Assuming steering dampers are intended for higher speeds would they also, as a side benefit, improve (FZS1000) rider comfort & handling over rutted and broken up road surfaces?.......which are now common place on our roads

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Fitting some hand guards
« on: 13 March 2017, 08:39:10 pm »
....just to add to this for original question-

FZS600s don’t lend themselves to hand guards but it can be done...….a TDM or Versys for example or other bikes like them are easier as the front fairing is narrower.
So that your Fazer hand guards don’t foul the fairing when turning the bars you’ll want to buy some slim...ish hand guards as your starting point. Once you’ve fitted them and fine tuned the position - dremmel or cut any remaining part of the hand guard which makes contact with the fairing when turning the bars.

What you get in return is gloves that will dry out more quickly after riding through heavy rain. From my experience the benefits of stopping wind chill on your fingers aren't as good as one would expect but it certainly helps…..and depends how cold it is etc.

The other issue is that they change big time the styling/appearance of the Fazer but if hand guards are what you want then you have to get used to that.

What do you class as "loose" ground anyway?
gravel roads/gravel tracks

The Heidenaus are not too bad..........
Yes that brand does quite a few different choices. 120 width tyre size for the front over what should be 110 for this bike opens up a big choice of tyres. But my thinking was that as these bikes are designed for sport touring tyres then sticking to 110 width on the front is preferable seeing as we're deviating from Yamaha's intended tyre type.

Not sure if its anyone's FZ1 on the forum but this sprung to mind.. TKC80 tyres
Of course I realised a lot of fun could result from this thread

Hi,
Question here for 98-03 Fazer owners who live in places where road surfaces are not good requiring a deeper tyre tread which is better on loose ground than sport touring tyres are?

Obviously a single cylinder bike would be the bike of choice but have any Fazer owners maybe in countries around the world fitted tyres which can grip well on loose ground at slow ish speeds?
Sure - such tyres wouldn't have the speed rating that Yamaha intends for Fazer 600s so higher speed riding would be out.
Anyone from around the globe deviated from the normal tyre choice?

Any reason you don't just go for the commonly available rack and side rail fitting kit?

Yeah I could easily do that. Not that fitting panniers bigger (Givi TRK33s anyone?) than Givi's specified E21s has ever overstressed anyones Givi side rail fittings (obviously Givi simply cover themselves with their stated E21 pannier weight limit for the PL349 side rails).

According to Givi the Wingrack together with its FZS600 fitting kit weighs a massive 7.5Kg (don't know the figure for the Thou) so it lends itself better to an 02-05 Thou than to the 600. But it does turn the 600 into a load lugger instead of the fun bike that it is.
But sure - around 7.5Kg of racking even on the Thou is a lot of weight at the far back of the bike to be carrying every time the bikes ridden.
Yup, looks like the PL349 side rails are the way to go on this Joe  :)

Do any of you '02-'05 Thou boys have a Givi Wingrack fitted to your bike?
I haven't seen one myself fitted to a Thou but I've been told they do exist.

Wingracks, being the same for all bikes, I'm interested in whether Givi did actually produce an FZS1000 '02-'05 specific fitting kit? (that is - arms connecting pillion hangers to Wingrack as well as integral Grab rail being connected to the Wingrack........they are the normal parts making up bike-model-specific Givi Wingrack fitting kits).

Cheers in advance

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Side mounted Dual Air horn?
« on: 20 July 2016, 11:13:33 pm »
fazersharp, darrsi - replies much appreciated.
I've got the Ring version fitted more or less as darrsi mentioned.
But as I've got an original (and boxed) Stebel version which is their all-enclosed waterproof version I wanted to fit that one instead but on the exterior of the bike much like can be seen on some naked bikes. Sure I can always look on some mods forums of naked bikes but thought I'd start my search here? You never know - a '98-03 Fazer owner somewhere might just have a Stebel dual Air horn fitted to the exterior (engine region) of their bike?

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Side mounted Dual Air horn?
« on: 19 July 2016, 11:11:55 pm »
yeah but its too much of a squeeze under the infill panel what with the forks closing in on it as they turn....and moving the horn backwards puts it very close to top of radiator. Also be good to move it lower to centralise mass etc....and might be even a tad louder being more exposed  ;)
Photos would be good if anyones got any? even of other bikes would be a start?

FZS600 Fazer / Side mounted Dual Air horn?
« on: 19 July 2016, 10:33:20 pm »
Has anyone fitted a 'Ring' Dual Air horn or 'Stebel' Dual Air horn (and theres a waterproof version) onto the part of the FZS600 just forward of the engine on the side? that would be somewhere below the front indicator? I've seen naked bikes with horns fitted in that area of the bike so wondered if any '98-'03 fazer owners on this site have also done that?
...cheers in advance,....

FZS600 Fazer / ECU rain-water protection? '98-'03 FZS600
« on: 13 July 2016, 08:23:35 pm »
I'm getting rain water collecting where the ECU is (under the tool kit) left hand side, ie near where the wires lead out of the ECU box. Probably wouldn't actually short circuit anything as all the electrics are insulated etc. But seeing water near the ECU box/wires doesn't bide too well with me.

If anyone could post a photo of that section of their '98-'03 FZS600 showing the (correct) positioning of all the rubber flaps then I could make sure that section of my bike is how it should be?
As I'm assuming all that rubber is out of position on my bike hence its letting rain water in somehow.......Any takers?

FZS600 Fazer / Re: cig charger socket beside ignition switch
« on: 19 January 2016, 03:47:25 pm »
ah.....Limax, Freeware,...just saw this - thanks for the photos.

I need to move my charger socket away from my LHS infill panel to give the twin air horn more space (& btw if you ever only do one mod then let it be a twin air horn)

I've been told that bike electrics should reside on LHS of the bike so they are protected from rain when bikes on the side stand. But has anyone had success with fitting a charger socket in the RHS fairing infill panel being as I said - exposed to rain when the bikes on the side stand?

FZS600 Fazer / cig charger socket beside ignition switch
« on: 29 December 2015, 08:38:51 pm »
Is anyone able to post photos of their FZS600 which has a cig lighter charger socket next to the ignition switch?
I believe there is actually the space to fit one there, but I could be wrong.

FZS600 Fazer / Side stand engine cut out switch in more detail?
« on: 27 October 2015, 12:56:55 pm »
Tricky one to explain this, but here goes:
Should the side stand engine cut out switch - 1)stop the engine when bike's in gear (with clutch pulled in) when the side stand's down? OR   2)should the engine cut itself out at the moment when the clutch is let out - as you ride off (when the side stand's down)?

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Ideas to stop chain's rear side plates drying out?
« on: 18 August 2015, 09:16:30 pm »
Thanks...all good replies.
But does anyone know which spray lube will blend in the best with Scottoil that already coats my chain? Sure this will be against the rules of the 'Scottoil bible' but auto oilers are not the 'fit and forget' systems that they are marketed as.

FZS600 Fazer / Ideas to stop chain's rear side plates drying out?
« on: 15 August 2015, 10:42:48 pm »
Does anyone know what's the best compromise spray-on chain lube to spray on the rear plates of the chain to stop the chain drying out in cold dry weather?
I've got an auto chain oiler fitted but chain oilers can't lube the chain when the bike's not being ridden. Brushing over the chain with Scottoil is the best option but with a bike parked out doors is not a quick and easy task in bad weather....of course it can be done but a quick spray done more frequently is what I want to be doing.
As said I'm looking for a compromise answer which obviously won't be what the gods-up-on-high at Scottoiler in Glasgow are going to agree with?

General / Centre stands....for better or worse.
« on: 11 August 2015, 01:28:56 pm »
This has been out for a while now but at what point did he loose balance of his bike? The grounds pretty level so no worries there. Maybe not enough leverage pushing his foot down on the stand/with extra help with his hand?
Centre stands are a good thing for all year round bikers right? Or perhaps not in this case? How could it be so easy for that to go so wrong?  :\

Ive got a set of pannier racks on my 2002 if that helps???
.....cheers RMT1983.....Though that directs me to Givi customer services to try to find out if the 2002 bike is incorporated in their described 2003-on PL349 pannier frames. But Givi Customer services are a waste of time.
Have a look on www.cmsnl.com and look up the part numbers for the hangers. Any difference it will have a different part number.
.....ste131...Yup cheers. 'cms' has the Netherlands at the foot of their web page....but I'm on about UK bikes...I'm sure it makes no difference but at any rate I cross checked it on AJ Sutton schemic diagrams which seemed to confirm pillion hangers were the same size from 2001-2005.

"Pre-2003 the lights were switchable.  After that they went to permanently on"(Falcon269).....Yup cheers...also I found out that the wiring inside the switch remains in place whilst the pre-2003 switch is simply blanked off on post-2003 bikes.

"There's no reason why the 04-05 model should have lost one kilo in weight. If anything, it should have gained weight because the final year of production included a small cataclysmic diverter in the exhaust"(Falcon269).....Cheers again. And indeed what you said must be right so as I said it must have been a Wikipedia 'variable' with their information source.
Apparently the date of birth of the founder of Wikipedia is incorrectly listed on Wikipedia's own page about him....so I heard.

Thanks ste131 that's good.

For the '03 model year change were the pillion peg sizes changed? As Givi only sell (PL349) pannier frames which are listed for post '03 Thou's. So am I right to assume those pannier frames won't fit the (very first) Dec 2000 model? Can anyone put me straight on that?

Also Wikipedia (for what its worth) states that the Thou in its 2004-2005 final year model run lost 1Kg in weight down from 231Kg to 230Kg wet weight so what was changed on the bike so that 1Kg could be lost?

And I never heard before that 2003-on bikes had the headlights permanently switched on......can anyone else verify that?

23
As on the old Fazer site which listed all the year on year detail spec changes for the 1998-2003 FZS600 - does anyone know if there is (and where) there's a similar list for the FZS1000 (02-05, Gen1) either on the old Fazer site or this current site?
Cheers
