fork help required please
« on: 28 June 2012, 07:50:53 pm »
Hello all,
I'm mid job of replacing the seals in both my forks, had the bike since november, but I've been in the gulf since Dec, so it's been put off for a while!!! it's a 54 plate fazer 1000.
Anyway, stripping down the forks and all the internals came out complete on the nearside fork ( this had been taken apart by the previous owner, who chaanged the seals before I bought it, though they are now leaking only a year later), but the other one i can't get the bottom half of the internals out of the tube, the bottom bolt that holds them in the base of the tube feels like it's just spinning. I've got 2 nuts on the end of the damper rod so i can get a socket on it and hold it still. Am I just not applying enough downward force? or do I need a specialist tool?
Any help will be much appreciated.

General opinion is that an air ratchet/gun shifts them every time. I made a tool for holding the damper rod assembly using of a metal bar with strategically places blobs of weld around the end for my other Yamaha's.

The Genuine Works Yamaha tool is to stuff a broom handle down there to lock it all up and then the nut should extract.

An air rachet is also a real help.

A cheap 12v impact wrench can be had for £20ish and makes undoing bottom bolts an absolute doddle.

Plenty on eBay and amazon :)
sigs are shit

I got a mate round and with both of us hanging off it managed to get it free :-)
It was the only snag I had, was a bit worried about doing fork seals as haven't done them before, but it was nice and straight forward really.
Just the siezed EXUP valve to sort now!!!!!
