did think was a bit odd.  Just two pipe ends on the bottom of the tank.  I guess I need to work out what needs finding/replacing.

Realistically, you shouldn't especially if it has fuel in it. If the fuel gets to the top lid, you run the risk of it flowing out the overfill / breather hole  :eek (right??)

That will explain the small leakage I had when I tipped the tank back again.  :\

Lesson learnt. I'll take it off properly from now on.

FZS600 Fazer / Lifting fuel tank

2000 MK1, when lifting the tank, i.e. only removing the front bolt, should the tank be prevented from tilting back too far?

I ask, as I was taking a look around on my recent purchase, there was some resistance as I got it lifted about 90 degrees, then something gave, and it swung back and laid on the seat.  I then found I couldn't swing it back without removing the long pivot bolt.

There seemed to be a lot of movement from the mounting rubber, which may or may not have contributed, but I wanted to find out how it is *supposed* to work before I  A, worry or B, try to do something about it.

Thanks,

Jamie

FZS600 Fazer / Hugger options
« on: 31 May 2012, 09:43:04 am »
Hi all,

I'm looking for a hugger for my 2000, but the budget won't stretch to a new one. Does anyone know if there are any OEM huggers from other bikes, i.e. YSF600R that will fit the MK1 FSZ600?  I don't mind a bit of modification.

Failing that, anyone know where I can get a cheap one that will fit?

Cheers,

Jamie

I've got a seized MC bolt on my new Fazer.  Thanks for the info here, it doesn't look like too bad a job, and I know what screws to get.

Thanks.   :)

Introduction / Morning all, a born again biker here
« on: 28 May 2012, 09:17:23 am »
Hi all.

I'm returning to biking after a lay-off of more than 15 years.  In my youth I progressed through a DT50 at 16, then up to a KDX125 at 17, a KLX250 at 18 (which was soon traded in, horrible bike  :\ ) followed by a RF600 for a couple of years, before I gave it up for cars.

The cost of petrol and a commute that's about to get longer (actually, it doesn't help that my daily driver is a 12mpg, 6.6 litre Chevy Camaro, but enough of that, this is a bike forum), I've gone back to the econonmy thrill of 2 wheel transport.

I picked up a 2000 FZS600 in Silver on Friday night, with just 47K on the clock.  An absolute bargin, considering it's had a FSH, and the April service/MOT was more then 2/3 of the purchase price, and it included a nice new set of Motad downpipes.  It's also got heated grips (not working, but I hope to be able to sort that), and a Scottoiler with the large capacity reservoir too.

It a bit scary with my first riding in 15 years being on a big bike in London rush hour traffic, and I spent the whole time just following the queues, with hand permanently on the levers.   Once I got out of London and the traffic eased a bit I was able to relax a bit more and start to enjoy it.  I've covered about 70 miles now, and am much more relaxed - things are starting to come back to me.

I've not done any maintenance on bikes, but with plenty of experience on the cars, there is nothing that will scare me on this.  I'm sure I'll have lots of questions as I start delving into it.  In fact there's one on the way now...

Cheers,

Jamie
