So you helpful crewe of foccers, advice please
« on: 17 February 2013, 05:12:17 pm »
My 2007-8  FZ1s is being a pain, it seems to decide not to start when it is hot, i went to the garage today with a very low level of fuel, pulled up at the pump, the twats made me take my helmet off :(

And then it would not start, nor push and bump it, so AA came an hour later and after a few spins it fired up, no probs.

I took it home, stopped it , restarted it and went for a 30 mile spin,

came home and stopped it,, 5 minutes later it wont start, spins over very good..

Any ideas, is there a known occurance.  helpful advice welcome :lol

Hi Billy,
dont know much about the FZ1 :rolleyes  but try the side stand switch and or engine kill switch, have you had the tank off and trapped a breather? also could be the immobiliser if you have one, then start with plugs/ air filter/ fuel filter etc, just the basics i would check first.
if youre local ( heathrow) i could pop over and have a look?

Sounds like it could be the known kinked fuel pipe problem.  Google it for details.

Kinked fuel line/breather pipe I would go for if the tank has been lifted any time lately.

Had a similar problem on the ten 1 last year that turned out to be a knackered ignition. I was convinced it wouldn't start when hot only but it just turned out that way to start with as it gradually got worse.
That's not what I think your problem is, but just to show. Don't get fixed idea in your head and make symptoms fit it like I did LOL. Took me ages to find the real problem because I was sure it was something else.

Have also known the old hard plastic plug caps on bikes crack due to moisture freezing. Then they run fine cold but play up hot as it expands the crack.
But as I don't know the gen 2 I have no idea on the cap type but I doubt they use those as they seem to favour rubber now.

Yes gen2 is COP, so not HT leads to give probs.

I would also it a high chance of the problem being from a kinked fuel line

Reason being
I guess as the engine heats up the heat raising from the engine is making the fuel pipe go softer and kink even worst from the heat..

Well i tried to start it earlier and i cranked it over for ages until lt did start. But now its bloody starting as soon as i touch the start button.
I will lift the tank tomorrow to see if the fuel line looks ok, but something odd is happening.

Well i lifted the tank and could see the fuel pipe, the curve does not look like its crimped, quite sharp bend but it looks ok.

Anyway what i did notice while pressing the starter button trying to start it on the dash there is a light with a picture of an engine, in yellow.

Now when it would not start this was flashing , and now its decided to behave all of its own accord when i press the starter this yellow engine light stays lit until it fires,,then goes out,,

So the question is does anyone know what this indicates, the yellow engine light flashing while pressing the starter and it wont start? :(

I looked through the service manual, but can't see anything about the MIL flashing / cycling at start up.  On a car it would probably be linked to a sensor failure or open circuit in the emissions control systems.

Is your lambda sensor connected?  is the air intake sensor connected? you could check this by pressing select and seeing if the temperature readout changes to A and gives ambient temperature.  Maybe an injector or coil is going open circuit at start up.

It's a shame bikes don't use OBD2, as these sorts of faults would be easier to get to the bottom of.  It also possible that the battery is on the way out, and that emissions control systems are being cycled at start-up to reduce battery load (some cars used to ork like this).

Is the bike going to diagnostic mode at all?  the fault code table is on the american site.

Thanks for looking into it mate,

it now is perfect and starts straight up, i guess it was an electrical item playing up, and as you know the bastard will do it again at the wrong time,
thats why i am in the AA.

The battery is good, keep it topped up, turns over for a while when the problem occurred, hope its not a loose wire or connector, could be a pain.
