Stick coil mod
« on: 11 January 2014, 06:55:12 pm »
Anyone managed to get stick coils working on there gen 1? I have tried 2 sets of coils the latest being 1.6 ohm each, and my bike will not run on them at all, just a big back fire.

The problem with this mod with 1.6 ohm coils is that if you parallel them you double the current flow through the power transistor in the CDI and if you put them in series you will only have 6volts per coil and less current. Standard Coil is 1.87 to 2.53 ohms primary resistance
Starndard coils operate at about 6 amps
"Parallel" could burn out the CDI (12 volts 12 amps)
"Series" will give a very weak spark. (6 volts and 3 amps)
You would need Stick coils with a primary resistance of about 3 ohms to be safe as this would give the about the same current flow.

after asking on forums those who have done this mod I have bitten the bullet and fitted the stick coils, I have wired the coils in series, my bike now starts better, doesn't have the low rev miss which I had before, and the top of the engine looks better, I have a couple of pics

yes I know the valve cover needs painting, that will have to wait till I move and get a garage built or the warmer weather.
as to the original coils one of the caps pulled off which I have now snipped the end of the lead off, but on no3 the lead had a bit of corrosion

after snipping the end off I rescrewed the cap back on and the centre pin decided to shear off!!
