Hi Marco and welcome.

Do the easy stuff first - check the front sprocket for wear and the chain for tightness. If it stops when the bike isn't moving, it's probably either one of those.

Me too. I got the bar mounted twin USB charger Ultimate Addons do. Good. Works. Love the way it lights up when you take the cap off and yet switches off the juice to the phone (or your camera) when the engine is off.

It's not hard to fit, just a bit scary the first time you do it, and time consuming. Getting carbs on and off is a real pain the first time you do it.

Or wait til Mike makes his next trip over.

Kawasaki are selling a lot of 1000SXs so there is a market. Suzuki are trying with their new 1000F, BMW have the 1000XR (amazing reviews, but it's way too bulky for commuting for me), maybe Yamaha will address that market too. I reckon there's a MT-11 out there somewhere in testing. Although that might be wishful thinking.... cross plane 4 crank, comfy, active suspension, 55 to the gallon, 160bhp, loads of torque.... oh yeah....

Yes, cracking post. More! Anyone else tried a Tracer?

As for budget suspension - you do wonder why the Japanese keep doing this. The Suzuki GSX1000F has been criticised for budget suspension as has the MT07 and 09. Seriously, it costs 400 quid for a really decent aftermarket job, so you'd expect a manufacturer to be able to get a similar quality shock for a say a hundred less, knock off a couple of hundred saving on not using the useless original which means getting a decent quality shock should only cost a hundred or so extra? Why don't they? Baffles me. Answers on a postcard.

Even if it added 400 quid to the cost of the bike, it'd be worth it. But then again, how many Japanese bikes use top quality correctly sprung shocks? Not many, is the answer. Even some of the top sports bike are sold with badly set up suspension which is why MCT, etc are in business.

Hey! The man himself. The warmest of welcomes to the forum, Ichiban. I hope you pick up some tips from us Limeys. Apprentices in the this country have for years been told to go to the stores for 'long stand' or bucket of steam so we're well versed in the art of dead pan humour.

Thanks for the info! I'm still kind of baffled as to why so many bikes with these are dazzleships though.

Good reports about these guys on the ZZR1400 forum. A mile from Mallory Park if that's any use.

« on: 08 August 2015, 01:20:48 am »
i'm very drunk, so I might regret this post but.... I'm a fan of popcorn and a good argument. Understanding comes out of many arguments.

PaulSmith, please rebut every single one of the points that BikerDude has made. Just because you have measured 28.5mm from base does not answer the point about lateral free play, for instance. And what about overheating and longevity? I see guys with HIDs from time to time and many of them are clearly badly set up, uselessly and pointlessly dazzling other road users. In fact, I'd say the majority of bulb replacements are badly set up. The all in one separate spotlight kits complete seem ok though, probably because they are designed as a unit to work with HIDs. I seriously doubt there's much design gone into a 20 quid HID replacement that can be retrofitted to any number of bikes.

I am considering a kit and would like to know more, and I'd really like to know why you have to start slagging people with 'your behaviour is clearly not normal' type comments. That's just a fucking stupid slag off rather than a point or counterpoint and it undermines any argument you make. Someone disagrees with you and you call their sanity into question.. really.. ? Answer the questions.....
  • did you measure to the center of the arc, from the base of the H4 plate? as most will be out a few mm, but can the same be said for Hi beam?
  • is there lateral free-play in yours (as in vertical movement where gravity will be pulling the bulb mech downward, mean it out of alignment). And because the bulb is flapping about while the bike is moving you get additional dazzling of other road users.
  • all telescopic hid kits that I have seen have two shrouds/baffles, an inner and outer. The position of the inner is almost always inaccurate and either allows some spillage on dip and/or obscured on Hi.
  • The hole in the outer baffle (again on all kits I have seen) dosent allow enough light out so you don't get all the light being exposed to the reflector.
  • And the solenoid mech used in all kits I have seen is very cheap and chearfull to the point that when Hi beam has been on for a while the whole back of the bulb overheats, because its essentially just shy of being a short circuit.
  • A lot of the telescopic kits are so poorly manufactured that the bulbs dosent stayed screwed into the baseplate assy and/or arent sealed so water/condensation can ingress into the headlight unit.
  • And keeping on the subject of cheap and cheerful, most of these kits don't last anywhere near as long as stated, either the bloody bulbs or the ballasts go.

Is it a 2001 model? The second gear on R1s and Fazers 2000/2001 were superseded by an uprated part. Poor undercutting on the dog, apparently. See "Replaced part number" here

I ran my Fazer on the same set of normal plugs for 50k miles. Made no difference putting iridiums in that I could tell. Might do on poor fuel, might do in very high performance machines, but I don't think the Fazer needs them.

« on: 27 July 2015, 11:31:48 pm »
Damage the pup? I doubt it. One of the funniest things I have seen in a long time was a couple of weeks ago. The puppy was doing his business and had a foot long turd hanging from his arse (he eats long grass) when he was distracted by a cow in the next field. Naturally he turned to bark at the cow only to be smacked on the side by his own turd! So he turned again to bark at the turd only for it to whack him on the other side. It took three or fours whacks for him to realise that he had to stop, finish his business, and then he could bark at the cow. I nearly threw up I was laughing so hard.

I'm killing myself laughing! Brilliant.

To my shame, it took me a couple before I realised it's a total piss take. It was the parts super finisher made from cat litter and a colander that finally got me.

Bad Ass!

Yup, those screwdrivers are a pointless waste of metal aren't they? Gotta love that bad ass Ichiban Moto guy though. He has me in hysterics sometimes.

AJ? That's my initials, oddly enough.

They are like that but if you chock the rear wheel up just enough to take the slack out then do up the linkage nuts it minimises it. Mine has very little now.

It must have been lodged in the tunnel for the coolant outlet hoses and when I took the cover off it dropped onto the cam. I might start keeping all my tools there to free up space under the seat.....

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Fz1 front brake discs ...... doh...

You do wonder. 60 quid for the FZ1 vs 173 quid for the FZS1000 vs 155 for the R1.

And the prices of the calipers - FZS600/XJR1300/FZS1000/R1 - vary wildly too. I thought all blue spot Yamaha calipers were the same spec but they are different parts numbers. Only the R1 seems to share the same part number with the FZS1000. 440 quid. Gulp.

Oh dear. For the final part of my engine repaint, I took the cam cover off last weekend and found this

Allen bit found at last
Allen bit found at last

Asides from all the corrosion and road grit that accumulates after almost a decade of use, I found that allen bit that I was looking for 3 years ago nestling on a cam. That's the first time the lid's been off in 90k miles so it must have been in there all that time. Amazingly all the valves clearances were within spec. Just 3 were on the limit, but even so, still within spec. What an engine.

145
Anyone tried a rattle gun? (just kidding)

I haven't done anything with my adjusters except adjust them and after 13 winters and 140k miles, they're not seized. Just lucky I suppose. I wish I could offer some help, but the only thing I can think of is strip the fork down, seal the hole at the bottom of fork and pour diesel down the leg and leave for a week. You can see the adjuster at the bottom of the fork leg if you shine a light down there, so maybe you could attack it from the other side.

Either that or stick it in the oven for an hour and then bung it in the deep freeze.

I might be getting a bit Ichiban Moto there....

(in case you're not aware that the Americans have recently discovered a rich vein of irony)

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: No neutral light, is it just a bulb
« on: 14 July 2015, 08:37:55 pm »
That's a good point about the connector. My switch failed over several months I suspect because the neutral light flickered a lot before the switch finally went. Could be just a connection.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: No neutral light, is it just a bulb
« on: 11 July 2015, 11:18:49 pm »
It happened to me, but it wasn't the bulb, it was the switch at the back of the engine. They're not too expensive since the Euro is so cheap at the moment.

There's a simpler way to tell. I found out after fitting my Ivan's kit that if you take it to just 3500 rpm in second and whack the throttle open, the front will start lifting at 4000....

Stock, it never used to do that!

Nice work, Galahad. Did you have much trouble taking the cam box cover off? Apart from the looks screws that is. The coolant spigot took a hell of a lot of persuasion last time and it's been some time since I looked it.

Thanks for the encouragement, guys. I laid down another two coats this afternoon and finished rebuilding the forks. With a bit of luck it will be back on the road next weekend.
