Steering Head Bearings
« on: 10 February 2015, 11:14:35 am »
Does anyone know when the steering head bearings should be changed.....I've done 30k on my mighty 2004 thou and not sure if there is a limit on these things.......thinking about changing them while other work is being carried out.

They only need replaced if worn. If the bike is being taken apart anyway i would repack the bearings with grease. You can visually check them for wear. Look at the rollers and check the surface for wear marks. Usually the polished surface of the bearings looks darker (The outer shell coating is wearing away) :)
If it's broken, it's not fixed.

Did you buy original bearings(ball bearings in a cage) or taper roller bearings? If you ordered tapers you will need to drift out the old races in the headstock and fit the ones supplied with the new taper bearings :)
