Newbie Fazer 1000 owner
« on: 22 August 2013, 12:31:48 pm »
Hi All,
Just bought my first Fazer 1000 last weekend, 2003 model. I've only ever had Honda's before and this is my first Yamaha and after reading various reviews I thought I'd get myself one.... Best decision i've made!
I've only done around 200 miles on my bike and have noticed a slight coolant leak coming from the middle of the block underneath what looks to be the starter motor. Only leaks after been running and only leaves a small babybell sized puddle down near the side stand (where its lent over). Just wondered if any body else has experienced this?
Cheers,
Dave

Hi David, welcome to the funny farm!!! ;)

Nice bike choice,

water on the floor,,umm, well have you washed it at all, sometimes water can stand ontop of the engine and only run off when leant over on sidestand, or if there is a leak then its doing the same, maintain a watch on the coolant level, if it drops then invesigate,

others may tell you if there is a common reason, good luck

I noticed you said "middle of the block, underneath what looks to be the starter motor" and am wondering whether you mean the oil cooler. If so you may have a leak in the aluminium pipe the hose goes onto as it is relatively thin and exposed to all the crud. If it is next to the oil filter at the front of the engine then my money is on it being the oil cooler. On the other hand you may well know the difference between the starter motor and oil cooler, in which case I will shut up.

Hi Guys,
This is a photo of where my leak appears to be coming from, its fairly dried up (as bike has been sitting all week) but you can make out the green coolant stains. Photo taken from the side stand side and is of the middle of the engine. I think the cyclindrical bit is the starter motor?

Hi Dazza,
Not sure if it's the starter motor (I'm more used to playing with cars) but the bit i'm talking about is the bit in the top of my first photo... its coke can diamentions. Leak is definatly from around there, I've lifted the tank and had a good search but no luck. Booked in on Tues with a bike mechanic I know so hopefully get it sorted.  :)

I'll get my coat, you're right that is the starter motor.
