Fazer 600 Camchain knock
« on: 10 March 2021, 08:46:04 pm »
Hi all

My first post so hello from me and please be gentle..

I have a 1998 FZS600 with pretty square eyes. Generally very tidy.

It was my wife's but I confiscated it because she stopped riding it. Its got 28800 miles on the clock.

I took it out for a 40 mile ride (err.. house hunting) on Tuesday. The bike is running really well and very smoothly - except for a knock at tick over. Its too slow to be a bearing knock, I am pretty sure that its the cam chain knocking. I have to admit that I haven't heard it before but I am actually quite (almost totally) deaf.

I gather that the cam chains have a life of about 30000 miles so it could be due for a change.

I assume that I don't have to lift the bottom end to replace the chain, I am happy to grind off a rivet of two to split the chain, but are there any recommended non endless chain kits that I can buy to replace the chain? I haven't been able to find one at the usual suspects.

Before I start ripping the bike apart, is there anything else I need to check? I am lifting the carbs out in the next few days (replace the inlet rubbers that have perished) so can get at the cam chain tensioner. Do they have a habit of sticking?

Thanks

Martyn

Camchains can last forever if the bike is looked after. 30k is nothing compared to what some have had out of theirs.

The adjuster may be ready to click to the next level. Give it a bit of throttle evy now and then and keep an eye on it for now.

Thanks for that. I'll do as suggested and also take the tensioner out to make sure it is free when I get the carbs off.

The bike hasn't had a hard life before I got it. My other bike is a FJ1200 which I find more comfortable although the Fazer is a hoot to ride.

Does the knock go away when you pull the clutch in with the bike in neutral at tick over?  The clutch baskets can rattled/knock at idle in neutral and it is not a problem.

+1 to that, i was about to say the same thing.

If you look on YouTube and search for FZS600 Cam Chain Rattle you'll be able to hear other bikes with the noise.

Thanks for that suggestion, I'll try later.

YouTube can be a bit of a bugger for me because of my deafness but I'll have a look.  Cheers

Something about putting it in gear and pushing it backwards or rocking encourages the next click on tensioner --------Fellas ?
I don't do rain or threat there of. dry rider only with no shame.

Supposedly can help, can't say it's ever worked for me though!

Just been out to the bike and warned her up.

No knocking, very quiet.  A little bit of clutch basket rattle which I wouldn't have noticed unless I was listening for it.  This disappeared when I pulled the clutch in.  I'll need to take it for another blast around Cheshire, purely in the interests of fault investigation. It won't be a pleasure ride 😂

Thanks for the suggestions though.
