Boxeye/Foxeye years?
« on: 24 June 2013, 03:06:02 am »
Hi guys,

just a quick one this, I understand the foxeye model FZS was supposed to come in on 2002, is that right? was there a fair amount of boxeyes sold after this, and was there foxeyes sold BEFORE this?

The reason I ask is, ive been keeping an eye on gumtree/ebay/biketrader at the FZS600, and have spotted a few in the last few weeks on an 02/03 plate that are still boxeyes, and one of the bikes I've been taking lessons on is a 51 plate foxeye (complete with the tuning fork logos rather than the yamaha lettering etc).

I just want to know if this is normal, or if I should be wary of some of these which may have had accident damage and had the wrong panels as replacements? maybe just the cynic in me though  :lol

Cheers,

Mick

A tricky one this, mine is a 2000 model boxeye but wasnt registered until 2001, i believe this is pretty common but im not sure of the cut offs for what should be box/foxeye.
I dont believe it is a straight forward easy swap from boxeye to foxeye & whilst i could see someone with a damaged boxeye fairing deciding to put the extra time & effort into upgrading to the foxeye fairing i dont believe anyone would downgrade and go to the extra hassle of modifying from a foxeye to boxeye fairing.

yeah, the only logic I could apply to going backwards (from a foxeye to a boxeye, I mean), is maybe they are trying to fix-up on the cheap and so buying used parts etc.

Its more the 51plate foxeye Ive seen which seems odd to me, I could understand seeing a late registered boxeye, but an early registered foxeye? seems sketchy to me, so thought I would check the years out :)

The "51" plate ranfrom 01/09/2001-28/02/02  so it is possible to have a Foxeye (2002-2003) on one of these reg plates.
Boxeyes ran from 1998 until intro of Foxeye. There are bound to be some made in 2001 unsold/registered til 2002.
If you go by VIN nos & model code  labels under seat this will identify particular model eg   5DM1,5DM4,5DM7,5DMA or 5DMC-these are all Boxeyes.
Foxeyes  launched Sept 2001 Paris show as 5RT1 & finally in July 2002 model 5RT4 to end of production in 2003.

I have seen box eye models here in the rainy land selling them as 02/03 bikes, at least now I know they could be telling the truth.
