Well done mate. Glad you finally got it sorted and WITHOUT having to hand over a wad to a dealer.
If it makes you feel any better, I suspect many of us have done something similar. I have probably only a slightly better talent with the tools than you.
Years ago, I checked the valve clearances on a Yamaha Dragstar 650. Had to have the carbs off to do so. Didn’t realise that I’d put a spring back on the wrong way around. When it was all back together, the throttle wouldn’t shut properly when you released it.
Ordered and fitted another throttle cable, thinking I’d damaged or kinked the original. No joy! So I had to have the carbs off again. Fortunately I then realised what I’d done and it was an easy fix. Spent hours messing about with it though.
Well done. Hope you can now have many more happy miles on the FZ. 👍

Just wondering if this belonged to anyone on here?
Looks to be a very clean nice example but imho, a bit strong on pricing?

You’ll probably get a better response for this by posting in the Fazer 1000 section. Loads of people on there with technical ability.

Hope this link with some photos from Pats pages will help.

Good luck

Apologies. From seeing your other thread and the responses, it seems I may have given you a wrong steer.
Hope you get them sorted soon.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully we’ve got a while longer yet of reasonable weather, before some of us start to put our bikes away for winter.
I personally won’t ride now when the ice descends, but will still venture out on those cold crisp dry sunny days, with heated under garments though. 🤗
Hope your Fazer isn’t locked away for too long.

Thanks Greg for your reply. Good advice. I had one a few years back and sold it on after lack of use(for peanuts!) 🙄
However, I’ve actually literally just received a new one in the post (UK brand equivalent) from Sportsbikeshop.
I’ll see how I get in but it’s got to be a cheaper alternative than replacing the seat.

« on: 05 August 2021, 08:25:56 pm »
It certainly makes the bike look better imho without all of that plumbing, which essentially, makes no difference here, where we don’t (yet) have emissions testing at mot time.

If the valve clearance check is done as per Pats guide, with care taken to avoid crud dropping into the engine when the rocker cover / spark plugs are removed, there shouldn’t really be a need to change the oil again at valve clearance time. But, tbh, even an oil change probably wouldn’t flush that crud out anyway, so it’s best to take care when the job gets done.

I understand about the piece of mind thing with potential long term ownership. Had my current one for nine years odd now.

You could do what I did??? Read Pats guide thoroughly and have a go at checking them yourself? I’d never done it before and have limited talent with tools.
But checking them, if you follow the guide and take your time isn’t too challenging. If they need changing, I’d personally definately leave that to the professionals.

For Sale & Wanted / WANTED: Gen1 1000 comfort (ideally taller) seat
« on: 05 August 2021, 08:00:45 pm »
Greetings all,

Had a spare taller seat that i purchased on here a while back. Unfortunately, it was a little too tall. Took it to be reupholstered but when they took the cover off, the foam etc underneath was pretty much rotten / been eaten. It wasn’t cost effective to have them rebuild it from scratch.

Soo…..

Anybody got a slightly taller than standard reworked / comfort type seat that they’d like to part with for sensible money please?

Thought I’d ask here before I go to that auction site to pick up a cheap second hand seat to be recovered.

I’ve tried a gel pad strapped on top of the standard, but don’t like the way that you roll around on it whilst riding and tbh, I didn’t find it much, if any more comfortable. It’s really a little more height that I’m after, to reduce the angle of my knees and hips as I get older.

Hi Ricky,
I’m sure that there will be far more knowledgable people than I along soon to help you out, but for my two penneth worth….

I checked the valve clearances on my 2nd Gen1 some years back, as like you, I didn’t have the funds to pay a dealer to do them. General feedback then was that the dealers mostly know that with this model, they were most likely to still be well within tolerance and would quite likely still charge for the job, but not actually check them.

When I did check them, out of piece of mind really, they were indeed all within tolerance at the time.
If you do some searching on here, you will probably find (as I did) that the general consensus here is that they don’t need doing / are unlikely to be out of tolerance at this sort of mileage.

With regards to the AIS removal,I personally wouldn’t bother, until such time as you do decide to get the valve clearances checked. At that point, you’ve got to remove it partially to check the clearances, so you might as well fit the AIS removal kit then.

Personally, if the bike is sound and running well atm, with funds being tight, I’d spent the cash on a decent home service. You could then spend the extra cash on some worthwhile improvements if needed. Hope this helps. :thumbup

I should add that my link was mainly for the Fowler’s parts webpage, rather than looking for your specific part / colour for you. 👍

Thanks very much NitramA and unfazed. 👍

It's like something loose with a tinkling sound at 30 to 40 on/off throttle. Normally if really loose it rattles like someone tapping a spanner on the exhaust at tickover when cold.”

That’s exactly what mine sounds like, rattling at tick over. Bizarrely, it didn’t do it before I had it refurbed. Did nothing to the EXUP so don’t understand what has changed. Anything that you can do about it??

I’ve serviced it regularly and had it apart again as soon as I noticed it rattling. But all the constituent parts were present and correct.

Sorry for the thread hijack.

Now that’s what I call a proper bargain. Sadly, I already have the same.
Have you tried lilhoodlum? He has a post further down looking for a rack / top box. GLWS

Less than 20k ideally

I don’t want to spoil your dream or teach you to suck eggs, but do bear in mind that the Gen1 FZS1000 were only made from 2001 - 2005. Therefore they will all be between 16 - 20yrs old. You’re not going to have a very big choice available to you if you want only those below 20k, an average annual mileage between 1000 - 1250? They are out there, but I wouldn’t have thought that they’d be plentiful?

There is a school of thought that says that a bike that has plenty of miles under its belt after fifteen years BUT, has been well maintained by a few long term owner, might be a better buy than one that has done minimal mileage over the same period / changed hands plenty of times / been serviced on mileage rather than time.

By way of an example, I’ve owned mine for about nine years now. It’s still only got about 26- 27k on it, of which I’ve probably
done 8k. But.............it normally gets an oil and filter annually, along with the exup valve getting a service. Brake fluid every two or three years etc etc The Gen1, if well maintained, is good for some big mileages.

Just my thoughts. Good luck with your search.

To be fair, it’s not a huge price for a bike in that apparently good condition. I’m sure you could negotiate it down a couple of hundred? Given the mileage and condition, I’d imagine that the suspension won’t be too tired at that mileage, so you could put that job off for a while. But you’d still need to budget for it and if you’re thinking of doing a lot of two up work with your other half, I wouldn’t wait to get that done.
What I would want to get done straight away though, would be to replace the standard brake hoses after 18yrs, with some braided ones. So budget for that. HEL do some sets for around the £100 mark iirc? Don’t forget to use the Forum discount code. Don’t ask me how I know that!  :'(

If I were to decide to sell mine, (which I have no plans to do), which has pretty much all of the common mods / updates on it, along with a set of luggage, I wouldn’t let it go for much less than that.

So, if you hold out and maybe post a wanted advert in here for a fully specc’d one, you might get one offered for similar money? It would save you a load of hassle and money if it has had all of the main upgrades done already? Plus, most forum owners will have maintained the exhaust exup valve as well.

Good luck with your search.

72

I’m guessing by your post that you may be taking a pillion and therefore need a top box AND pannier set?

If not, how about the following options..........

Ventura? With a rack pack?
Sw Motech Blaze panniers with maybe a Kriega Us 20/10/10 combo on the pillion seat? Soft luggage I know, so it might not be what you’re looking for.

Good luck with your search.
